In 1996 I purchased my first Honda. Honda's have always been reliable for me up until now. I currently own a 2001 Honda Civic and it is MY FOURTH Honda. So far it has been the worst. Two days before Christmas I took it to have a realignment done for $49.99 but I had to have the entire steering system rebuilt. IT COST ME OVER $1100! Last Saturday I was on my way to my second job and my car would not go over 25 mph on the highway then it wouldn't move at all! I had enough momentum to pull off on the shoulder and have the vehicle towed home. I called the nearest transmission shop and they told me I needed a new transmission and should expect to pay over $2000!
Since 1996 I have been a loyal Honda owner but not anymore. Me and my fiance' are expecting in March and this car is making me poor. I guess Honda just doesn't build them like they used to.

Sounds like we are all stuck with a real LEMON. I cannot believe Honda will not fess up and take responsibility, the way their competitors would!! In an economy that is hurting, if they had any sense they would do all they could to maintain customer loyalty. At 62,000 total miles we expect that the tranny would not fail!!! They want $2,500 to repair it. One of us needs to step up and file suit, we clearly have a case!!!!

T o all my fellow honda lovers I bought this car for my daughter on the pretense of being a good car. Well after reading many of your complaints I feel I've been had by honda. I took this car to goodyear/certified tire for service since the CV axle was still under warranty for the cv boot then I had them do the timing belt and an alignment. Well to make a long story short on the way home the trans started slipping to the point where it would not go faster than 25 mph, we limped it home then had it towed back to the shop who fixed it, they said everything on their end was good they sent it to a honda dealer because they did not know what else to do. Honda dealer said they got it to set a P0730 code for a ratio error, now hearing about this site and thinking honda's going to throw me under the BUS I don't know what to do! Can somebody please help me stay sane.

I have a 2001 Honda Civic LX. It only has 86,000 miles on it. It started slipping gears and within ten minutes of driving completely broke down! It just kept revving in every gear and not moving. I had it towed to the dealership and the said I need to replace the transmission and quoted me at $2800! Who has that kind of money? It is absolutely ridiculous and I have no car now! Has anyone heard of a way to have Honda pay for this problem. These cars are supposed to last forever. I put an ad out to sell it and no one will buy it for more than $2500. What a waste of years paying a car and barely having enough for a down payment on a new one. Please let me know any info you have! Thanks! PS also my SRS light is on. Anyone have that problem?

Surprise, surprise another 2001 Civic transmission complaint. My car was slipping from 2nd-3rd gear one day and the next day it died while I was driving home. I had it towed to a local transmission place and was told that the torque converter went bad and leaked oil into the transmission. He could salvage some parts but most were fried. He even mentioned that the 01 civics have bad torque converters before he even looked at the car. Still don't know why these cars are not bring recalled when this is such a huge, widespread issue!!
I called Honda today to file a complaint. They gave me a case manager and case # but said I would have to get it towed to a Honda dealership for them to officially diagnose it even though the rep mentioned "we know it's the transmission". If anyone finds out any info re a class action count me in. I'm spreading my complaints and warnings to family, friends and co-workers. No more Hondas for me.

Hondas are known to be a very long lasting car and have the reputation of being one of the best and biggest car manufactures. Thats not true with my 2001 Honda civic lx. I had no problems what so ever with this car until the transmission blew out at 68000 miles. 68000 miles on a Honda isn't that much. Usually Honda's can last for alot more than 68000 miles. My family only had one car during this time and that was the Honda and to only discover that its transmission blew out in the middle of the road. This put me and my family in a bad position. We had no other transportation so we had to rent a car from enterprise which cost us alot of money. Also then we had to fix our transmission which cost about 1800 dollars. Thats alot of money just wasted because someone failed to put the car together correctly. Now the car is having even more problems with the speed sensor because every time I go over 20 miles a hour the D light starts blinking and the check engine light wont go off. Ive had a friend that the same problem happen to with the same car that there transmission blew out at about 74000 miles and they complained and got there money back for repairing the transmission. I don't think a person should pay for someone elses mistakes. So i think i deserve to get that money back that i payed for. I can even send you the receipt of the transmission and everything. I mean hondas should last longer than 68000 miles.

the tranny just went out on me yesterday on the highway during rush hour without a warning. here i am always talking about how reliable Honda is and then this HUGE expense comes up. I haven't gotten the damage report yet but i'm pretty confident that it was the transmission from what happened. Transmissions shouldn't fall apart at 100000 miles. so now i have to take the money from the Christmas money and whatever i get from my tax return instead of actually getting ahead now. Sorry kids, we can't have Christmas because Honda was cheap and decided to cut corners. THANKS HONDA!

I'd like to start off by saying how much I hate Honda's right now. I will probably never by another Honda ever again. I am the original owner of a 2001 Honda Civic EX and take fairly good care of it. I usually have it maintenance at a dealer as well with just a couple of exceptions. However, the transmission on this car gave up on me today. I came to a stop light and hit the gas pedal when the light turned green and guess what??? Nothing happened. The car wouldn't go. It only has 78K miles on it and is only 7 yrs old!!!! Can you believe this? It was pretty scary since I am 6 months pregnant and had a 3 yr old child with me in the back seat. I thought Honda's are supposed to last forever or at least 150K - 200K & over 10 years. That's why I bought a Honda. This is my first new car purchase. What a disappointment There have been so many problems with this car other than the transmission. Automatic doors and windows have failed on me several times each. Luckily, I purchased a $900 extended warranty to cover these minor repairs. Also, the interior is starting to fall apart. The piece of fabric on the ceiling's interior is starting to peel off and hang down (By the way, this is quite an annoyance every time I look at the rear view mirror). Too bad the extended warranty is NOT going to be able to help me with this transmission problem since it expired 6 months ago. I've had a couple of quotes for a rebuild transmission costing at least $2000. Another unexpected expense this month; thanks to American Honda Corp. I'd like to also mention that my husband also owns a 1998 Honda Accord EX with a transmission problem. We changed his transmission last year for about $2000. Also, about 3-4 years ago, I had recommended my brother-in-law to purchase a new Honda Civic EX as well. And guess what? The car didn't even hit 20K miles and needed a new transmission. Thank goodness for him that the vehicle's transmission was still under warranty. I also found out while talking to different people about this that another brother-in-law had to have his transmission repaired twice on his Odyssey. Based on my experience, Honda is not a brand known for it's reputation, reliability, or workmanship. Apparently, a lot of consumers are having issues with their Honda vehicles as I read through these complaints. You can count on my full cooperation if a class action law suit is ever initiated. I will not be purchasing a Honda again nor would never recommend anyone to purchase a Honda either. Please stay away from Honda's if you don't want to deal with a freakin' headache and an unnecessary $2000+ bill.

Well, without much warning I had tranny failure, it really upsets me that the Valvoline Oil Change center didn't let me know how bad my trans fluid looked (guess I coulda checked it myself... but still, they said they checked everything) NONE the less, started slipping between 1-2 and 2-3 gears, but thought maybe the problem was because of the oil change place since I had the problems after I went there. Then I see the posts saying pretty much if I get my tranny oil changed it wouldn't make a difference anyways, SO I didn't and ddin't have time or money to get it in the shop. Well, NOW I'm up a creek with no paddle, I've already missed one DRILL with my National Guard unit and can't afford to miss anymore, I have about 60 bucks in the bank, and don't know what to do... thought these were supposed to be dependable cars:(

well my lil gas saver just started to cost big bucks. Like many of you it started with the ever loving whine..."ZOOOOOLL"..... noise on start up. then the slip between 2-3 gear, I figure it was a cold day cause it quit after 25 miles or so, but next start up same thing. But after it warmed up no slippage a little further this time, So I decided it was tranny fluid change time again and headed to the autoparts store but returned home immediately, It slowly went into reverse, then slowly went into drive, then slipped between 1-2 then 2-3 and became very unstable slipping and downshifting on its own. Changed fluid, fluid was unremarkable, tried to run it again, it went right into gear both fwd and rev. yippee I thought,so I backed out of driveway to test it and warm it up to change fluid again, cause on fluid change you can only replace 2.9 qts at a time and if this was the problem I would dilute the fluid as much as possible. Started down the road and same thing slipping downshifting but made it home barely, got check lite I think it was pg740 gear ratio or pg730 something like that. Now I'm hoping Bryan can send me some info since he is experienced in replacing the parts needed so I will post progress as things go. hoping for a recall. #219

Bought my 2001 Honda in March 2003 with exactly 50,000. Did regular maintenance on it as everyone here does. Problems started with tranny two days ago where it would shift hard or not at all into second and third gears. Was in Pa for Thanksgiving today and got back to jersey and trans went as soon as I got off the highway (thanks god). I had my dog and my boyfriend with me, so I am already annoyed....Tow truck wait time 2 hours....wont tow to an open mechanic if they are not open which they are not because its f*cking Thanksgiving! My wife's car all of a sudden died like the rest of you. It had 81000 miles on it. The transmission just quit working. It put out the dtc p0730. I did some research and found that there is a technical service bulletin on this very thing. It says that the probable cause is excessive wear in the second clutch. It also says to just go ahead and replace the tranny. I decided to take the transmission out and rebuild it. Just to let everyone know, I have never been inside a transmission before. I went down to the local community college to there automotive department and got the rebuild procedure. It is not that hard, just very intimidating. By the way when I got to the second clutch it was horrible. All you really need if your a do it yourselfer is a metric socket set up to 32mm, a 6" gear puller, a 15 inch chisel, a feeler gauge, a pick set ( for removing seals), screw drivers, and a set of snap ring pliers, and a couple of home made tools. If you have some or most of this stuff, a garage with a jack and 2 sets of jack stands, you can do this yourself and save a ton of money. My email is mellottbryan@yahoo.com if anyone has questions. I can email pictures and the whole tear down and rebuild procedure as well as set you up with where to find tools and materials.

This is my wife's 2001 Honda Civic. she complained Friday that she thought something was wrong with the car..has no power! We did not get a chance to look at it over the weekend and on Monday morning on the way to work it died on her thankfully not too far from home. The tow truck dude said he thinks it is the transmission; I was like no way -it's a Honda; transmission issues are not in their DNA. Towed it off to the dealer where we bought it in 2001 and the only place we take it in for service. Dude calls us later and says the transmission is toast...! WHAAATTT!!! Long story short; $2800 to fix. I google 2001 Honda civic transmission and for the 1st time I come across carcomplaints.com. We call Honda Corp... it's been 4 days... no call back; we have a case number! We will fix this car and get rid of it and I will preach all I can against Honda...for the rest of my life! Lemme holla at Clark Howard real quick! This is an absolute sham; they know there is an issue and refuse to take responsibility....

To all, the tranny went out on my daughter's 2001 Civic who is way at college. We bought the 2001 Civic LX 4 yrs ago. We've had no issues until now. According to the Honda dealer it needs a new transmission. What gets me is that the only 2 yrs (per Consumers Reports) that Honda has had any "Major Transmission" troubles over the last decade is the 2001-2002 models. All the other areas were still much higher than normal in reliability. This problem should have been dealt with a long time ago.
As it is, the Honda Hybrids from that same year had the tranny warranty extended to 7 yrs/100k miles. Apparently Honda has not made that decision with the Civics.
I'll call Honda and see what they would be willing to do.
Thanks for your input.

I bought this car for my daughter's birthday last year. My hope was that it would last her a very long time. Well, the car didn't make it to her birthday this year. .The tranny is going out similar to how several of you have described your tranny failures. You would think that Honda would have called these back by now. I am going to call the Honda Corporation tomorrow and discuss my concerns. I wouldn't have bought this car had I known that it was vulnerable to a transmission problem. I am seriously thinking about not repairing this problem and getting another vehicle. Honda will lose a lot of customers if they don't address this problem with integrity.

Add me to the list of transmission failure on the 2001 Honda Civic. I was going to give this car to my daughter and had very little problems with it up until now. Sure, it had a lot of miles, but it ran great and is one of the best mpg Civics out there and besides...Hondas last a long time, don't they? Sad thing is that when I was researching which new Honda to buy for myself I came across this website and saw all the complaints about the 2001. At that point (this was July 2008) I decided I could not give this car to my daughter and was going to trade it in on a new car instead. Like another writer, I felt an impending doom and I wanted to unload it while it was still running well. But life happens and I never got around to it and sure enough 3 months later as I was cresting a hill, the car lurched and sputtered, lost drivetrain for a bit, regained power, lurched again. Thank goodness the car made it over the hill because I would have been in a precarious situation had the transmission totally failed at that point. It limped home dropping out of gear often. Took it to our transmission mechanic who took it for a test drive and it totally failed. The only solution was a rebuilt to the tune of $2896.83.
Simply put, you expect more from Honda. I have a Subaru that has 141k miles on it. My inlaws put 250k miles on their Honda. I just wasn't expecting total failure like that on car that we kept well maintained. I will NOT buy another Honda.

I was driving down I-5 when the transmission failed. No previous warning lights, nothing. I have seen the same thing listed over and over on this same vehicle (2001 Civic) and I think it is ridiculous that Honda has not handled the problem before someone is killed trying to get off a freeway with cars passing at 70 mph.
I had the car towed to the local Honda dealer and I have no idea what it will cost other than the incidents I have read about which average 3000 to 4500 dollars.

Add me to the list. My transmission has been slipping for a while - perhaps a few months, maybe longer, but I'm not enough of a gear head (like, not at all) to know. Last Thursday, transmission totally went out of the thing. I was barely able to drive it the few blocks to my mechanic (thank the Lord it didn't go out during my commute). My local mechanic mentioned similar problems with Accords and Civics in this time frame, and I found this site searching around on Google.

I had my car towed to Bankston Honda in Lewisville, TX this morning after my local mechanic confirmed it was internal transmission trouble. They gave me a quote of around $2700 to replace the transmission. I asked about the 'goodwill' discount, and the service guy said I'd need to contact Honda Customer Service and take that up with them.

Just got off the phone with Honda Customer Service. The rep said there was no such thing as a 'goodwill' discount and when I asked to talk to a supervisor, she said she could open a case file for me and have it researched. She asked me how many Hondas I've owned (2, counting this one), what I was looking for from Honda (I said 50% of the repair cost) and why I felt they should do something (I said I Honda's quality reputation never lead me to expect to have to get my whole transmission replaced at 100k miles, and if I'd wanted that I would've bought from another company).

So ... we'll see. I'll update this as this goes.

Yet another 2001 civic automatic COMPLETE FAILURE transmission. I have owned four Hondas in the last ten years, but I see that trend coming to an abrupt end. My civic has 69k on it, and its going to cost $4000.00 for a new trans, or $1500.00 for one with the same damn problems out of a junk yard. Honda, if your listening, this is a big shovel full of B.S. and the likelyhood of me buying anything from you again (dammit, even my lawnmower is a Honda) is getting slim. Pissed in MO, Knobb

Civic LX

  • Automatic transmission
  • 74,851 miles

I purchased the car brand new in May of 2001. In April of 2005, with 74,851 miles on it, the transmission failed. I had the transmission rebuilt at a cost of $1,895.00. On Oct. 14th, 2008 my transmission failed again at 121,175 miles, and I had it rebuilt again at a cost of $2,133.40. After speaking with the mechanic at the transmission shop I understood that my transmission problems were not normal wear and tear, but instead Hondas manufacturing defect. I did some research on the internet and found that I was not alone. There are numerous complaints on carcomplaints.com, consumeraffairs.com, and Hondaproblems.com to name a few. It is clear that there is a major manufacturers defect that Honda chooses to ignore. I chose to buy a brand new Honda Civic with the intentions of keeping it for at least a good ten years. I previously owned a 1991 Honda Civic which I purchased brand new and had for over ten years with no need for a new transmission even past the 150,000 mile mark. When time came to purchase a new car I decided on the 2001 Honda Civic hoping to get a good 10 years out of the car. BIG MISTAKE!!! I will never consider or recommend another HONDA or an Acura vehicle in my life, not because there is a manufacturing defect, but because of Hondas blatant disregard and lack of loyalty to their customers. If American Honda Motor Co., Inc did the right thing and reimburse me for at least one of the repairs then I would be more understanding. It is not the first time that there is a manufacturing defect, but the way it is being handled by American Honda Motor Co., Inc is appalling. I will make it a point to share my horrendous experience with my Honda and American Honda Motor Co., Inc. with as many people as possible. I find it hard to believe that Honda is unaware of the issues their customers have been having. I also find it hard to believe that Honda does not know that this transmission failure crisis is their defect, not the customers. I am sure that American Honda Motor Co., Inc expects their transmissions to last more than 75,000 miles. Yet they choose to ignore us, the consumers.
After my transmission was rebuilt for the second time and finding out that this is Hondas manufacturing defect I contact Honda Customer Service on Oct. 21, 2008 at 7:17pm EST at (800) 999-1009 and inquired about a "goodwill repair". First I spoke with Oralia Perez. She told me that since my car was not regularly serviced at a Honda dealer that I could not be considered for a goodwill repair. I informed her that I have had regular maintenance done on my car by NY State licensed and registered mechanics. I also informed her that no one told me that I had to have my car serviced at a Honda dealer for the life of the car in order for Honda to appreciate me as a customer and look into my problems I am facing with my car. She told me that the owners manual says to take the car to a Honda dealer to be serviced. She just kept repeating the same thing saying that since I had not had my car regularly serviced at a Honda dealer that my case will not be considered for a goodwill repair. She would not even discuss my transmission problems. It was as if I was talking to a machine. All my concerns and issues were falling on deaf ears. I finally asked to speak to a supervisor. After waiting on hold for about ten minutes, Oralia Perez comes back on the phone saying that her supervisor agreed with her and that since I did not have my car regularly serviced at a Honda dealer that I could not be considered for a goodwill repair. I again asked to speak to a supervisor because Oralia refused to address my issue and kept referring back to the so called policy that in order to be considered for a goodwill repair I would have had to have all regular maintenance done on my car by a Honda dealer. She again ignored my request and said that her supervisor said there was nothing more that they could do for me. I told her that I had my owners manual in front of me and asked her for a page number where I can find a statement that says that I must take my car to a to take the car to a Honda dealer for regular service in order to be considered for a goodwill repair. She could not give me a page number. I then asked to speak to her supervisor again. Finally at 7:41pm EST Caroline Chaw comes on the phone. She says the same thing. She said that it is Hondas policy that in order to be considered for a goodwill repair I would have had to have all regular maintenance done on my car by a Honda dealer. I informed her that this policy was never disclosed to me, not in the owners manual nor at the dealership where I purchased the car. Again she just kept repeating that this was Hondas policy. I asked to speak to someone above her hoping to get someone who would address my issue with my transmission and not keep repeating a policy that was never conveyed to me, the consumer. She said that there was no one there that was above her and that I would have to call back tomorrow. After insisting a bit she gave me the name of her supervisor, Durwin Gonzalez. I chose not to call him and waste anymore of my time with them and instead write this letter and post as many complaints on as many websites as possible to get my problem heard since Honda wont listen.
I am extremely frustrated that the people I spoke to at American Honda Motor Co., Inc would not even address my concerns about my transmission problems. Instead they just kept repeating a policy that consumers are not made aware of. I am extremely dissatisfied with my 2001 Honda Civic, with the way American Honda Motor Co., Inc is treating me and the thousand other consumers that are having the same issues, and also with the extreme lack of customer care provided by American Honda Motor Co., Inc. I hope to get rid of this car as soon as possible and never have anything to do with American Honda Motor Co., Inc, its vehicles, or its employee ever again. The only thing I learned from this experience so far is that American Honda Motor Co., Inc has no goodwill.

  • Automatic transmission
  • 121,175 miles

Civic EX

  • Automatic transmission
  • 120,000 miles

On September 12, 2008 the transmission on my 2001 Honda Civic EX failed. I had about 120,000 miles on it. I was at a stop light and put my foot on the gas and my car would not move. A kind person behind me in the long line of cars helped to push my car off to the shoulder. I had my car towed to our Honda dealership in Ofallon IL. Their estimate for the repair was $4000. They would replace the transmission. I called several mechanics in our area and they would rebuild the transmission for about $2000. While talking to a mechanic he told me that he has seen many transmission problems with Honda. After reading complaints on this site, I found out about a goodwill repair from Honda. So I called Honda of America and a case manager worked with our Honda dealership in Ofallon. The final cost for the repair was $1768. At the dealership they replaced my transmission not rebuilt it. It was still far more money than I wanted to spend on a car that I thought was reliable, but better than $4000. Honda of America told me that if you take it to a mechanic rather than the dealership, they might reimburse you. You would have to send in the paperwork and a casemanager would review it.

Civic LX

  • Automatic transmission
  • 91,200 miles

The 200th transmission failure of the Honda Civic 2001 recorded on Car Complaints. Not something that I am proud of!!!

I bought a new Honda Civic in 2001 based in large part on its, supposed, reliability. Last Thursday my transmission failed on my way home from work. I was driving on Route 9 in Massachusetts and the car started to slow down, then I found myself reving the car as if it was in neutral. Obviously, this was pretty dangerous as I was on a highway. I got AAA to tow it to the nearest mechanic who confirmed that the transmission had failed, and that there were no obvious reasons why. He also mentioned that he had a previous customer with a 2001 Civic who had got a goodwill adjustment from Honda when she brought it to a dealer (as I had just over 91,000 miles on my car and the Transmission wasn't scheduled to be serviced until 120,000 miles there was reason to expect that they would do the same for me).

I contacted Honda who told me to bring my car to a dealership and that they would deal with it but that there was no guarantee of an adjustment. The Honda dealership phoned me the next day to let me know that there would be no goodwill adjustment.
I checked online and found this site, so I phoned customer services to determine why I hadnt received one. After the Honda representative had gathered all of my information, she phoned me back to say that the regional office had determined that there should be no adjustment in my case. The only explanation that I was given was that I had my car serviced by independents. As this was not the case, I explained that the major services were performed in 3 different Honda dealerships but that I had the smaller services performed by independent operators (The main reason being that I brought my Civic in for the 60,000 mile service at my local Honda dealership who offered to drive me to a place of my choosing and pick me up to collect my car, as the service would take an hour. They dropped me off at a local coffee shop. After 4 hours and 3 phone calls (I phoned after an hour and a half and was told that they would collect me in half an hour) they eventually picked me up. As the alternative Honda dealership is an hour away, I decided to get minor services at independent dealerships. I think that this is understandable). When I asked again, I was told that the decision for adjustments was based on customer loyalty and I used independents for my services. I found the reply petty, as it was not true, so I told her that I would tape the conversation for the record. She refused (a bizarre response because she told me at the start of the conversation that we would be recorded). Also, given that my next car was going to be a Civic Hybrid, I find the customer loyalty criterion to be laughable.

I told the dealership to go ahead with the repair (I was pretty much stuck without a car). It came to $2900 (about half the price of the car). When I picked up the car I asked for the Diagnostic output. I was told that they didn't have the ability to print out the diagnostic (I needed the diagnostic to get the error code ... because I am not going to let this lie, I will keep writing and complaining to every internet site that I can until I get this sorted, or until someone begins a class action suit). They didn't have the ability to print out the diagnostic results??????

As you can imagine, now I am PISSED. I pay $90 for a diagnostic test and I don't have the results. (they tried to charge me another $90 for another diagnostic test because my SRS light is on .... scam artists ripping people off ... one diagnostic test should give all of the error codes that they need).

I am just back from the dealership. You can imagine that Honda are going to get a phone call on Monday morning.

Honda have dropped the ball on this one. There is no way that I am going to get another Honda if this is not resolved (which is a pity because I was looking forward to getting a Civic Hybrid .... it is Prius for me if they don't get their act together).

Civic LX 1.8L?

  • Automatic transmission
  • 75,000 miles

my 2001 LX civic automatic with 75000 miles started having transmission slip when put in reverse and drive. I checked consumers report and noticed the 2001 civic is starting to get develop a reputation for automatic transmission problems. 2002-03 will probably start getting more complaints as the miles start get over 50000. Good luck to you owners of these. My local Honda dealer is aware of the problem, but they seem to want to try and act as if its not that common. I bet that the problem will only continue to get worse. I hope everyone who has a similar problem will continue to complain and hold Honda accountable and responsible for putting an inferior transmission in these cars. People often buy these cars for their reliability and hopefully Honda will stand by their product and stop tap dancing as if their isn't anything wrong. Tell your dealers and reps that you won't buy their products and cars if they won't fix things when they break or fail way before their expected time.

Seems Honda has a problem with the 2001 to 2003 model year Civics and CR-V transmissions. IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO BUY AN '01 TO '03 CIVIC OR CR-V STEER VERY VERY CLEAR OF ONES WITH AUTOMATICS BAD THINGS WILL. I REPEAT WILL HAPPEN. I Had the same problem like everyone else on here, was running fine then BAM my tranny took a dump on me (hm... someone could take that the wrong way but you know what I mean lol) no warning signs or nothing. Only problem I ever had with this car. What a joke of a transmission they put in these. Next stop is a manual.

I have had a Civic 2001 for almost 8 years and has been excellent just like an Accord 2002 and CRV 2006 that I also own but last week the transmission of the civic suddenly failed. It just stopped at a very busy street. I took it to Honda today and expect a quote in the following days. Doing a research in internet I found that this is a common problem with this transmission. It is a pity that such a good car as Honda is have this kind of problems and that the factory has not acknowledged and called for a recall on this. I will spread the word about this with my automotive colleagues.

Civic

  • Automatic transmission
  • 108,520 miles

On the evening of August 18, my son who was to start a new position on Sept 2, which required him to relocate from Ashland, OH to Kalamazoo, MI, was visiting a friend in Toledo, OH when the automatic transmission on his 2001 Honda Civic DX failed. He had been stopped at a stoplight and when the light changed he could not get the car to go forward or into reverse. Fortunately he was adjacent to a service station and was able to push the car off the road into the service station. He called our insurance company who dispatched a wrecker to tow it to the Honda dealership in Toledo as he was several hundred miles from home and the dealership from which we had purchased the car in 2003. The next morning he explained the problem to the service manager at Brown Honda in Toledo and asked them to check out the car. At this point we had no idea that there was a problem with the automatic transmissions on the 2001 Civics and so we were shocked when we learned that the transmission would need to be replaced because the torque converter had failed. My son was quoted the price of $3,800 for a factory built replacement transmission or $2,500 for a used transmission w/ only a 7,000 mile warranty. I called a local transmission shop in PA where I live to see what their cost would be to replace the transmission and was told that they were seeing "many" cases of transmission failures on the 2001 Civics and that we should contact Honda to see if they were offering some assistance to owners on the cost of transmission repairs. I "googled" transmission problems for Honda Civics and was hoping there would be a Honda web site but found your site instead. After reading through many of the complaints I called Honda of America and asked them what they could do to help w/ the repairs. I explained that we had purchased the Honda because of their "excellent" reputation and that we had expected to get many trouble free years and many miles on the car. I told him of the many cases of transmission failures that were reported on your site and that one in particular mentioned a "goodwill" adjustment that Honda had made on the cost of repairs. The person I spoke to said that the goodwill adjustment was probably made on a car that had less than 100,000 miles but since my son's car had 108,500 miles on it there was nothing they could do. When I told them that the car I read about had 123,000 miles he proceeded to ask more questions. I told him what the local transmission shop had told me about other problems they were seeing w/ the 2001 Civics. I also told him that my son had spoken to an independent transmission repair shop in Toledo and was quoted $2,500 for a factory rebuilt transmission. The individual I spoke to from Honda of America was very interested in the fact that I had been told that this was a common problem and also what the local Honda service manager had told my son. He told me that he could not offer me anything but that he would report our case to a supervisor. My son was contacted the next day by Honda of America and they asked him what would it take to satisfy him which of course he said he wanted a new transmission w/o charge. When he was told they could not do that he then said that at least they could replace his transmission w/ a factory rebuilt transmission at the same cost as the independent. When Honda of America got back to my son the following day they agreed that Brown Honda of Toledo would install a factory rebuilt transmission for $2500. When my son picked up the car after transmission was installed on August 27 the bill came to $1,553.95. The bill stated it was a Goodwill Adjustment and it looks like Honda of America covered 75% of the total charges and we got stuck w/ 25% of the cost. I am thankful for your site because without it I am sure we would have ended up paying at least $2500 at the local transmission shop. I am very disappointed that Honda has not publicly acknowledged that there is a problem w/ these transmissions and that people are getting stuck w/ the costly repairs. As I stated previously we bought the Civic because of what we thought was their excellent reputation.

Civic EX 1.7L

2001 Civic EX, mother had bought it brand new and just recently payed it off.

I acquired it a few months ago @ 53k.

She's a teacher and drove the car VERY lightly and had all oil changes etc done at the mechanic (not dealer)

Around the time I bought the car from her I found this site and a feeling of impending doom I couldn't shake.

The only thing I could say would give a hint of a problem was a harsh downshift from 3-2 but this was noticed only occasionally when accelerating out of a turn.

Yesterday, driving on the highway off the BKLYN Bridge, my car failed, literally from working 100% to 0% (neutral revving) within a matter of a few minutes.

I'm pissed to say the last and will be exploring all possible options and reporting my findings here ...

BTW we just bought a FIT... hopefully the same story wont occur again ..

Dropped it off at dealer they said it came up as internal failure and want to replace it at my cost. I'm looking for another route. shouldn't the guy i bought it from less than 24 hours be responsible 4 this or shouldn't Honda recall this it now seems a common problem. My Honda civic transmission died last year around oct, well no problem I will get it towed to the dealer ok, well who has 3 grand on hand not me. I have a Acura mdx that I drive in the winter. well within one and half months the transmission failed on that, but I was lucky it had 40k on that and they paid for that with a one year warranty and 1500 for other things regarding that. So fast forward currently my car now I have the money just in case. of course it needs to replaced and 2700 or 2800 needed for the repair. I called Honda regarding the transmission and said sorry it's out of warranty and your stuck with it. Well do you think I will buy another Honda product ever. 2 cars in less than 2 months transmissions. My family has had several Honda's never again. and no Acura's neither. Hello toyota, Lexus

I am also one of the victim of Honda transmission failure. I was in middle of the intersection and car just died. It can not move. Everybody was screaming at me. I tried a lot but couldn't move my car. With the help of 2 person i just pulled my car aside. I towed the vehicle to a ready Honda and decided to research Honda transmission problems and came across this website to which I was very shocked that there were so many people having the same problems which ended in rebuilding or replacing the transmission.Service center is asking for $3600 without tax to rebuild thee transmission. It was a big surprise for me. i am in a bad situation "can't repair or sell". i can not afford a big expense. I did regular servicing for Honda Service center.still i find this problem. We were lucky to get off the freeway safely. We were told by the Honda Dealer that we had a transmission failure and the internal clutch failed. They said they had never heard of this type of problem and that it was probably only our car that has experienced it. Then they told us it would cost $3,300 to repair. They also suggested that Honda of America might help but they could not offer us any price break at this time.

  • Automatic transmission
  • 53,000 miles

I was driving one night and my car seemed to start shifting abruptly. The problem quickly got worse and worse. Then my check engine light came on. Shortly after it did, I had a hard time even getting the car to move when I put it into gear, either forward or reverse. Then it totally quit on me. You could put the shifter into gear, but the car wouldn't move. I walked several miles to a gas station to get some automatic transmission fluid to put in the car because I figured with only 53000 miles on the car and no prior warning of any problems it had to be something simple. I got a ride back to my car, put in the fluid, and still could get the car to do nothing. When I went home after I gave up and resolved that I would have to take it to a repair shop the next day, I Googled the problem that I had had to see if I might get a better idea of what I was facing. That's when I found out about the problems that the Civic was having with automatic transmissions.
The next day, I called my normal repair shop to ask if they did automatic transmission work. The service manager told me that they didn't do that kind of work, but asked about the problem. When I told him what happened and what make and model I owned, he told me to call Honda, because he had heard that they had extended the warranties on some cars and that they had had nothing but problems with those transmissions. I called my dealer and they told me they would check on it and call me back in a couple of hours(they didn't). When I called back they said that Honda had extended the warranty on some Accords but not on Civics. He did say that there was some chance that Honda might help but that I would have to have ALL the service records from the very beginning for them to even consider it. I told him that I wasn't the first owner but considering that the transmission wasn't scheduled to be serviced until 120000 miles and the other service records were irrelevant, I didn't see what difference it made whether I had the oil change records or not. He said that they would want them so I decided that Honda was a waste of time so I blew them off.
I took my car to a recommended shop and was once again told that Hondas tended to have transmission problems. The next day I got the news: $2400 to totally rebuild the transmission. The time wasted talking to Honda just meant another day of renting a car.
This was the first and last Honda I will own. My girlfriend owns a 2001 which up until now has been flawless, but under the circumstances she is looking at unloading it at the first hint of any trouble. When I get all my information together, I will try sending a letter to Honda's national office to see if maybe by some chance I could get some assistance paying for this, but particularly since I chose to go around their worthless dealership I don't anticipate any luck on this. When I am rejected, I have already looked online for lawyers that handle class action suits and I plan on contacting one. Once again even if a suit is possibly filed, I don't expect any great help with the heavy financial cost of this, but I would like to see Honda pay a price because there is no doubt in my mind they know and have known about this problem for some time. But they're too cheap and protective of their "quality" image to admit that they have made cars with a catastrophic defect.

My car was running absolutely fine.. no problems what so ever! Then out of nowhere, i'm pulling onto the hwy and just like that, the transmission failed! No warning, No jerking, no sluggishness... NOTHING! Just died right then and there!! It's 11 o'clock at night and i'm about 20 miles from home and i THANK GOD my husband was with me or i would have been scared to death! We had to call a tow truck and he dropped our car off at a shop for us. I've had a mustang before and it's transmission went out but it at least gave me signs that it was dying. I actually was able to take it easy and drive on it for 3 weeks!! But i definitely did NOT expect this out of a Honda!!!!!! None of the gears work. The tranny is completely dead!! Reliable? I think not! Please, think twice before you buy a Honda! Really do your homework!! I will never buy one again!! Definitely not after reading all the same complaints on this site!!!

  • 123,000 miles

Yesterday Morning the wife and I got into the Civic for probably the last time. On our way to work I noticed the tranny started kicking out of gear when shifting from 2nd to 3rd and I said it looks like I need to take it in for repairs soon. I got to work 15 miles later and forgot all about it. That car never made it home.

Over the last 3 months I've had to baby the car because every time I went to accelerate from a stop or low speed it would bang pretty hard if you didn't ease on the gas. I now believe since reading some complaints that the most likely cause has been the torque converter has failed. I'm going to have to spend the money I don't have to get this civic back on track!

Unfortunately for me, I am another Honda Civic transmission victim. I was driving on a very busy double-landed road when my transmission failed. The car just slipped into a lower gear and the engine would rev when I pressed the gas. It just slowly came to a stop (despite the glaring horns and cars almost slamming into me). It would go forward or in reverse and I've been told that I need an entirely new transmission.
AND to add insult to injury, after learning that I was going to be out thousands of dollars to fix this, I learn that this is a very common Civic problem!!!?!?!?!?!?!? Their awful customer service department even confirmed that they are aware of the problem???!?!?!!!! I'm beyond furious!!! I can not believe Honda has not issued a recall??? I'm so lucky that it was daytime in a safe area and that no one rear-ended me when I was stopped in the lane of traffic I was in. I've read all the blogs on this topic and others have not been as "lucky" as me!
To think that I bought a Honda because of its safe reliable reputation... what a joke! This company has thousands and thousands of cars out there that they know are time bombs, waiting to die at any second, and they are not doing ANYTHING about it?!?!! What kind of "safe reliable" company would allow that? I'm disgusted with Honda and will never buy one again! I've had nothing but problems with my piece of junk!

Just like everyone else in this category, my transmission suddenly failed at about 120k miles. However, my experience with Honda was different, and so I'd like to offer some encouragement to others to try to work with their Honda service center as well as American Honda. My dealer, Hennessy Honda in Woodstock GA, quoted me $2,500 to replace my broken transmission with a rebuilt one. After I authorized the service (I also looked into just getting a new car, but it proved to be more financially sound to do the repairs instead), I asked my Service Manager, Kevin Etters, if they would work with me on the price, as both my husband and I have been loyal Honda customers (both for purchases and service) for years. In the end Kevin was able to knock about $400 off the price. I also called American Honda and asked if they could do anything to help with the costs, as this is a known problem for 2001 Civics and I should not have to replace the transmission at 120k. My case was assigned to Scott, who called me within about 4 business days and asked me to fax him my invoice from Hennessey Honda. Once he received it, he called me again and asked what they could do for me (I also explained to him that we are loyal to Honda and would like to keep it that way). I asked him if they could cover either the parts or labor, and without even giving him a specific price point, he authorized reimbursement for the labor, which was a little more than $600. So in total, we were able to save/recoup a little over $1,000 from the original quote, and the repairs ending up costing about $1,500. Well worth it, when now, with the transmission working again, my car's resale value is somewhere in the ballpark of $5k-$7k. I just wanted to share this information, since my experience has been different from most people posting to this website. It's definitely worth the call to American Honda, and try to work with your service center as well. Honda has kept me as a customer, and I'm glad, because the new CRV is totally cute.

I bought this car thinking like everyone else it was the best deal, I was very wrong. The transmission started slipping in the morning around 8am and by 6 that evening, it went out. I was stranded with my 4 month old daughter, just started my new job that day, and was now in a financial rut without a car. Good luck to anyone who can get Honda to help them, it just doesn't happen. They acted like i was the first one to have this problem !! So as I'm typing this complaint, I can see my Honda out the window just sitting there in the driveway like it has been for about 4 months now, still making the car payment and fighting with Honda to get this resolved. I wouldn't wish this problem on anyone, it a financial burden and it's a big problem. HONDA -- YOU'VE FOR SURE LOST ANOTHER BUYER!!!! NEVER AGAIN!!!

I am another victim of the 2001 Honda Civic faulty transmission. I own two of them. Same year. Same make. Driving along one day and the transmission just died on me. On the highway with my family in the car. Luckily we were able to get off to the side before anything bad happened. Honda is quoting me $2800 to fix. After reading everyones complaints, I can see that inaction on their part is pretty typical. I am going to see what kind of "consideration" they will give me and then probably have the car towed to another shop. I hear they can be fixed for about $1,000 less.

I can't believe this. I bought this Honda in 2003, and have noticed the transmission slipping lately. All of a sudden today, it just failed. It goes very slow in reverse, but that is it. I would like to join in a class action lawsuit against Honda. I would never have thought this would happen on a Honda, such a good reputation vehicle, at 108,000 miles.

Same problem everyone else has with their 2001 Civic transmission, no gears work. It went from working fine to not working at all in the span of 2 minutes with no prior indication of a problem.
I'll spare you from another sob story about how dangerous it was when it happened. I did manage to get in the right lane and roll off the crowded bridge over the Delaware River at rush hour in a not so nice part of town (Camden).
Honda will admit nothing and do nothing for me. If I had taken it to a Honda dealer then there's a very remote chance they may. I wasn't willing to take that chance since Honda doesn't fix transmissions they just replace them and it would have cost considerably more then going elsewhere.
I was told by the mechanic doing the repair that the torque converter disintegrated and trashed the rest of the transmission requiring a full rebuild.
Remind me to get a standard transmission in my next car (Hyundai)!!!!!!!!

Just like all the other cases reported here, the transmission on my 2001 Honda Civic just went out without warning. I do not want to waste time describing the details. Rather, I want to make suggestions on what to do about it. In my case, I have always written to newspapers' editors on current news items so I firmly believe that the pen is a mighty sword. The biggest regional newspaper in my area is called the San Jose Mercury News and they have a columnist named Mr. Roadshow. I am going to write to him about this and hopefully my letter will be printed and if enough people respond, maybe the Mercury will do some kind of investigative report on it. When I called Honda Corporate this morning to open up a case for claiming the repair costs ($2800), the tow charges ($76) and the rental car ($50/day), I made sure that they know I am working with the newspaper. I made a big deal about them taking down my contact information and I repeated every bit of information they gave me. I am going to do a journal on the whole ordeal and make my story into a case study for Mr. Roadshow. Other things I can think of doing is calling a radio station or a TV station. My local Channel 7 (ABC) has some consumer advocacy program called "7 On Your Side". Contacting the Consumers' Union may also help.
But, one thing for sure, I will never buy another Honda. It will be Toyota and nothing else for me from now on.

I bought a 2001 Civic new and have paid the dealership for all recommended maintenance to ensure warranty coverage. The extended warranty ran out last year and of course the transmission failed on our first long trip with it. The "Check Engine" light flashed while climbing a hill and there was a loss of power. Pulled over at top of hill and all seemed ok. Engine temp was normal, no leaks, pings or knocks. Continued to cabin and took to the closest dealership the next day. They replaced spark plugs for $200 and said all ok. 10 minutes down the road the tranny failed while passing a motorhome in heavy traffic. Barely made it to the side of the road without a crash. No deal from Kamloops Honda but Honda Canada covered $1300 of the replacement cost. Still cost $3000 plus a week of car rental. But working now. Won't buy that CRV now. Also had an engine mount go a couple of months ago as well. What a lemon this is turning out to be.

I heard a loud "ping" that signaled the beginning of the end of my tranny.

Took it to the Honda dealer in Woodstock, ON, who by the way are excellent. They replaced the transmission under warranty. I squeaked in as the Canadian warranty was 100,000km and I was 2,000 shy of it. It leaves me to ponder whether I would have said they were awesome if it happen 2,000km later.

It does make me fearful that it will happen again, and next time it will be my expense.

I have a 2001 Civic EX with automatic transmission. The tranny suddenly failed on me the other day. I had it towed to the dealership. They had it for a whole day before they could tell me that the tranny had died. They explained that their policy doesn't allow for specific diagnosis or repair of the problem, just replacement of the entire transmission which would cost over $2500 plus I'd probably have to take it to get the alignment done afterwards. The maintenance schedule doesn't even show that the tranny needs to be serviced until 120k miles so it stands to reason it is expected to last past that mark at least. Not until I requested to report this to Honda did the dealer give me their information. I filed the case today and am awaiting their response.

I have a few things to complain about. . . .
I bought a 2001 Honda Civic in 2006, so it was about 5 years old. I never had a problem with it until about 2 weeks ago.
I noticed my transmission was slipping and then about 2-3 days later (on my birthday)the car just broke down. It would run, but it wouldn't go anywhere.
I had it towed to a local transmission shop and ended up needing the torque converter replaced. I got it back about 3 days later on a Wednesday. The Friday after that (4th of July) I couldn't get the damn car out of park. I had it towed for the 2nd time back to the transmission shop. They fixed it and gave it back the next day and also told me that 2 of my motor mounts needed replacing. UUUuuggghhh!! About 20 minutes after leaving the shop I heard a loud noise under my hood. It sounded like I had busted my tire, then I heard a loud grinding noise. I thought 'GREAT. What else could go wrong?!' I called the transmission guy AGAIN and had it towed AGAIN (for the THIRD time in two weeks) and found out that my ball joint in the front passenger side had busted. UUUUUGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!.
I don't think I will ever own another CIVIC again. An Accord maybe.
This whole experience has cost me well over $2,400.00.
I thought these little cars were suppose to save you money. Not put you so far in the whole you can't see the light anymore.

I bought this car brand new in 2001 and changed transmission oil every 15,000 mile with Honda transmission oil. No leakage around transmission block. Honda never failed me before, and I think Honda should consider a recall to solve this misery problem. I will stay away from Honda until I heard something from the company how they deal with this problem.

Add me to the ranks of victims of Honda -- thought I was buying a reliable car and at 80,000 miles my transmission quit. Torque conversion failure. This is clearly a manufacturers defect and I'm left holding the bag. I followed advice I found here and called American Honda for a goodwill repair. When it quit moving in the middle of the road I lucked out to get it off to the side before I lost all momentum. I had AAA tow it to the dealer - didn't know what else to do-- and I haven't had the work done yet because I still don't know if Honda will give me any "goodwill." Of course my extended warranty has expired so I'm completely at their mercy. I did perform required maintenance but at an independent Honda repair shop so I don't know what kind of goodwill they'll extend. I've been calling around and the dealer is at least $1200 higher than an independent Honda shop for the repair.
I want to join a class action suit -- doesn't anyone out there know a lawyer who would file for us? This is clearly a safety issue; suddenly the engine started revving with no forward momentum -- and with absolutely NO WARNING!! What if I had been on a freeway at the time - or on a steep hill?? Are they waiting for people to get killed before they take this seriously?? SILLY ME, OF COURSE THEY ARE!! Stay away from the 2001 Honda Civic if you're shopping around for a reliable used car.

I would like to thank Honda for convincing my parents to never buy a Honda again. My parent’s ’01 Civic LX recently died while on the highway in Houston. The dealership scanned OBDII codes P1361 and P0740. The service adviser told my parents the P0740 is transmission failure. To fix it, they replaced the entire transmission for over $4000.

When I got back home, I checked the two OBDII codes. P0740 is Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Malfunction, which I believe could be resolved with replacing the solenoid, which is a much cheaper alternative. I asked the service adviser why they didn’t do that, I was told that the dealership “doesn’t mess with the stuff inside.” That made a lot of sense to me, it’s like replaces your whole house because your toilet doesn’t flush. My parents should have taken the car to a tranny shop and fix the part that was broken.

Just a side note, this is our 2nd Honda. Both of which had tranny problem. Our 1994 Honda Accord also had a tranny problem that caused the tranny to not upshift.

I purchased a Honda Civic because they are supposed to be reliable. My teenage daughter was out late at night returning from work and the transmission failed. Luckily she got the car off the road safely. You don't want your daughter stuck in that situation. That's why we got her a Honda. It would not go into any gear. Completely dead. Had to have it towed. It's at a transmission repair shop now.

I neeeed help!!! Im 21, full time working student tryin to pay off this piece of sh*t Honda civic that I bought 3 1/2 years ago. It only has about 73000 miles on it and its screwing up on me everyday!!! It drives for a few miles and stops accelerating and shudders. I have to turn it off and wait for a few mins before i can turn it back on and drive it. But it stalls and shuts down so often I don't know what the hell is wrong with it. I changed the camshaft censor, which was assumed to be my first problem, that cost $80, but then it happened the day after I fixed the camshaft censor. It happens so randomly everyday Im scared to drive anywhere!! I don't have the time and money to be fixing this so called reliable piece of sh*t car. Can someone help me out or tell me how I can solve this issue without costing an arm and a leg.

.. I will never buy a Honda again thats for damn sure. I have to 10,000 to pay off, WHAT A F*CKING RIP. My bf has a saturn and a ford and its older than my Honda but he isn't having a problem with those cars. THis is just sad sad sad. I cant believe ppl think hondas are good cars.

I was driving my 2001 Honda Civic down the highway in Dallas and the transmission goes out - talk about dangerous. I almost got killed as my car slowed down and oncoming traffic almost slammed into me as I tried to get over to the shoulder. I definitely don't expect a failed transmission for a car that only has ~73k miles. What a piece of crap. Has anyone had any luck with filing a small claims suit against Honda. From what I've read and from what the mechanics have told me this is a common problem.

I own a 2001 honda civic ex and I bought it because I thought Honda's were supposed to be the most reliable cars. I have owned the car for several years and until the transmission died on me recently, I hadn't had too many problems, aside from the muffler constantly rattling. Well, the Honda was running fine with no signs of dying, until wife was driving to pick up our foster kids from a visit with their mother. It was during this 15 minute drive that the transmission completely died, leaving my wife stranded on an overpass and our foster kids stranded at the family job and service center for a little longer than they would like to be there. The transmission was slipping a little bit earlier in the day, then it stopped completely. Thank you 2001 Honda Civic for being completely worthless at this point. Why won't Honda recognize this problem and pay for there mistakes in 2001. Based upon what I learned from this page (http://www.hondaproblems.com/Civic/transmission-failure.shtml) I will try calling them to see if they will pick up some of the cost to get a new transmission. I'll keep you updated.

My daughter was at the NJ shore with her 2001 Civic and called me because the car would not go into gear at the parking lot. I drove 80 miles, picked her up and on monday called Avalon Honda to have it towed. Later that day they said they had changed the transmission fluid and "fixed" the problem which they had seen in other Civics. I drove my daughter back to the Avalon dealer and then received a call that her transmission had slowed down on the expressway and she had pulled over twice. After she reached home I called the local Honda dealer who towed the car and informed me the transmission had failed ( at 41k miles).I called honda in Torrance CA. to complain about the misdiagnosis by the NJ dealer, the danger to my daughter on the highway and 2 towing bills. I also informed them that my wife drove a 2004 Accord and I was on my 2
