I had slipping problem with my transmission in 2005. I searched online and found out many Honda owners had same problem. I called Honda America, but they didn't give a sh*t about it. I ended up paying $2,200 out of my own pocket to a Honda dealer to have the transmission fixed. The dealer didn't do a good job, they didn't replace the transmission(with that much $, I thought they would replace it with a used one at least), instead they took the worn parts out of the transmission and replaced them with new parts (this is the story they told me). As soon as I got my car back, I went back to see them the next day. Somehow the new parts reduced the slipping problem a bit, but problem didn't go away, transmission still slipped. I'm still driving my Accord and suffering the slipping problem every day. This is my first Honda and will be the last one, and I'm telling my friends not to buy Honda (all models) because obviously Honda has huge technical problems with their transmissions and I don't want my friends going through all the hard time that I had. To car buyers: HONDA's reputation is not as good as you think, so research more before you commit to it!

I bought this car from a used car seller. When he sold this car to me, he said everything is OK and I needn't to check it. Thus I bought it with a high price at 89K miles.Four months later, the transmission begins to slip, with code P0730 and P1751. During the highway back home, we have to drive at 30-40mph. It's very dangerous for us. Luckily, all other cars speed up us as we let the urgent light on. Thanks Gosh. When the report was given by one dealer, he said we should pay about 3000 $ to change a rebuilt transmission. We were very angry. When we asked whether this transmission should be recalled by Honda. He said No. When we give the report to the used car boss, he said we may pay 2500$ to change a used transmission. What should I do? I think if I change a used transmission, and it may fail in one or less than one year. There is no warranty for the part. If I sold this car to the boss, he decrease 4000$ to buy it. I think Honda should recall the transmission or at least half price the transmission. I hate Honda and will never buy Honda car, and Japan cars. Who can give me a good suggestion, I should pay another 2500$ or sell it with 4000$ loss. Damed.

In July, had the car to Honda for the ABS light coming on. Upon receipt of the car, received a bill for over $6000 for new transmission, mounts, radiator, battery, etc, you name it, it was listed. When speaking with service manager, I said, "Do I need all this-the car drives fine?" I was told "not now, but very soon. You might as well do a new trans now or buy a new car." I was driving all summer and all fall with car...no problems. Check engine light came on week before Christmas (of course-the mo$t wonderful time of the year)-MY mechanic recommended AAMCO-again, car has no problems. They ran diagnostics and long story short-he replaced 4 Solenoids with the hope that would cure this check engine light. AAMCO said it may fix it, it may not. Again, no problems driving. Check engine light came on again New Year's Day. AAMCO again, ran diagnostics and now the Shift Malfunction code was coming on again. They cleared it and recommended to drive the car, but to be mindful of any problems. Found this website, thank god! and will be contacting Honda prior to any problems to see what they can do for me. Outside of the check engine light, the car has had no other problems and I really have no reason to look for something else. Will keep you posted if anything changes (cross your fingers it won't).

  • Automatic transmission
  • 123,000 miles

I have a 2002 Honda Accord SE 4cyl. I have to admit, since I purchased the car there were no real issues, just routine maintenance (as expected). But lately I have been hearing a loud "humming" sound and my "check engine" light has been coming on. I took it to MY mechanic who diagnosed the problem and told me I needed a new bearing on the front drivers side a catalytic converter (that is why the check engine light was on). This was all repaired in October of 2008. Now, two months later, I noticed that the "check engine" light was on again (there was also some rattling in the front end, (come on I have over 120k miles on it)). I replaced from stabilizer bars and struts and the mechanic told me that the check engine light now revealed a transmission problem. He did a quick once over, and found nothing visibly wrong and he reset the light. Now, three days later the check engine light is on again, I called my mechanic and he told me to bring in the car and make sure it was the same transmission code. If so, he told me that it is common for the solenoid to go bad and also the EVAP solenoid, especially in states that use salt during the winter. The car, as stated before, has had all the required maintenance (oil changes, timing belt......) I really cannot complain, especially with the amount of miles (123k) and years of reliable service. HOWEVER, seeing that all proper maintenance was completed, and the fact that I absolutely love the new accords and want to get one, I also would like Honda to assist me in any transmission repairs that I will eventually have to deal with or I too, will switch to another brand.

Well, I took my car to the Honda Service Center after experiencing some jerking with a cold engine and found out today the transmission needed to be replaced. I just wanted to thank everyone who posted their comments because I was able to ask for the Goodwill Discount up front which reduced the cost by 50%. This does not justify the issue, especially since this is a well known problem which Honda should acknowledge and respond with a recall. Otherwise, why are they willing to give a 50% discount on the repair? I was a big supporter of Honda and unfortunately we will no longer purchase another Honda automobile. I understand cars are not perfect and even Honda can have challenges with their autos, but to have this happen at 86,000 miles is not acceptable and I can no longer continue to be brand loyal. I would have purchased a Honda for the rest of my life......Toyota, here I come!!!

Accord EX 3.0L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 73,000 miles

I bought my Honda Accord in January 2004 from the dealer, and it was slightly used at that point in time. It had only had one owner, and there were barely 8,000 miles on the car when I drove it off the lot. Since then, I have not experienced many problems with the car...until now.

Last week Friday, the check engine light went on. With 73,000+ miles on the car, I had been meaning to take it in for the mileage milestone check-up, and since the engine light went on, I figured now was as good a time as any. Then, I received the phone call that the diagnostic test had detected the transmission was the problem causing the light to go on. "The transmission? How could it be the transmission?", I asked. I should have known something was up when the receptionist told me she had been trying to get in touch with the service manager (RED FLAG #1). She assured me she would get in touch with me later to let me know what he had said. Meanwhile, I was still floored that my transmission was the culprit.

Later that afternoon, I did get a call from the service manager, who explained the problem once again, and he proceeded to tell me that he was going to call American Honda about working with me on this issue. He then wanted to know what I wanted from American Honda. I was dumbfounded because I had never haggled for service before, so naturally I explained I didn't think it was fair to have to pay for any of this. The service manager claimed that in the past (RED FLAG #2), customers had been granted 75% coverage from American Honda, while they only had to cover the remaining cost plus labor. I encouraged him to shoot for 100% coverage, seeing as how I earlier that morning I was looking at $300+ for a 60,000 mile service visit and was now looking at adding another zero to that price. He said he'd get back to me.

Amazingly, he did. This time, he claimed that American Honda wanted to know what else my car needed, to which he gave them a long list of recommended services. Then, the service manager told me American Honda would cover 100% of the transmission IF (RED FLAG #3) I agreed to authorize two of the recommended services: a new battery for $89.99 and an alternator for $415. Should I not go with the recommended services, the service manager could not guarantee American Honda's cooperation in the 100% coverage of the transmission. So...there I stood with a sort of ultimatum regarding my car care. Either I accept the 75% coverage from American Honda and plan to shell out $1,300 on my own to cover the remaining cost of labor, or I can pay $1065.99+tax to take care of the transmission, alternator and battery.

The choice sounds simple, but here are my concerns: would this be a new transmission? is it covered under warranty? are these prices/coverage plans in writing? what about my 60,000 mile service needs? what about the other Honda owners who have had to deal with this same issue? These are the questions I have yet to answer, but I will be contacting the service manager tomorrow to try and get this all in writing or at least negotiate my 60,000 mile services into the deal.

I do wish to thank Scott from AAMCO; I called to get a second opinion in terms of transmission pricing, and he is the one who said I should look into the service bulletin released by Honda. Once I hopped online, I found this site, and many others, that describe other similar situations in detail. Reading about other people's situations has certainly given me more leverage in terms of negotiation power.

Well I'm not alone and I'm glad I found this website b/c I'm bringing these complaints to my dealership. I never would have thought my transmission would fail on a 2002 Accord Coupe Honda with 80,00 MILES! The mechanic said this can happen but I knew that at 80,000 miles on a HONDA IS UNACCEPTABLE. I drove the car maybe 4 out of the 7 years I had possession of the car. This is ridiculous and Honda should be ashamed . I'm never buying a Honda again! I tried calling "Good Will" but with this economy and their stinginess they don't care especially if IT'S HONDA'S FAULT! Someone can get killed with a failed transmission.

I am yet another owner of a 2002 Honda Accord. When I first bought the car I was happy. I'm in sales so I do drive alot. At 72,000 miles I noticed a little bit of slipping, and took it in to my mechanic for a diagnostic test. The transmission was not mentioned. Now, when the car reached 112,000 miles I noticed it slipping again--in low gear, and starting to jerk pretty hard. I have maintained this car really well because I wanted to keep it running after it was paid off (5 months ago). I have changed the timing belt, etc...I have been told the transmission is going out, which normally is not surprising for a car with this mileage, but I found it surprising for Honda. The repairs are going to be very costly---$3,700 which includes engine mounts.

What pisses me off is hearing all the other reports of how Honda is not claiming fault, and is not taking responsibility for this major and costly repairs for their customers. Esp. those still under warranty! A class action lawsuit has not been filed, due to no reported "safety concerns", but Honda needs to be forced to step up and make things right. Any suggestions anyone?

This is in regards to my other post (#15). After getting the trans tested and it came back BAD, I contacted corporate Honda. My rebuilt trans (trans #2) had 38k and is going bad again. Honda said they would only split 60/40 meaning I would have to pay $1000 out of pocket. Since the first trans had been replaced for free, i was only covered for 1yr/12k. After arguing with them for 3 weeks (they do not return phone calls very timely), I got them to pay for 75% and I pay 25% ($625). I am told now that I am paying I will get a 3yr/36,000 miles warranty. S|I am now waiting for trans #3 for this car. Will drive it another 36k and get it tested, if bad again, i'll have Honda replace it for free and get rid of it.

I've had the car for 4 years, and notice this transmission for about a year. The D4 shift kept blinking and check engine light remained illuminated. When I took the car to my mechanic, he informed me that it is not engaging a new transmission. When my wife researched this site to find that this was a very common occurrence with this car, I was not happy. So, I'm registering my complaint and will support any endeavor to make Honda and obsolete purchase or have them honor their product by providing a vehicle that doesn't have transmission problems.

I have a 2002 Accord, loved it when I got it. It was a leased car so I bought it at exactly 36000 miles. I never had a problem, kept the up with the maintenance on the car with my local mechanic. I had a recent issue with the brake light always being on and then finally the other lights started to come on; got nervous and called my mechanic he stated that it sounded like an alternator problem so I got that replaced just this Saturday pass. On Monday night driving from home, my check engine light came as well as the TCS light, oh and the D4 started flashing. Took off today (Tuesday) and gave the car to my mechanic he stated that I have a transmission problem, he called the dealership and was told that my year did not have transmission problem, so he asked me to call Corporate to see if I can get anywhere with them being as though I do not have a warranty anymore and that they should help me. All they did was give me a case number but the customer service guy stated the same thing that the dealership said to my mechanic. So, now I got my mechanic calling corporate to see if he can get anywhere.

I have a bad feeling that I will be stuck paying for a astronomical bill at the end, after already giving my mechanic $550.00 just this past weekend for the alternator and inspections. This will probably be my last Honda and I will go with Toyota from this point forth if there is no resolution.

hi am shane and I am very upset that Honda dealers have no concern how hazard this problem with 2002 transmission can be. I am still driving my car till I find and used transmission. The Honda Co. dealers service department asked me do I have an extended warranty, I said yes, so he looked up my vin and told me sir your extended warranty has just expired. The repair will be my expense of $3400.00 with 3yr warranty.

I told him that this is very unusual for transmission on honda to go out at 80k, he then said am sorry the #130 code and 180 mean its internal problem in transmission.

I told him then fix it and tell Honda to pay for it, He laughed and said no that your responsibility to fix. I told him an internal failure should be a recall .

No response and walked away. Please help me voice my concern to Honda and help get this problem fixed before someone maybe hurt or killed.

I do not understand why Honda is waited to call the vehicles 2002 in for transmission problem at low mileage. Yes I did buy my car for the confidence of reliability from honda and hope to hear them call the vehicle in.

My 2002 Honda Accord was properly maintained according to the extreme level of use specified in the owner's manual. I went to drive to work one morning and my d4 light began to flash and my check engine light came on. ECU codes 700 708. The transmission is failing. I found this website and determined that it is in fact a problem. I took the vehicle to the dealer and they offered to fix it for $2500, down from $3500, with a re-manufactured transmission with a 3-year warranty. I called Honda Corp of America and ended up speaking to the same woman who approved the 25% discount. Honda should be sued for their lack of quality. I have owned 3 Honda's in my lifetime and because of this I will NEVER purchase another one and I recommend that everyone who reads this avoid Honda like the plague, as they refuse to stand behind their product. Honda refuses to take responsibility for their defective transmissions. The 01 Transmission problems resulted in a class-action lawsuit that force Honda to extend the warranty. The same transmission is used in the 02 accords, and Honda has done nothing for the consumers who have been inconvenienced by it.

Transmission was making noise and slipping at 50k, finally got bad at 60k. Took it to the dealer and told them I owned that and a Civic, and that my family combined owned 8 Honda's, all great except for my accord. I normally never take my car to the dealer, but thanks to reading this site and getting a tip to ask for the Good Will discount from the dealer I decided to take it in. Sure enough they said it needed to be replaced and that they would split the cost with me 50/50. My car runs like new now. Trans. included a 3 year / 36,000 mile warranty too. Too bad it still cost me $1400.

Bought my 2002 V6 Honda Accord brand new. Also purchased the Honda maintenance package, had all service performed regularly, timely & at the dealer. I've taken it to a reputable mechanic ever since. Noticed some hesitation in the transmission about 1 week ago. Now it is slipping terribly & failing quickly. Called Honda Cust Service (800-999-1009) to see if there is a transmission recall & rep says there's no record, not even for 2001 Accords. Repair is costing $2,200 & is holding up a trip to the mountains...

I have always said you can't go wrong with a Honda or a Toyota. Looks like I'm only 1/2 right -- it will ONLY be Toyotas for me going forward.

Bought the car with 45k and around 65k starting slipping first when it was cold. By 80k it was slipping first hot or cold and downshifting (like slowing down for a speed bump and hitting the gas to go again) was a PAINFUL SLIP. My uncle is a mechanic for Honda and had told me they extended the warranty for 98-02 Accord up to 100k. Dealer tested and ordered a rebuilt. They called me 3 days later and had my car for a day to replace it. HE DID SAY IF I GOT NO WHERE WITH THE DEALER, WRITE HONDA OF N. AMERICA AND COMPLAIN, THEY WILL REPLACE THEM FREE UP TO100K. I have 127k now and it is starting to show signs of going bad again. Called Honda corporate, they didn't seem to care. Sucks, my first Honda has 245k and my friend still drives it daily, this one though.... its a shame, really only problem i had with this car.

I've noticed this problem for well over a year but everytime I've taken it in I've been told there's no problem with the transmission!!! The transmission keeps slipping and jerking. It started around 75k and is getting worst at 107k. I've noticed that if i accelerate slowly it doesn't happen very often but if I'm trying to accelerate to pass somebody or go through an intersection the call jerks violently and slows down. This is a safety concern and should be replaced for FREE by Honda. I bought a Honda and if I wanted my transmission to go be faulty I would have bought a Ford!!!!!!! Like others on here I am a college student and do not have the funds to spend another dime on this car. I bought a Honda figuring it would last me through college and well into my career but I guess I was wrong.

I thought I could go at least 10 years on my Accord without any significant problems. But I was floored when I was told my car needed a new transmission at 100k. I was told by one dealer that it would be $4000 and Aamco told me it could be anywhere from $2000-$3000 (of course I had to pay about $1000 just for them to take the transmission apart). I called American Honda Co. and they were no help saying that there was no recall and I asked for a goodwill repair and they said it wasn't possible.

Another deal I contacted contacted American Honda Co on my behalf and surprisingly they offered a 50/50 split on the repair. I'm happy that I got it fixed at a reduced rate but I'm not happy because this really should not have happened. And I'm shocked to see that it's happened to so many 2000-2003 Accords. My previous car was a 1997 Accord and I've been a big fan of Hondas but I'm pretty sure this will be my last.

I took my car in at 70,000 miles to get the transmission flushed. Then I had taken it to a Honda dealership to prepare it for winter. At the time the technician mentioned the transmission fluid smelt different and asked if it was truly transmission fluid; which it was. However, later I found out this was only a symptom of my transmission slipping. At 97,000 miles I took it in for a diagnostics test on the transmission and found out the transmission was slipping. It just got worse from there, I replaced the transmission from Honda. I am glad I had it done by my long time mechanic. The 1st automatic transmission was defective and the 2nd has not failed, however its not as smooth as I had anticipated.

I had this job completed at 102,000 and now have 112,000. This is my first Honda Automatic and I will only buy a Honda with a Manuel Transmission. I wish Honda had a recall on this.

I took it in to get 2 estimates - at a Honda dealership and at a different company that fixes cars. Both said that the transmission is beyond repair and needs replaced (and not under warranty and no recalls were documented for this car/issue).

My transmission went out @ 119,00 on my 2002 Accord 4 cyl. Mostly all highway mileage (work commute) as we/my wife racks up around 70 miles minimum per day on the vehicle for 6 days a week.

With that said you can see that the transmission should not have gone out under these circumstances.

You will have to get your car fixed at a Honda dealer which means you will have to pay at least $3000 up front. After that hassle - and I do mean hassle, the Honda dealer will most likely try and bend you over on the repair price because the service dept people have to get their cut too. Bunch of rip off artists and double talkers! I had a very bad experience with Brandon Honda in Florida and will never return there again after the treatment I received by them. Even though they gave me a "next service free" card I will not go back!

A side note about Brandon Honda (in Florida) - when they rode with me to diagnose the problem - the service personnel guy told my wife and I how much these parts actually cost and how the employees get really good discounts and he also said we should just trade the car off to the dealer across the street from Brandon Honda!

I have only scratched the surface here about Brandon Honda's customer service - let's just say they were less than honest on the estimate and the final total of the repair cost. After haggling between the 2 guys at the service desk over the final price and what they quoted me as an estimated price - in other words Brandon Honda exceeded the estimate price and continued work on the vehicle without my permission. This is against the law in Florida. But why should something like that stop them? hardee har har.

About 2 days after the car was fixed it sat there at Brandon Honda and the service guys ( at least one was) getting a little irate (as I was too) over the whole dealing of the matter. It wasn't my fault they were greedy.
Of course I haven't told you everything about the conversations Brandon Honda and I had phone-wise and in person while the vehicle was being fixed. But needless to say Brandon Honda was less than honorable in their dealings with me.

Now where was I - oh yeah - finally one of the service guys went off on me via the phone using an irritated voice and unprofessional language! Very professional - wouldn't you say?. But of course you won't believe me because I have an axe to grind and Brandon Honda has sooo many satisfied customers that I must surely be making this up. It happened.

After you walk out of the Honda dealership (Brandon Honda) with a new reaming, and head spinning from the double talking and a lighter/non existent wallet - you will need to call Honda and ask for a "good-will repair" - even though you are out of warranty.

Honda Corp. knows they have a faulty product and you must tell them that you know that and ask them what they can do for you to resolve the problem and the cost this has incurred on you. Don't get snotty or threaten them with litigation, just be cool and forthright.

Honda Corp. then will give you a case # and you may be bounced around between several case workers over a period of 2 months. This is normal as Honda Corp. hopes you will give up and not bother with them.

Don't give up - keep calling them at least twice a week until you get satisfaction.

This is what I did and Honda Corp. settled with me for $1800. I received the check within 4 days after a 2 month phone game with them.

And yes - I did call Honda Corp about Brandon Honda's treatment of their customer.

Thanks autobeef - I feel better now.

I hate it when it happens, I stay in SF and driving in the city is a pain with this car as I have to stop frequently and it jerks shaking everybody inside. Everytime it happens I hate Honda for NO HELP.
I called Honda Customer Care and they say that the warrant is 3 years or 36k miles, whichever is earlier, so its not under warranty anymore and they cant offer any help. I registered a complaint with NHTSA but Honda customer service has asked me to get it fixed from a Honda dealer and then get back to them for any relief they might offer. Seems again like offering them some business a chance of getting sucked again.
I am not sure what I can do now hopefully there us some cheap solution to my problem or some relief from Honda. I have mostly owned and driven a Honda and I think I shouldn't have depended on just one brand.

Following is my post on transmission "hesitates and shifts very hard" section. I hope it is informative and might help in dealing with Honda. Bill

After reading this forum I decided to call Honda of America on July 8. I spoke with Bertha and she said I would have to take the car to a dealer for a diagnosis. I made a appointment with Mistlin Honda, Modesto Ca. to bring the car in July 11. Mistlin service adviser Bob Wynashe had a technician diagnose the problem with the transmission. He concluded the transmission should be replaced. Bob said he would speak with the Honda rep and get back to me. Bob call approx. two hours later and said Honda would replace the transmission and converter if I would pay approx. $800.00 labor. I agreed and took the car in yesterday. I picked the car up today and the bill was $640.00 or $160.00 less than the estimate. I am totally satisfied with the dealer and a little disappointed with Honda. They know the transmission is a piece of junk and should recall all the 2002 Accords and Civics. However, $640.00 sure beats $3500.00.
If anyone would like to use this information when dealing Honda the dealers' work
order number is: 187866 (Mistlin Honda, Modesto Ca.)

I was told Honda's were the best cars on the road. I think that has changed. This car is jerking into first gear. The dealer said it would cost me 2800 to fix. I bought a Honda so i would not have this problem so early on. I don't have that kind of money. So really, I am stuck with a car note and a broke down Honda Accord.

Bought this car used in January of 2008. In April I noticed that the transmission was shifting odd. Didn't give me a lot of problems, then in May I took a trip to Kentucky and I guess the strain on the tranny from going over the mountains got to it because after that it started slipping and shifting really hard. Well, I took it to the Honda dealership and they said Honda didn't recall it that I would have to pay for the expense out of my pocket. Considering that 1250.00 isn't exactly pocket change I had to wait until I got my stimulus check before I could have it repaired, so I hoped and prayed that it would make until then. Well it didn't. In June I travelled to Tennessee which is only about 20 miles from my house, It didn't give me any problems on the way there at all. The next morning when I got in it to leave, the transmission was gone. It wouldn't pull hills, wouldn't change gears or anything. All it would do it jerk. Honda should really be ashamed of themselves for selling such junk cars. The least they could have done is recall it, considering they knew there was an issue with those transmissions. I wont own another Honda..

Right around 80,000 miles my Accord starting slipping in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. It was also slamming into 1st gear, once it finally made it into 1st gear. However, it only does this when the car is hot - it doesn't do it in the morning on the way to work. But I barely made it home last month, with two babies in the backseat! I received a quote for $3194 from Palm Harbor Honda in Palm Harbor, FL to replace the transmission with a rebuilt. I also received a range from AAMCO to repair for around $1600 - $2200. I replaced the fluid 4 times in the past two months, which has done nothing. The fluid is red and clean and no leaks. (I did find out it is very very easy to change the fluid - there's a drain plug on the bottom of the transmission, use a socket wrench with no sockets to unscrew it, drain it, add 3 qts of Honda ATF into the dipstick and you're done; easier than oil change).

This is obviously a pattern; it seems right around the 80,000 mark there's a good sample of people experiencing the same problem. My mom had a 1992 Accord and replaced the transmission. My sister had a 1998 Accord and replaced the transmission. Now me - NO MORE HONDAS!!

It looks like I should show this webpage to a Honda dealer to reduce my repair cost!!!!

I bought this car certified pre-owned so it is still under warranty (Powertrain) for another 14,000 miles or until May 2009. The car started shifting hard from 1st to 2nd around 60,000 miles, and I had the transmission fluid exchanged shortly thereafter. That seemed to have appeased the problem until recently. I started experiencing the same hard shifting and jerking between 1st and 2nd approximately 20,000 miles after the transmission fluid exchange. Owner's manual says the next transmission service should not be until the odometer hits 90,000 miles. I am concerned as I believe the transmission is faulty and failing. I will be livid if it fails within a short time-frame of the warranty expiration. I would like for Honda to resolve this matter before any further damage to my car.

Brought car to Honda dealership and they said transmission was bad and needed to be replaced for approximately $4000 because there is no recall and warranty had expired. I brought it to an independent transmission place and they did the work for $2300. I called Honda service (800)999-1009 and they said they couldn't help since there was no recall but they would file my complaint. I asked about goodwill repair compensation and they said no because I had repair done at an independent place instead of dealership. Dealership already told me there was no recall and I had to pay full amount of $4000. Doesn't make any sense to me to pay $4000 and hope I get reimbursed later on.

I started experiencing some slipping/jerking on my 2002 Honda Accord at 83,000. I just thought the transmission fluid might be low so I took it into my Honda dealer. Imagine my surprise when they called to tell me that I needed a new transmission! What? As most others have commented, the reason I bought a Honda initially, was the 'reliability' factor.

The dealership did offer me 25% off of the cost up front and basically the only other alternative was to get the transmission rebuilt which they didn't do in-house. I told them I wanted to think it over and then I discovered that I clearly am not the only one with this issue. A friend who used to work for Honda suggested I call the 800# (800-999-1009) to request a goodwill repair. I called, they took my information and advised a case manager would be in touch. The case manager called me approx 36 hours later and was extremely rude and unhelpful. She basically just kept saying that b/c this was my first Honda and I had not used Honda dealers exclusively for service that they couldn't do anything else. She even indicated that I should feel lucky that the dealership where I took my car offered me anything at all since I wasn't their customer (I just moved here and it was my first visit)!

Beware...and if you do call American Honda, I would recommend telling them you are a multi-Honda buyer and have had your service done at Honda dealers...apparently then you are worth something. It appears that unless the dealership is able to do anything, I will be paying $1900 for a remanned transmission that is likely to fail again!

I filed a complaint with the NHTSA and I encourage others to do the same (link below).

Accord EX V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 80,000 miles

My 2002 Accord (80,000 miles) began shifting rather abruptly about four months ago.

At first it was so subtle that I wasn't sure there was really a problem. It gradually got worse until one day I pulled up too far at a red light and had to back up. When I put the car in reverse I heard a loud thump and felt a jerk. The problem became noticeably worse as I continued on my way, so I took the car in that afternoon to the dealership where I bought it (Rick Hendrick Honda in Charleston, SC).

A service technician called me within an hour to tell me that I needed a new transmission. Imagine my surprise! A what?!? A new transmission you say? On a Honda with 80,000 miles? Surely not!! Oh, don't worry, ma'am, I'm sure this will be covered by your extended warranty. A call back ten minutes later: I'm sorry, ma'am, it looks like your extended warranty does NOT cover the transmission, but I'm going to see if Honda will pick up half the cost of a new transmission. That was over a month ago, and I've yet to hear back, despite my repeated calls.

After being put off for several days, I told the dealership to flush the transmission fluid and that I would drive it while I figured out a solution. That was over a month ago and I'm still driving it. And, after at least four calls to the dealership, they have yet to give me an answer on whether they'll pay half the cost of a new transmission. (I was told the fix will cost $2,600).

I'm very disappointed in Honda and in the lack of service from the dealership. I bought this car based on Honda's good reputation for quality, and while I have had no other problems with the car, this is a major problem. A Honda Accord is more expensive than other cars of similar size, and I paid more expecting to get a better product.

I've had my 02 Accord EX-V6 for about 3 yrs now. It presently has about 96K miles on it (my wife drives it). I started noticing hard shifting, especially going into and coming out of park, approximately a year ago. My wife hasn't noted anything significant yet, but I've DEFINITELY noticed that there is a problem. I haven't taken it to the dealer yet because all of the research I've done reports the same thing...the dealers are denying that there is a problem for the most part.

This is the only complaint I have. Other than this issue, the car has been rock-solid and extremely good to us! In fact, I was so pleased with its overall performance that, when my 89 Accord was rear-ended and totaled (at 262K miles), I went and bought another 02 Accord SE! My "newer" Accord is showing just the slightest of hesitation in shifting, but only intermittently.

Like all other Accord owners (especially those that have voiced their concerns in this forum), I purchased my cars for one main reason...the reliability history of this vehicle! I, too, am very concerned by the number of similar complaints about the same performance issue. I think that I will take a trip to the local Honda dealer that just sold me a car two months ago with my concerns. We'll see what happens!

I have done all required maintenance done on my car at Meyer Honda. I had taken my car to the dealer about five or six month ago because it was jerking and seem like it was hard to change gears. On May 9, a light came on so I took it to Honda and ask why was the light on, he said that he would check it out,he did, came back to tell me that I need a transmission and it was going to cost me 5thousand to have it repaired. I stated to him, "That a lie, because I brought my car to you about five or six month ago with this problem and you charged me for something else. He told me that I have been a good customer and he would talk to the service manger for me. I told him that I could talk to him myself ,which I did. The Manager told me that I have been a good customer and he will be out of town for three days and that he was going to talk to the district manager because I had really taken good care of my car by getting the oil change, the maintenance done and any time anything was wrong that I had brought it in. I mention to him that is why I shouldn't have to pay you anything to repair my car. He stated to me that he was going to call me on Friday May 14, he did not, I went to see him on May 20, he stated to me that he was sorry he had not gotten back to me and ask me if the District Manager had called me, I told him no, so he decided to give him a call while I was in his office, he never explain to him that I had brought my car in because it was not changing gears five or six months ago and that they had charged me for something else. After getting of the phone he told me the district manager would split the cost with me 50/50. I told him that was not good enough for me, he told me that he was going to talk to the owner and get back to me, he did not, I called him , he stated that he did not expect to be with the owner that long, He told me at that time that Honda would pay 50% and the owner would be responsible for 25% and I would be responsible for 25%. I told him that I should be responsible for any amount. Well that is the best I can do. After leaving his office I called the Regional Manager, talked to his secretary who took some information and assured me that he would give me a called back. He had not called me back by that evening, i called his office again , she assured me that he was going to give me a called back which he did not until I called back on May 21 when I called his office again and told his secretary that it was very important that I talk to him today. He call me the evening of May 21 to tell me that 50% was all Honda was going to pay and that I was going to pay the other 25% and the Honda Meyer was going to pay 25%. I asked him had he reviewed my car 's record, he assured me that he had and that why 50% was what Honda was going to pay and the reason why Honda was going to pay that was because I had been such a good customer. He was taking to me like I should be glad that Honda was going to pay that amount. I told him that their was a recall on the transmission and that is why Honda extended the warranty to 109000. he stated that their had not been a recall on the transmission. I told him that was what ne of the servicemen had told me and thank him and hung up. I got my car repaired and paid 599.99 on May 23,2008.

Is anyone willing to be involved in a class action lawsuit against Honda for the 2002 accord? My transmission just went at 110,000. I have to spend 2,700 to fix it at AMCO. I today I talked to my Honda America case manager about the problem and was told, “We don’t care about customer service.” This was after I had told her (Lisa Praug) about my concerns. I told her how I know there were a recalls on 1999-2001 Honda accords for a transmission defect and that the 2002 is that same exact transmission and there is no recall. I then stated that since my car may have a defective transmission I hoped Honda would help with the cost and stand behind their car and customer service. Lisa then informed me “We don’t care about customer service.” We will review how many Hondas you have owned and how much work you have gotten done at the dealer and then we will decide how much we will help with the cost.

I’m so upset I am considering contacting the law firm that did the class action lawsuit for the 1999-2001 but before I do that I need to know how many people would be willing to support the effort.

Based on what I have seen on this website and based on what I am experiencing with my car and the issues surrounding several complaints regarding the transmissions, I sincerely believe that the Honda Dealers should do the right thing and go ahead and issue a recall for these ridiculously defected transmissions. I financed this vehichel a year and half ago and I am still paying on it, by the time I finish paying and fixing this damned car it will have cost me well over 30,000, it isn't even worth half of that. I am disgusted and disappointed with the way the Honda Company has handled this situation and others and I will never ever buy another Honda again in my life. I will most definitely not recommend them to friend and family either. Then they have the nerve to say they sell reliable cars, thats BS.

Wow! I can't believe that I am not the only one experiencing transmission problems at such an early mileage with a Honda Accord 02. My car began slipping (jerking) about a month ago. I took it to the shop three times to get it fixed. The first two times I took it to the shop, I had my torque converter clutch and linear solenoid replaced. Neither seemed to get rid of the jerking. So finally, Mr. Transmission (transmission shop) was able to diagnose that I needed my transmission rebuilt. I was slightly upset since I only have approximately 58,900 miles on my car. I thought that was rather early to have transmission problems. The good thing is, I purchased extended warranty. Also, the transmission work that Mr. Transmission did is warrantied. So if I run into any problems with it again, I am going to look into purchasing another vehicle. I will definitely be using this site before I purchase another vehicle.

I have a 2002 Honda accord which has started slipping and jerking. After stopping at the traffic light when I accelerate the car it has a hard time switching from first to second gear, and when it does it makes a loud noise and lurks forward.
Its very risky , I was about to hit somebody yesterday.

I read in one of the complaints that there is no difference in 2001 transmission , which is covered under extended warranty and 2002 model. so why this anomaly.I called the dealer and he looked by my VIN number iif there has been recall, but it came negative.

I dont wanna shell out $3K, its the inherent problem of Honda's transmission , they pay for 2001 should also pay for 2002. may be they haven't heard many complaints yet because 2002 is a year newer.

We should file a lawsuit , many of us can't afford $3K , please contact me at milan123in@yahoo.com.

I bought a brand new 2002 Honda Accord EX V4 and I had transmission problems in the first year. I took it to the dealer and was told repeatedly there's nothing wrong with it. When finally I had to do the maintenance requiring the change of the transmission fluid, the dealer's service department told me the transmission was almost gone, and that they only noticed the problem when changing the transmission fluid. The car had only 26000 miles, and they changed the transmission for free. However, they did not pay for the rental car I had to use. A few months later I began experiencing the same problems again with the transmission. The wheels spun when starting when the light turned green, jolts, sometimes strong enough to scare everybody in the car. For the past four years I went to the dealer's service department for the scheduled maintenance, and always asked to check the transmission, especially that I was afraid the car will be out of the warranty soon. I was told that my complaints were documented in their system and that Honda will fix them even though I might have some extra miles. Now I have 106000 miles on my car, and I went to a different Honda dealer service department to do the 105k miles service, that requires changing of the transmission fluid. The service department called me to let me know the transmission is gone. The fluid was black, they changed it and test drove the car, and when they checked the new fluid was black again. I called the original dealer's service department where I had all the work done all those years, and they told me that since the car is out of warranty I have to pay for the transmission, about $3500. I told them I had problems from the beginning, that I have been complaining about them for years, when the car was under warranty, and that they should have fixed it then. They said that there's nothing they can do. I called American Honda today, I told them that I made all the servicing on time and only at the Honda dealer, that the car had DOCUMENTED transmission problems from the beginning and that Honda should fix it. They gave me a case number, and told me a case manager will call me in a few days, but chances are they can't do anything at this point. In the meanwhile I am renting a car that I pay out of pocket, waiting for Honda case manager to call. I even thought to sell the car rather that spending thousands of dollars in repairs, but the Honda dealer told me they would not buy it or accept it as a trade in because it's not worth it!!! I bought a brand new Honda Accord 2002, spent thousand of dollars at the dealer with the scheduled maintenance, the transmission failed all the time, and the car did not last 6 years!!!!!!!
Where is the reliability Honda is supposedly famous for?????
Honda has transmission problems and they should stand by their product and they should extend the warranty on the 2002 as they did with the 2001.

Wow..........all my life i've watched everyone in their Hondas and i've always always wanted one...Ehem until..Ugh i hate this story so i bought my car 2002 Honda accord with 116000 miles on it from the dealership.Everything was fine for a little while.Except i kept getting these random calls to renew my warranty as well as trading my car back in? They wanted to buy my car back from me..Sounded kinda fishy but anyways in January i noticed a little slipping.didn't mind it at first but now im at 126000 8 months later and the d4 light is blinking tranny light is on and driving it is like driving without a clutch on a manual car..Its awful i had just got done with an interview with a good job went to head home..mind you it was rush hour and i had a 45 min trip ahead of me the car sounded like it was gonna blow up..Wouldn't take off really and i had to shift into 1st to get it going
Honda wants me to take it in if they don't take care of it im screwed!!!!

Accord LX V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 58,000 miles

To refresh your memory, Our transmission start slipping and shifting jerkily when our 2002 V6 Honda Accord had about 58,000 miles on it. It continued to get worse so we took it to our nearby Honda dealer who diagnosed the problem a as slipping clutch pack between second and third gears. They estimated that it would cost about $2950.00 to replace the transmission $1850.00 for parts and the balance for labor. Honda America offered no concession on 2002 Accords.

I called Honda America, and, who eventually offered a 25% reduction on the price. At this point, our transmission refused to go into fourth gear at all, making it difficult to drive on the freeway. I called Honda America and told them that a 25% discount was not enough of a reduction in the price of the repair on a low mileage car. After all, we did spend the extra money buying a Honda because of their reputation for dependability. They suggested that if I sent them all of our repair records, they MIGHT give us a greater concession.

We checked with some independent repair shops in the area about replacing the transmission. All of them told us that the best deal would be gotten at the dealer as they used factory reconditioned transmissions and gave 36 month 36,000 mile warranties. So, with the need to drive the car pressing, we took it to the Honda Dealer for repairs. When it was time to pick the car up, the repair department told us that they had billed Honda America in a way which would reduce our costs. In the end our bill for the transmission parts and labor was: $1113.00

We recommend that you pursue Honda vigorously to receive satisfaction. Also, we hope that a class action suit is brought on behalf of all of us with transmission problems

Good Luck,

My car has only 65,000 miles on it and the transmission is going???
How can this be possible??? I bought a Honda so I would never have a problem
like this. My case is currently under review through Honda Corp. They told me
I might be able to get a good will repair because it is no longer covered under
my warranty. I'm not sure if I'll have to pay any money towards the repair yet.
I'm hoping they will take care of everything. Wish me luck!
I'm very disappointed with Honda. I believe there should be a

I was told that Honda's were the best cars on the road. I got my license when I
turned 16 and I was lucky enough to have parents and grandparents buy me a
new 2002 Honda Accord SE. WOW!!!! my first car and it was brand new it had a
sunroof, alloy wheels, and it was the most beautiful shinny black color I had ever
seen. I loved my HONDA, I was always cleaning it and keeping it as nice as I could.
Everyone always told me how great it looked and how great I looked in it. I was
never going to get another car and this one would last me through college. Then at
95,000 miles the transmission started to slip from first gear to second gear and from
second gear into third gear. I took my car to the dealer and they said nothing was
wrong, I guess because I am a girl they think they can tell me anything. I told my
Dad and he took it to an ASE certified mechanic on transmission, etc. and he said it needed a new transmission. It will cost $1,800. to repair it. HONDA SHOULD
REPAIR IT AT NO COST TO ME!!!!!!! I got on the internet to find out about Honda
transmissions. I read about all the problems and complaints and I'm going to yell
to everyone about this problem. I was going to keep this car forever because I loved
it...HONDA SHOULD HAVE A RECALL!!!! Since I am commuting to college and
need a car I am driving my Dad's car - 1998 Toyota Avalon, 175,000 miles and it
has never had any problems. The timing belt was replaced at 100,000 miles. Dad
no longer commutes to his work ( 100 miles round trip ) each day. It is no wonder
why TOYOTA is the number one selling car. I just wish I had listened to Mom and
Dad, my sister, her boyfriend, my boyfriend, my grandparents, and other friends and
got a TOYOTA!!!!!!!!! Did I mention that I had done every scheduled maintenance at the
HONDA Dealer and they had extra suggested maintenance too. I really miss driving
my HONDA because it was so much fun to drive. Now I am stuck driving my Dad's
Toyota Avalon and it drives like an old BUICK. But, It keeps on going and going and
going like the Energizer Bunny...With my luck it will probably last another 175,000
miles. I miss my HONDA and HONDA CORP. should stand behind their product.

I made the mistake of not taking the car to the dealership when the transmission started to act up. I called Honda and they said they could do nothing since I took it to a third party. Interesting the Honda rep on the 1-800 number said that the transmission is only good for around 120000 miles- I sure thought that Honda's were better quality than that!

I am now in line with everyone else in this "Beef" on Honda Accord Transmissions.
I have a 2002 Honda Accord SE - I have had the transmission replaced 2x now &
only have 61k miles on it!! Cannot believe what I have been reading about this
issue! I like everyone else, assumed that Honda's were great cars - my family has
had them for years! My Dad and my Mother-in-Law both have 1992 Accords that are
still going with no major work like the transmission yet!
I purchased my car through a local dealer (not a Honda dealer) and thankfully, got
the extended warranty (CostGuard) thru 75k miles. The first replacement was
claimed thru CostGuard (Only had to pay for the freight charge to send to the Honda
dealer). The replacement transmission was worse than the original.
So - I called American Honda & told them what was going on. They replaced the
2nd one at no cost to me.
But - this 3rd one is kind of iffy.... I just don't have the patience, nor do I think we,
as Accord owners should have to suffer like this. Honda's are supposed to be
reliable transportation, but they are apparently loosing that ground quickly to
other makes! You would think, with the car sales hurting in our current, poor
economy, that Honda would want to remedy things by regaining their reputation!
But it sounds to me like they are heading in the direction of another class action
suit if they don't start pleasing us consumers!

I thought Honda Accords were reliable? Not only did the transmission start slipping, we also had to have the window motors replaced. The car is only 5 years old and it has had a few annoying problems. I am glad that the warranty still covered the transmission, but I would think that Honda wouldn't want to have faulty transmissions, period. My co-worker has the same exact car (year, trim, etc) and she had to replace her transmission as well. I have a 1998 Toyota Four Runner and I never had these problems.

The transmission started to shift roughly with some jerking prior to the 60,000 check. The mechanic said it felt fine. The car went to the dealer at approx 63,400 miles due to air bag light problem. They checked the transmission and stated "clutch packs are slipping for third gear". The transmission needs to be replaced, will cost approx $4,000.00. This is insane. Honda should admit that the 2002 Accord with a V-6 has the same flaw as the previous years, and pay for all needed repairs.

Owned a 1991 Accord that went to 300,000+ miles without a problem at all. Replaced with this 2002 that has only made it to 130,000 (almost all highway) miles and now needs a new transmission. Honda is offering to pay half. If they're paying half, then they know there's a problem, and I believe it's time for a class action lawsuit. Acknowledging blame and paying for half is an admission of a faulty product. I highly doubt that I'd buy another Honda--the independent transmission shop I spoke with said that Honda will not provide the tools for diagnostics, and it must be done at a certified Honda repair shop. Extremely disappointed in Honda with this problem with their "newer technology" and "much improved" transmission. So, looks like I'm $1400 out of pocket, on a $2800 repair bill with Honda picking up half. Having been in auto sales and service department business previously, I know that paying "half" is more like they'll still walk away with a profit on the deal, which is really unfair when we purchase products that should be tried and true, not having the customer doing research and development.

I need some help!

I have a 2002 Honda Accord. I have had no problems with my Accord and have done all of the regular maintenance from the beginning. However, about a month ago I took my car in for regular maintenance to get the timing belt, other belts, and water pump maintenance. I'm around 127,000 miles, so it was time. Up to that point, my car drove perfectly.

I plan to take my car back to the dealership, but I want to be knowledgeable about what's going on. Am I being taken for a ride?

Here's the exact time line:

Prior to 1/9/08: Car drove perfectly!

1/9/08 (126,576 miles): Took car to dealership for regular maintenance to have timing belt, water pump, drive belts, balancer belt, balancer shaft seal, and coolant replaced. Also, cleaned throttle plate and body as throttle had been sticking. Slipping transmission problem started on the next cold start when going from 1st to 2nd gear. However, didn't really know what the problem might be and thought it might be a fluke. I called some other mechanics and they couldn't imagine a transmission problem developing that quickly, as those types of problems usually developed over a long period of time.

1/22/08 (127,526 miles): Took car back to dealership. Told them how the car was acting on a cold start. They stated the fluid was dark and low. And that I needed to change the fluid and might have bigger issues with my transmission. However, they also stated they where unable to replicate the problem while my car was there all day long. The dealership told me it must have been coincidence that it started the same day they did the other service.

1/25/08 (127,698 miles): Took my car back to the dealership for the transmission fluid flush. Chose to use them because they were the only ones that used the Honda fluid and I did not want to create any other problems by using one of the other kinds. Got car back but still had problems feeling the transmission slip on cold starts.

2/1/08 to 2/8/08: Was out of town. Didn't drive car.

2/9/08: Noticed leak that was almost a foot in diameter. Originally thought it was an oil leak but when I took it to be checked by the people who do my oil changes, I found out it was a transmission fluid leak and that it had leaked almost half the fluid out. I did not have a fluid leak until I had the transmission flush on the 25th.

Help? Is this a little quick for such major transmission problems to develop? This started only a month ago and has went this far. The one thing that really bothers me is that my problems from above start each time I go to the dealership. But I can't pinpoint how this might be happening, since originally they did no work on the transmission.

Will guys here's a follow up to my story (#47). I went to Honda Dealership in North Richland HIlls, TX a suburb of Fort Worth and they told me........I needed a new transmission. I called Honda Accord and they gave me a case number and told me someone ( a case manager) will call me back next week to see what they can do. My car is 23,000 out of warranty wiht 123,000 miles on it.
The guy at the dealership says the transmission will cost around $3000 to replace but he has contacted Honda as well about my car and they told him they'll make a decision on it next week. The service guy told me Honda usually want you to split the cost or put something towards repairs and he asked me how much could I do? I told him at the most $1000 towards it. This is really turning out to be expensive so I am waiting to hear back from Honda Care. In the meantime my aunt and husband owns a transmission shop so I am taking the car to them to look at as well. The Honda Dealership told me they didnt do rebuilt transmission and that they only do new transmission. I am really disappointed with my Accord needing a major repair. My 1996 Accord LX had about 200,000 miles on it and I never had a problem with it. I dont think I'll ever buy an Honda again. I am really looking at the Mazadas.

I took this car to the dealer who did not want to do a full transmission check because it is a lot of work and instead told me to get a transmission flush. I got the transmission flush and they drove the car to check if it was slipping. They said they could not detect any slipping. So why is it then when I drove the car afterwards it was still slipping?

I believe this is dangerous as I'm afraid of getting rear ended or getting hit when I try to make a left turn. But I guess I have to wait until I get hit before my insurance can sue Honda.

I am a pilot, I get paid to notice engines that are going before they really go. I am extremely disappointed right now, feeling my 2002 Accord's transmission slip and then jerk in all gears but especially between first and second (it may just be that a sharper jerk at the lower speeds). Went to dealer, said he couldn't duplicate it. Took ride with lead mechanic who said he didn't notice anything. I can feel it slipping, he supposedly cannot. This is total bullsh--t or total incompetence, take your pick. The former more likely. I am monitoring the situation, waiting for it to go/break something more noticeable. I need help here, will a formal diagnosis help? How do I get this irresponsible company to repair my car? OBTW, do not recommend Honda products to ANYONE.

I bought my 2002 the first week they hit the lot. Mine was practically the first one on the dealer lot. Well the transmission started taking a long time to shift from 2 to 3rd gear. Then last week the check engine light came on and I took it to the dealer...You need a new transmission = $2800. The dealer offered a $400 discount.. After I came home I found this website where everyone is stating the same problem. I called Honda and they said the transmission warranty that was extended was only for 00-01 cars, not 2002. Yet they are looking into a Goodwill repair. Wish me luck. E-mail me with any advice.

I wished I would have found this site when I bought my 2002 Honda SE back in March of 05. I bought it used (Certified Honda) with about 43,000 miles on it from a Honda dealership in Arlington, Texas. I havent had any major problems with it accept my sunroof doesnt open but just tilts. I have about 122,000 miles on my car now, but anyways about 3-4 months ago I noticed my car seems to hesitate a second or so when I am pulling off from the stop position. It seems that it hesitates going from 1st to 2nd gear. Once it gets to second gear the car runs smooth until I have to stop again. Sometimes it takes off from stop just fine but the problem with the hesitating and moderate jerking sometimes to happen about 90% of the time.

I read most of you all comments and am afraid now that I may have to use my upcoming tax return to get my transmission fix. Whats puzzling is that the car drives fine accept when I talking off from a dead stop and they you get the revving, hesitation, and jerk when taking off from 1st to 2nd gear. I called several dealership and the first two claim they never heard of problems with the 98-2002 Honda Accord models. The 3rd dealership parts department guy told me upfront that it sounds like my transmission is going out. Im hoping that my car holds up until I can get my tax returns in next 3 weeks, because its the only car I have with 3 kids and wife and I dont have the money in my savings to pay for any repairs without getting help from my tax returns. If it turns out its something more then just some part on the transmission needing to be replace, Im never going to buy a Honda again. I love Honda and brag on their reliability; as a matter of fact my wife is looking into getting a 2008 CRV. If theres a problem with my 02 Accord transmission mission and Honda doesnt pay for half the cost because my car is out of warranty, Im dropping Honda and will by the 2008 Chevy Malibu.
