This crack started and finished in one day. I tried to glue it, but the crack would open and close depending on the temperature of the day, so glue wouldn't hold. My vehicle is no longer under warranty. I may be able to find a replacement at the junkyard. With so many complaints about it, Ford should replace it.

I just discovered a 1/8th inch split from top to bottom in the center of the panel below my back window. It wasn't there yesterday and I haven't used the window hatch lately so it can't be from closing it too hard. It's about -20 degrees C (-4 F) with the wind chill so I was wondering if it could be due to the sudden temperature change from a garage to outside.
I see from other comments re this problem that Ford refuses to acknowledge that this is an issue. I really like this vehicle, but this is the third issue that has really pissed me off. The reverse sensors stopped working and I'm told it will cost big $ to follow the wires looking for the problem. I've also just had the third set of brakes (top of the line ceramics) installed which seems a bit much for 110,000 km's.
We have to replace my wife's car very soon, but I'm not too interested in another Ford.

I bought my Ford Explorer from a car lot in Eden, NC in February 2008. I've already had to put a wheel barren on it and also about a month ago I went to the back of my car just to find a cracked panel and that really pissed me off. I bought a lemon before from another dealer in Reidsville, NC and I didn't expect to buy a lemon from a well known car dealership. You would think you can trust the car dealerships when purchasing a car but I guess not since now a days people are only out to get what they can get out of you. They just want the money and truly the way that the auto market is they can loose business.

I JUST BOUGHT this Explorer used.. I have not even had it for a month yet. I had read about the crack "buttcrack" and it just happened to me today. I called Ford customer service who told me that it was not under warranty, it was not a safety recall -- so there was nothing that they would do about it.
I knew that this was a potential issue on these vehicles when I bought it, but I am still upset that ford will not stand behind these repairs considering that it is an obvious manufacturer defect.
If Ford doesn't do anything to help me out with this, this vehicle will be my last Ford... and I am a young buyer. Ford, do you really want to piss off your young future buyers?

I was very upset when we went to go away and noticed the huge crack below the back window. The car had not been moved the day before so it had to happen while sitting under the carport overnight. I am planning on contacting the Ford dealer in town to see what if anything they will do. I don't have much confidence in dealerships when something like this happens. I came out from the house to go to work, and there it was a crack from above the Ford emblem down below it. No one had hit my hard, ect. It just appeared. I have kept the car in clean condition and even covered at times, so I am frustrated that it would just appear, the dealers are stating that there is a complaint but not a recall. That it is not covered under warranty. I purchased the car 3 years ago. I need any help I can to get this replaced, and I should not have to pay for something I did not do to the car.

Same isue as many with the rear hatch cracking after a few years, this is a factory defect with almost all folks having to pay for this.
I just took my Explorer to the dealer and showed the issue and the service manager here in Livermore California knew of the issue. Happy to say that I just received the vehicle back with the plastic piece replaced free of charge.
However, I was prepared for a mini war with Ford and armed with a TSB from Ford mentioning that they will replace this issue free of charge. Many people here in this forum are working with dealers who just don't want to help as they all have a slush fund from Ford that can take care of this free.
Feel free in emailing me as I would be happy to send you the PDF file with TSB.

Hope this helps.

OK, so Ford fixed it. I only had the car for less than 4 months but it took several weeks for the replacement part to come in. Was it fixed? No...it didn't crack again, but the panel won't stayed glued in place. It has been re-glued by Ford numerous times and of course as soon as the warranty was up Ford, said "too bad". This is an on-going problem that I should not have to pay for.
This car has been nothing but trouble since I bought it. I have had wheel bearings replaced numerous times. I am also on my 3rd set of brakes...my last explorer had almost 90,000 miles on it before it needed brakes. This one needed the first set at 55,000.

Explorer has been garage kept and maintained excellent with wax. Paid for the Premium Warranty and Ford states this problem is not covered - states it is considered a piece of Molding. If Ford opts not to fix this problem - which lowers the resale value due to their design flaw - I will personally see to it that My or any of my extended family never buys a Ford Product again. I will also have my input as a fleet manager to stay clear of Ford. I have had a great report with Ford until this happened. Ford needs to step up and fix this problem and not expect the consumer to pay for their flaw.

We woke up one morning and found that the tailgate panel had a vertical crack that ran from top to bottom. We have never had an accident in the car and the car does not experience temperature extremes. It seems that at least 1 of every 3 Explorers of this body style that we see on the freeway have the same problem. The Ford dealer told us that it has not been recalled and that it will cost $250-300 to fix. This is clearly a widespread problem that Ford has implicitly acknowledged by changing the body style in later model years. I plan to call customer service (800-392-3673) and make them pay for at least a portion of the repair (a strategy that has worked in the past). If you have this problem you should call in and make them suffer for manufacturing a defective product!

Today I spoke with Ford of Canada Customer service (1-800-565-3673). I indicated my vehicle had a crack in the panel that contained the Ford logo, about 2 inches to the right of the logo, that extended from the top of the panel to the bottom. They indicated they had zero interest in me if I was not under the distance or time warranty. Like many others, my Explorer was parked in the garage when this happened. One evening we just came out and there it was. The representative on the phone indicated she'd never heard of this issue before, WHICH was in contrast to the Ford Repairman I spoke to in December who said every other Explorer they see has the same problem.
I asked if they cared about Ford drivers and the only answer they gave was that I was not covered by the warranty.
I love my truck but this is ridiculous.

Panel "appliqué as Ford calls it" just below rear tailgate window just cracked. It was approximately 20 deg. F. when it happened. I was helping my wife unload groceries from the vehicle and when we closed the tailgate the crack appeared just to the left of the "Ford" emblem. Since then I've been looking at other Ford Explorers in our area and have seen this same kind of crack on approx 5-10% of the time on Explorers with the same design. Contacted my dealer (Grand Prairie Ford) and talked to the service adviser. I went to the dealer for a oil change and mentioned the sudden appearance of a crack in the rear lift gate. There was another gentleman at the dealership with the exact same problem. We tried to appeal to the service manager for a fair remedy to what is obviously a design problem and Ford could have cared less. They told me the vehicle is out of warranty and there is no recall. The people at Malouf Ford in North Brunswick NJ said since there is no recall, it would cost ME $800 to fix this problem.
I called Ford Customer Service and they said there is nothing they can do. I asked what has to happen to get a recall and they said it's up to THE NATIONAL TRAFFIC & SAFETY ASSOCIATION. So I hope others will join me and contact this association ( I plan to google to find the contact information) and let's try to get this issue resolved. We should not have to pay for what is obviously a design flaw.
The gentleman in the dealership who has the same problem with the cracked lift gate, said he has done research and FORD DID RECALL CERTAIN EXPLORERS FOR THIS PROBLEM BUT ONLY VEHICLES WITH CERTAIN VIN NUMBERS BUILT AT A CERTAIN PLANT. This crack occurred by itself and I had not even used the hatch. Now I noticed that the crack has spread below the Ford emblem as well. We have had issues with the mechanics in the dealership we purchased the car trying to advise that things needed to be fixed that did not, but had not had issues with the vehicle itself. We are planning to go to the dealership (knowing it is a waste of time) and will call the Ford Customer Service number listed. A class action suit is a good idea - I will not buy another Ford product if they do not stand behind this problem. We recently purchased a 2007 Honda because we are fed up with the American automakers complaining about not buying American. We always had in the past and look where we are with this vehicle! Ford customer service was not helpful. The dealer said that the cracked panel is plastic applied with double sided tape! It only costs $70 for a new panel, but $200 for painting. Since then I have spoken again to Ford and they have admitted that it's a problem and they will fix it, if I pay $100 deductible. What a ripe off? Why should we pay a cent for a manufacturer defect? Some one had suggested a class action. I think that's a great idea..I'm in!!

I had the same crack occur last January that 93 others have mentioned here. It happened on a day that was around 5 degrees outside. I was parked in a lot and when I came outside after two hours, the crack was there. Funny thing is that I met a guy three years earlier who was driving an '02 Explorer. I asked him how he liked the car and his only complaint was that he cracked his lift gate plastic trim panel when he slammed it too hard. I bought my Explorer soon after and made sure EVERY time I closed the glass that I didn't do it too hard. This happened all by itself. They really have to step up and replace these when they fail, for FREE. It is a bad advertisement for Ford when there is an ugly crack right next to their logo!
I called the customer service number today and registered my complaint. I'm not holding my breath...

Who would like to join me in a class action? I am contacting the BBB, as well as posting a sign on the back of my car. Ford should be held accountable for their workmanship, not the consumer who pays their bills.

Just checked the web to see if anyone else had this happen to them and was shocked at how many others have the same problem (and these are the people who are taking the time to go online to gripe - I'm sure there are countless more who just haven't complained online).
Mine has been slowly cracking for quite a while. In fact, at first I thought it was just a crack that had always been there - it was just a hairline crack between the window and the Ford emblem. I'm not sure when it really started cracking. It was after my warranty expired that my dad pointed it out to me - he has a 2002 Explorer and doesn't have this crack.
In the last few weeks, the hairline crack has gone all the way down the rest of the panel and looks like the Grand Canyon on the back of my car. What a piece of junk!
I called my dealership (didn't bother stopping by because I knew the answer to my question) and they stated that it wasn't a recall item and I'd have to pay for it. I have a call into Ford Customer Care and have been told I'll hear back from someone this afternoon. Sure. I'm holding my breath.
I should add that I also have had the finish on the black trim between the windows peeling off and the recirculation door arm (shifts air between heat and A/C) broke off. Between these 3 things, I'd have to say this car is a piece of junk.
I replaced a 1994 Explorer with the 2003 Explorer. The 1994 was well-built and rarely had a problem. Gosh, I almost miss it!
I'm thinking of selling this old heap and getting a nice, well-built, foreign SUV.

The back panel below the window on the liftgate cracked this August (2007). It was just sitting in the driveway. I haven't contacted anyone yet but reading all the complaints about the same problem I think Ford should consider a recall. Why should the customer have to pay for the company's defect? I have owned Ford products for years and years but seeing all the problems listed and nothing being done by the company I may consider looking elsewhere!

I called Bell Ford dealer in NJ where I live and they didn't say much to help me. I also drove a blue explorer from Loman Ford on Rte. 1 which had the same problem which they tried to sell to me. I asked them about the cracked panel and got no answer. If there is a problem or a defect we the consumers should have no problem being taken care of or maybe that's it we're just being taken. And Ford is wondering why their consumers are going elsewhere!

A few weeks ago the infamous crack appeared on my liftgate. I had already assumed that Ford would not repair it based on the information here. On 10/4/07, while waiting at a light, I hear an explosion. The window on the rear liftgate exploded/imploded. I talk to Ford and they tell me my car is not part of any recalls so I am responsible for the repairs. Now I know why foreign cars are outselling US cars...because US cars suck. Definitely won't be buying another Ford. My sister has a 2002 explorer and the rear liftgate window has shattered twice when closing.

For no apparent reason the "plastic" rear panel below the window lift gate cracked. When first noticed the crack was 2" long. The next day the crack was completely through the panel. Neither the door or window lift section has never been slammed or abused. The Explorer has 41250 miles is always garaged and in immaculate condition. I also have a 2nd 2003 Eddie Bauer Explorer that I bought for my daughter. Both Explorers are "twins" with identical equipment except for the color. The "plastic" rear panel on her Explorer is OK.

The dealership told me to take the car in when I called to complain about the cracked panel. Once there, I was told Ford would not pay for it because they were only paying certain VIN numbers & my car didn't qualify even though I had the extended warranty. They offered to repair the panel & I was to pay 25% of the bill. I was quoted about $100 out of pocket for the repair. When I picked up my car, I accidentally saw the bill which was a total of $327.19 & they had the nerve to charge me $216. I contested their math calculations but they told me to pay or they would not release the vehicle. After I payed, I noticed that my full size spare tire was missing! Thieves, thieves, thieves.

I also have a cracked rear panel. It's right in the middle of the rear door--next to the Ford emblem. I personally know two other people who also have cracks. One of them was able to buy the part and have it fixed by a friend--she said it was $140-160 dollars just for the part. I figure that it is a faulty part and refuse to pay any more money to put in a part that could very well crack again. I will replace it when I am ready to sell the stupid car and I hope that is soon. I will never buy a Ford again.

Same story as the others on this site.... cracked on a cold winter day while sitting in a parking lot. Didn't even have to open/close the rear window to do it. We've had this vehicle since new in 2003 and its the first vehicle my wife loved enough to actually take good care of it. She still won't let me sell it even after all of this.
In January '07, I took it to Winner Ford (Newark, DE), the dealer that sold me the Explorer when it was new. They quoted $345.75 and said since I was out of warranty and there was no recall, I would bear the cost.
I contacted the Ford Customer Relationship Center. They blew me off a day later. Then I wrote a polite letter (not email) to the CRC, to Ford's general office address in Detroit, and sent a copy of my letter to Winner Ford. I thought a three pronged stick might get someone's attention. I included pictures and printouts from this web site showing how many of us have the same problem.
Within two days of mailing the letter, Winner Ford contacted me and told me that I am a valuable customer, they appreciated the way I presented my case and they were going to cover the cost and try to get compensation from Ford.
One day after Winner called, a representative from Ford's Detroit office called inquiring about my letter and problem. I told her that Winner was stepping up and gave her Winner's contact information. She called me back again two days later to be sure I was satisfied.
At about the same time, the CRC sent me another form letter blowing me off again. They don't even mention the specific problem I complained about, just a non-specific "we reviewed your claim and feel we were correct in denying it blah, blah, blah".
In summary, I will probably be buying as many cars as I can in the future from Winner. That dealership sells several different brands, so a Toyota, Saturn, or some other brand might be in my future. I believe Ford was going to step up. It sounded to me like she was going to tell me that they were going to come through. The Ford CRC center seems terrible to me. Yes, I am probably biased because they denied my claim, but in my opinion they did not ever seriously consider my claim. I felt totally blown off. I have the mailing addresses I used if anyone is interested, but I got them right off the Ford website.

The vehicle was not even being driven and was parked inside the garage when the cracked rear panel on the liftgate took place. My husband called to tell me what had happened and I began writing down the license plate number of several other vehicles with the identical problem. We took it to our local dealer, Dick Masheter, who told us that the problem was normal and expected. This is not normal, expected, or acceptable. My family has had many of these vehicles and this has never happened. Ford needs to redesign to resolve this issue -- in addition to paying for the repair.

The first time this happened, the dealer replaced the part for free while they were changing the defective hinge (recalled item). Now that the base warranty has expired, they refuse to cover the cost of the second crack under the extended warranty. What are the odds that they replaced the first defective part with a second defective part? Incidentally, half the panel fell off after a trip through a TOUCH-FREE car wash!!!

I have 43,000 miles on my Explorer and just had the panel crack last week. I called the dealer who had me bring it in for him to look at. He said he has seen one other like it. Since I am past warranty he said he would have to get back to me in a couple of days. He called me back and referred me to the Ford customer service number: 1-800-392-3673. I called last Friday to see if they would do anything about it. The representative I spoke to said that they have been getting a lot of complaints, but have had no recall yet. She called me back today to let me know she was still looking for an answer to see if they would fix it. In the meantime, she said the more people that call and lodge a complaint, the more likely they are to issue a recall. If you have this problem, I urge you to call. I use that door a lot and expect quality from Ford. This is just one more problem, along with the passenger windows that sometimes don't roll down, that I have had with this car.

I had the same cracked panel below the rear windshield. It started right above the Ford emblem and moved all the way down the panel, and it happened shortly after my warranty period ended. I read about some of the other issues with this and I figured that going to the dealer wouldn't help the situation too much. Luckily, a friend of mind is a mechanic and he was able to get the part at cost: $70. The problem was that it only comes in primer grey. I had to buy Ford paint, and he had another friend of his paint it for me. The paint itself was $60. We just replaced it this past weekend. We had to pull the old one off with the help of a heat gun and glue the new one onto the glass/metal frame. The actual glass goes all the way down to the end of the door. This plastic panel covers the glass along with a metal support. I was worried about leaking but after seeing the interior of this panel, you don't have to worry about that. I really don't know how it cracked, since it is glued fairly solidly onto the metal frame (unless the metal frame twists and/or flexes with use). I now try to lift up the entire tailgate when I need to get access to the back instead of using the small window/liftgate. It was a pain to change, but at least now my Explorer looks decent again. The part should be made of sheetmetal. It doesn't make sense to have a plastic part which can break. I expect to have to replace it again in the future, so I'm holding onto the rest of the paint!

I returned back to my 2003 Explorer after being gone for a few days and discovered two cracks in the panel under the rear window. I thought that someone vandalized the car by hitting the Ford emblem on the back panel.
When I went to the Ford dealer for an estimate, ($366.00), I was told that this is a fairly common problem on Explorers and Mountaineers of this year. I would say that this should be covered by Ford as it is clearly a design flaw that prevents dissimilar materials to expand and contract at their own rate.

This panel cracked on a cold night (15 deg. F) with the car just sitting in the driveway. From what I have seen and read it sounds like a design flaw with the fact that a plastic part is epoxied to a metal part with a different coefficient of expansion. With the age of the car, it's out of warranty so I have to suffer to cost of repair (to bad it wasn't bolted on, I could get one at a salvage yard).
