My second and last explorer. Bought used with only 28000 miles. All 4 wheel bearings shot before 81500 miles. The tailgate panel below the rear window cracked 3 months after I bought it. Rear emergency brake pads are shot and I never use e-brake. My first explorer (1998) got a whole new motor at 75000 miles. The crank shaft broke in half 2 inches into the front of the motor. Then it was time for a new transmission at 100000. Ford...........Im done with you!!!!!!!

We had a noise and I wasn't sure exactly what it was. Eventually it sounded like we were dragging a box under the car! I called our local Wal-Mart in Bellevue, NE. They said to bring it over. At this point, I was 30 miles from home and going about 30 mph, SCARED! I got there and the first thing the yahoo told me was that they only do oil and tires!!! GRRR! I took it to a local Bellevue, NE Tires Plus that happened to be open on a Sunday. They put it on the hoist and determined it was the wheel bearing. They rocked the rear driver's tire from side to side. They were willing to do the repairs, but only Ford was authorized to do it, fee free. They had it towed to the local Ford dealer in Iowa. Cost was about $550. The first of 3...

well where do i start? I know never buy a fors. This car has a been a pain in the ass. I don't know why they don't just stop making them. I have had so many issues with this car i don't know where to begin. Lets start with the trans mission the car only had 60000 miles pn it when i had to pay 3000 dollars to have the transmission replaced. while it was in the shop ford informed me that all four of my wheel bearings needed to be replaced. One night my rear brake lights came on and would not go off and that cost me almost 300 dollars ti replace that. oh and did i forget to mention that replacing each bearing was around 400 a piece. OH and after all of that now i need an ball joint on the right front. It just seems like there is no end to the repairs that you have to make on these cars. You may as well buy a new car because thats just what u are doing any ways by the time you replace all of these parts on these cars, and after all of that they don't even hold value. Like i said in the beginning i will NEVER buy another ford or any product built by ford in my life.

Well, two wheel bearing down the road, and now the third one goes out, not too long after the second one. This time it was the passenger rear, previous it was the drivers front, with the driver's rear the first to go. Date and mileage are approximate, but close.

At 133,000 km (last week) heard a whining sound in the rear end. Both wheel bearings were near complete failure. Mechanic described that both rear bearings were not in good shape and nearly ceased. He said on the test drive that he heard a noise from the front end and sure enough this week the noise in the front is increasing exactly the same as the rear. What a mess!! Built in failure and my Ford representative will be hearing from me.

First, it was the REAR passenger side, I thought, o.k., I can deal with that, then I found out it's a two-piece press deal, so whatever, I still did it. Yep, sucked. That was this last spring. Well, I just my weekend replacing the fu@*&%$ drivers side....and wait it's better, right, so I get it done, take the damn thing for a drive, still making noise, but it sounds different....I go back home, look for dynamite, can't find any, but there was my jack, lifted the front end, the damn drivers front is out!!!!!!!! Unbelievable... when I read these I just want to cry! I've only done one wheel bearing/hub. Now I know the other three are just time bombs. $#*%. I've also had the cracked trunk door thing AND the very prevalent airbag problem. (The cable under the driver's seat is too short and disconnects your airbag.) Wow, I wonder what would have happened if my wheel would have fallen right off on the highway AND THEN the airbags wouldn't have even deployed when I crashed. I bought this car for my kids and I as a safe SUV... what crap. I can't wait until I get to fix the transmission. I did complain to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) though. Maybe Ford will have to make this right with all of us evnetually.... you know before we die or can't afford to drive these studip explorers anymore.

A year ago I had the right rear hub bearing replaced. It was shaking REALLY bad while on the highway. A few weeks ago I replaced the left rear bearing since that was also going bad. The mechanic told me my right front bearings were going bad also since the the grinding in the pedal didn't go away. Well I replaced that today. The grinding feel in the pedal is just about gone but now he tells me the right rear may be going bad again. The mechanics that worked on it (Midas) might have put cheap bearings in it. Since I do a lot of highway driving that wore it out quicker. Personally I don't think it's the bearing. It can't be. Ford sucks. I need to sell this car.

Bought this car new, now that the warranty is up so are the rear wheel bearings. Had both of them go out and $1,000 later, I'm wondering how long the front ones will last. I have been a loyal Ford customer and was planning on trading this one for another Ford. But now I'm not so sure. I have only had to replace wheel bearings on one other car and that was my 89 Mercury Tracer at over 200,000 miles. Any car should be able to go over 100k without replacing wheel bearings. I don't understand why this is not the subject of a recall. Does somebody have to get killed by the wheel flying off at speed to get Ford to fix this? I see this is a problem that seems to be limited to the 2002 model, so Ford figured out there was a problem. So Ford if your reading this, what is more important, not paying for my repair or not having me as a return customer? Gee I wonder how long my transmission will last?

as of yet I haven't had to change any wheel bearing in my explorer and I can't believe the outrageous prices you pay to have one replaced .I just did one yesterday and the bill was 120 for the part and 90.00 labor next time l will charge 60.00 more on the labor . The bearing list for 101.00 at the dealer.Well i change wheel bearings on just about everything on the road I have seen Pontiac's that have had to have bearings replace more than once / hub type. alot of pressed in bearings are installed improperly and fail to soon due to the install job and buying a cheap bearing like your chain stores like to sell. Its funny to see people get upset about a wheel bearing ,if you own any gm vehicles you should be complaining about intake gaskets leaking .Everyone of them leaks and some destroy the motor and gm won't warranty them repairs either.Find a repair shop that doesn't try to make a living off of your work.No matter what brand of vehicle you own you will have to work on it Chevy trucks eat transmissions and fuel pumps like there going out of style.

As unhappy as I've been with this vehicle, I wasn't that upset at first when I realized my rear drivers wheel bearing went bad. But I should've known better! Wheel bearings do fail eventually-right? Sure, but once again Ford has accomplished re-engineering simple designs into major cluster-ducks! I was first surprised at the price from Auto Zone, about $200 bucks. Then I was wondering why the hub was included. Found out pretty quick that this bearing has to be pressed twice, once into hub and once into (not sure of name) the knuckle. Okay I wasn't super happy, but went about the job. I soon found out why the hub is included. I had to use a cutting torch to remove the bearing from the hub, which completely destroyed the hub. Once again Ford has taken what used to be a simple job and turned it into a disaster. Last Ford I will ever own-and that's a promise. Now I have 3 more wheel bearings to deal with. I just need this vehicle to last about another year or two, but not sure I can wait.

I don't think this problem makes the vehicle a lemon, however, the total of all failures definitely. Here is what happened: I bought the car with already 109k miles. Beside the rattling brakes and the unreasonable consumption there was not much to complain. It changed soon. To explain all the details would miss the topic. A week ago my wife called me for some noises from the rear of the car. Before we even could finish talking the rear bearing was broken entirely. Thanks God she did not drive with interstate speed. 730 $ and several days later the problem was fixed.
No good car.

Front wheel bearings started making loud whining noises so instead of waiting for the wheels to fall off I opted to spend the $500 to change them out. Just another expense in the long list of failures this car has had. Now the rear ones are making the same noise. They're next....then I'm sure the transmission will go out. It's clunking from reverse to drive now and won't go back into park until it clunks back into reverse first. I had to have the rear differential replaced under warranty at 20,000 miles. The vehicle was making popping sounds while turning at first then all of the time - I got lucky on that large expense. I've had the rear cracked panel like everyone else and the bubbling paint on the hood and the POS 5 disk changer.

I purchased a 2002 Explorer from a friend in 2005 with just under 80k miles. She had replaced one or both of the rear wheel bearings and had JUST replaced a front wheel bearing. I should've known better...... The vehicle has turned out to be a lemon after this was the ONLY major problem she experienced. I had to replace the rear passenger side wheel bearing after about a year and the rear tie rods around the same time. About six months ago I had to replace the rear differential and THEN I just had to replace the rear driver side wheel bearing. I'm ready to just hit a deer and end the misery because I'm sure the next problem will be a front wheel bearing.

took this vehicle for 15 minute test drive, purchased it, hit the highway to bring it home, & heard the bearing noise for the 1st time. We have NO idea how we missed this sound on the test drive! Dealer made repair at zero cost to us, as it should be.
Now, 2 years later, the other side has gone out. Considered doing repair at home (husband is a machinist), but decided to have it done in a shop.
So, rear passenger wheel bearing at 60,000 miles. Rear driver side at 98,000 miles.
The 1st repair surprised us, the 2nd we expected due to history & high mileage.

I had just gotten my car inspected, it passed. Two weeks later I heard a grinding, crunching noise that sounded like an airplane landing above me. It only made the noise when you accelerate. Took it to the shop and found out that the bearings were grinded down to nothing. I had no choice but to get them replaced right there which ended up costing me 450.00. That was the rear driver's side. The very next day I heard the exact grinding again, only it was under my feet. I took it to the shop again and they tell me that it's now the front driver's side. I don't have another 450.00 just lying around so my car is just sitting while I pay a carnote, and car insurance for a car I can't drive. THANKS FORD, I KNOW WHAT NOT TO BUY NEXT TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!

This really sucks. This is the vehicle I really wanted (against my husbands better judgment). I bought it used 2 1/2 years ago. No problems...Till now. My husband got it to the garage this morning, he said it was smoking and the rear passenger wheel tilted to the side when he stopped. NOT GOOD. Well we have no idea what it is going to cost to fix, he gave the mechanic $500 to start. I am so not impressed. I still am paying on this vehicle. I did not get an extended warranty. Ford really should do a recall on this problem, because apparently from all the other comments within the past year this really IS a problem. I am driving my husbands "spare" summer vehicle now, a 1993 Dodge Ram, that runs like a top, and is really not attractive, it isn't my black Explorer. Did I mention I was not impressed. Ford really needs to start paying attention to these complaints and start making us satisfied Ford customers.

2002 Ford Explorer XLS was purchased for my son to commute to and from Oswego College, a distance of 30 miles each way. With the exception of routine maintenance( I do all of my own maintenance) this truck was relatively problem free. It was purchased with 35,000 miles on it and had a defective rear abs sensor and warped rotors replaced under warranty. My son graduated last year and landed a pretty job that he again commutes about 30 miles each way daily. March of 2008 all hell breaks loose; rear wheel bearing goes crazy basically overnight. The right rear wheel damn near fell off!! The damage was so severe we had to replace the rear steering knuckle; tore the bearing seat totally out. along with the steering knuckle we had to replace the rear half-shaft and the entire brake/parking brake assembly. Have a great local young mechanic who repaired this damage and also replaced the right side while it was on the lift. I was a little upset but figured 83,000 miles in Central New York winters anything can happen.

This is my third Explorer... Never had any serious problems of this kind before. Was experiencing some grinding sounds on braking. Took it in and found out two bearings were basically shot as well as other brake parts in the front and rear. Engine light was on because of the stupid vapor sensor issue and to renew my registration I had to get that fixed to pass emissions. Sank $1500 bucks into this POS expecting things to be better. The service invoice was three pages long. Since then both lighter jacks have failed, (replacing fuse does nothing) door open light won't go off half the time, and I am hearing a slow whumping noise at speeds over 50 when I brake or coast and the car shudders slightly. Only happens once in a while, but it seems to be getting worse and it didn't even happen before I brought the car in. At first I thought it was just the new pads rubbing, but now I have no idea. More bad bearings? My airbag light also flashes as something is wrong with the passenger seat-belt sensor. I have taken excellent care of this vehicle but I am doubting it will make 100,000 miles without another major overhaul. I had a '92 Expo that I put 175,000 miles on with only minor issues.

wheel bearing failure

Complaint Photos

I wish I found this site BEFORE I started to hear the noise that sounded like I needed a brake job! What started out as a low growl/rumble (I thought it was my tires) turned into to squealing that you hear when the disc brake pads are worn. I let it go....no grinding. Then I got the grinding., crunching, grabbing. Thinking I needed pads (4 wheel disc brakes) or shoes (parking brakes are shoes INSIDE the drum/discs) I bought both and made it my Memorial Day project. What a disaster! The moment I jacked the truck up I knew it was more serious...the wheel was sooooooooooo sloppy....Knowing nothing was open to buy parts I threw it back together and since I "disturbed" everything it got worse so I parked it for the day. Overnight I did research and found this site and discovered it is a VERY popular problem. Seeing the cost of repairs at 500 to 700 dollars at a shop compared to 200 do-it-yourself I figured I'd go DIY out of spite. I wouldn't let Ford make another penny from me. I also recommend to anyone NOT to replace this part with another part from Ford...it will just fail again because the part has not been improved. I paid 120 for the bearing and hub (AdvanceAuto) , 20 for a "24 breaker bar, 20 for a 35mm socket, 21 for a axle / hub puller (AutoZone) , and 50 for a machine shop to press out/in the bearing. Oh yeah.......4 bucks for GOJO.

2002 Ford Explorer XLS with 93k miles. Loud roaring at 55MPH. Took into the dealership where i purchased the vehicle new, they said all 4 wheel bearings and hubs need replaced, $1600, plus the rear differential is grinding and going bad, and the rear springs are snapped. nice, $4000 of repairs on a vehicle with a KBB trade in of $4700. What to do...... The repair shop guy was very nice, and i think, very honestly recommended I trade the vehicle in. I am guessing that he has seen this happen many times and knows that it is the beginning of many paychecks being dumped into the car. not sure what i am going to do, really tempted to cut my losses now, trade it in for the $2k they will give me, and get different make. After taking it to a smaller mechanic I was told it was a rear wheel baron but they could not work on it do to it using a special tool. After being recommended to take it to the dealer they in turn told me that in fact the baron was bad but it may also be the rear end. third is the rear driver side, witch I don't know how much will be. The truck is in the

2002 Ford explorer XLT.At 1000 miles, returned to ford to install / tightened missing engine hardware (exhaust manifold nuts 2.ea./ engine mount bolts) - Dealer service manager smile on comment that car was made on a Monday...At 5k, returned to dealer to replace alternator, belts and idler bearing. At 10k, returned to dealer again for horrible gas mileage (12 mpg), dealer "reprogrammed" eng management computer- no effect. Se vice manager blames EPA for mileage overinflated mileage rating. At 10.5K, insisted on having the dealer do a wheel alignment- way out of spec- mileage improved. This must be due to car made on a Monday, Ford worker was probably having a hang over or must be on something. I'm wondering if Ford conduct drug test on their employees? At 40k miles, had to replace both rear wheel bearing and hub assy. At 50k, car was dangerous, had to replace all 4 shocks, all 4 brake pads/rotor. also at this mileage, the rear ac control went wacko. system condemned- don't have the time to tear the system apart and replace vlv actuators. At 60k, check engine light on, replaced DPSE sensor and EGR control solenoid. At 85k, rear wheel bearing howling again. fyi... wifes car, garage daily, driven and taken cared of better than husband. Husband fixes jets for a living, so all repairs was done in house with dealer supplied "OEM" Ford certified parts. Tried to have dealers fix issues, very expensive. Husband willing to pay, but have no confidence on dealers (steelers). Contacted Ford for info on 'silent" recalls or relief on these systemic problems, Ford responded by giving me a "deal" on a new explorer ! I'm convinced that it's not only the assembly folks are on something but also top management!. FORD - fix or repair daily. 'nough said.

II had my Explorer into the dealer for an oil change last January and they mentioned that my right rear wheel seal was leaking and needed to be changed but not right away. I waited for the next oil change in April and scheduled it in for a wheel seal replacement -- $190. No mention of any problems with the rear end. Not 90 miles later I hear a loud crunching sound and managed to limp back to the dealer to find out that the same right rear hub they just replaced the seal on has a bad bearing/hub. They replaced the hub and bearing at a cost of $899 ($533 parts).

Given the Explorer's history of problems with the right rear wheel (Firestone blowouts) causing rollover accidents I think Ford would take this problem seriously. If having a tire fail can lead to rollover accidents imagine what happens when you lose the entire wheel!

I bought my 2002 Ford Explorer used on January 2, 2008 and within a month I began to hear a clunking/whining noise in the front end. I didn't think much of it at first but by the time I realizes there was a serious problem it was so noisy that it sounded like the whole front end was coming out of it and it was sitting on the side of the road waiting to be picked up by a tow truck. Got it to the shop to be fixed and found out it was the whole wheel bearing assembly. Paid the $413.00 to get it fixed and went on my way thinking this would be the only problem for a while since I bought it used. 3 weeks or so pass, and I started hearing that same noise and vibration coming from the Left rear side. My Dad checked it out and said it was yet again the wheel bearing assembly. Another $300.00 later and it was fixed again, but by this time I was ready to drive this piece of sh*t into a tree! So almost $800.00 later I'm thinking there's a serious issue, like maybe it had previously been in an accident. Kept driving the f*cking thing and here it is only another month later and had to take it off the road again to be fixed because now the Right Rear wheel bearing is gone. This really topped the f*cking cake so today alone I went to carfax.com to see the P.O.S.'s accident history and there is none. No rebuilt title, no major accidents, no flood damage, nothing od any significance that would affect the suspension. So then I got to thinking maybe there is a recall I don't know about-found none of those. But to my surprise what I did find was a website (this one to be exact) that listed very similar complaints to mine. This inspired me to call Ford Motor Company directly to file a complaint. I got in touch with a very nice man and told him my story and I asked him what needs to happen in order to file for a recall on this specific problem we are all having. He told me to get in touch with all of you having this problem and call the Customer Relationship Center directly and file a complaint with them. The # is 1-800-392-3673 and the man's name is Thomas. He told me there has to be a certain # of complaints filed directly through them before they can investigate this issue. So I STRONGLY URGE ALL OF YOU TO CALL HIM and tell him your story and if there is a recall there could be possible reimbursement in the future for all of us. I know this problem has cost me alot of money because I have only owned the car for 3 months and my repair bill will be over $1000.00 by the time I am done and many days of work missed. I believe this problem is all due to the craftsmanship of the car and I also believe that Ford Motor Company should be held responsible. I like many of you am a mother and I don't think Ford wants a lawsuit on their hands if my children were to be injured because of this. SO ANYONE READING THIS SHOULD DEFINITELY CALL THIS MAN SO WE CAN RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM.

I currently own a 2002 FORD EXPLORER XLT. Several months ago (SEPT 07), I starting hearing a whining or tinning sound coming from the rear. As the weeks/months went by, it starting getting louder and it started sounding like an airplane flying overhead. I took it into the repair shop, mechanic said it was the right rear wheel hub assembly. About $575 to repair. I had the repair done in December 07/January 08. I don't do any towing and the car is mainly used on the weekends. I have 62K Mi. on the car, barely even 10K a year. Now, here it is, 2 months later, and the same thing started all over again. Took it to the shop. NOW, it's the LEFT REAR HUB ASSEMBLY that went bad. ANOTHER $575 !! This is a SERIOUS PROBLEM. My mechanic said the WHEELS COULD COME OFF AND COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I HAVE A 7 YEAR OLD (JUST TURNED 7 TODAY), AND ONE ON THE WAY !! This car is our main means of transportation for trips and vacations and I cannot RISK the lives of my family or the lives of others, if this car FAILS on the HIGHWAY. THIS PROBLEM SHOULD BE LABELED AS A RECALL AND FORD SHOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. I filed a complaint with the http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm. I STRONGLY ADVISE EVERYONE TO DO THE SAME. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY RECALL ISSUE. I have read waaaaay to many complaints of the SAME NATURE and nearly at the IDENTICAL mileage mark. It's $575 to fix and NOW, I have to do the same thing to the LEFT REAR HUBS.

I had my front wheel bearing and my back wheel bearing go bad at the same time. This ended up being my birthday present from parents. Nice, huh? If only I had known that my car had a birthday surprise in store for me of the a/c quitting maybe I would have saved my present for that. WORST CAR EVER. And to make matters worse, NO ONE wants this car. Not even the dealerships. I have been offered between $5000-5500 as trade in value. Too bad I still owe over $8000. Never, never, never again. I only hope this forum will help others in the future to steer clear of this horrible piece of machinery. I bought this car used from a private seller and she informed that a month prior to me purchasing it she had the transmission completely rebuilt and gave me the receipt for over $800. Unfortunately, that should have been a tell tale sign right there.

I got a 2002 Ford Explorer 4x4 AWD and got it in March of 07. Well, the beginning of January I had to go pick up my paycheck on 37th N. and Rock Rd and on my way home (Hoover and MacArther) my car started wobbling really bad. So I had to get off K-96 and go all the way through Wichita going 30 mph which seemed like it took forever (knowing how fast I drive...lol...). Anyways, I barely made it home and then found out it was the passenger side back tire...(for those of you who know about cars, it was the knuckle, hub, and wheel bearings). I called around and they were about and was told it was 265.00 brand new for all the parts I needed so I went to Mel Hamilton Ford and ordered it cuz that was the cheapest I found. (It also took a while for me to order it cuz I had no money to fix it). It sat in my garage for 2 months before I got it fixed. Well, come to find out the 256.00 was JUST the knuckle (which has to be ordered from the dealership, the auto parts stores don't sell them and the salvage yards didn't have them all over Kansas, I know, cuz I called every salvage yard in Wichita, Wellington, Haysville, Wenfield and they checked in the computers. The part that came in was not the right part plus it wasnt all I needed that I was told, So the manager got the parts I needed at no additional cost. Thank God! Cuz I got the parts home and checked the prices and it came up to over $600.00 for the actual parts I needed! So I came out good on that.

Well, Monday (yesterday) I took Garrett to school and on my way home it starts to freakin wobble again.... (I knew that it was the front driver side but was not sure, but when Gary changed the brakes Saturday he couldn't find anything wrong with the driver side) Anyways, as I was saying, it was wobbling again. I had to go under 30 and he goes to school at South and so it was about 10 miles and took me again forever to get home. Anyways, when I got home I looked under the carriage and found out it was actually the front passenger side. Gary got the tire off and thank God.... we don't need another knuckle just the hub and wheel bearing assembly (in laymens terms, not that expensive). So we'll see how much I have to pay for the hub and wheel bearing assembly. Usually the front is more expensive than the back. Oh, I might need an ABS dilly cuz Gary smashed the wire, so I don't know how much more that will cost me. Dorky guy!

Anyways, that's all I got to bitch about on that, for now. If you got any hints or suggestions, let me know.... All suggestions except for trading it in (cuz we will end up doing that at a later time), or buy anything other than Ford (cuz that is what we are gonna NOT get next time), or go to a different dealership (which that's what I'm planning on doing...lol...). Before Gary and I got divorced in 2004 we went to this place and got a Bonneville and within a year the damn motor blew, and now this Explorer breaks down within a year.... jeesh!

I couldn't believe it when it was one thing after another on this car. Especially for only being 5 years old! Took the car in for one sound and got a call for the fix being 2400 dollars. I thought what the hell. Turned out all four wheel bearings and the four wheel drive module needed to be replaced. We didn't even have 85000 miles on the car. I had a 92 explorer and never even replaced the bearings. This is a piece and needs to be recalled. The mechanic at Ford even admitted that this was a problem with this year and model. It makes me so mad that Ford knows about this and does nothing. Now the transmission is slipping so I am sure that will go out soon. Obviously it will take gross negligence and a fatality before anything is done about this safety issue. Pathetic!!!!!!!

HEARD LOUD ROARING NOISE COMING FROM BACK REAR TIRES. HAD EXPLORER CHECKED TO FIND OUT THAT RIGHT REAR TIRE WAS ALMOST READY TO COME OFF EXPLORER. AFTER DOING SOME LOOKING AROUND ON THE WEB I FOUND OUT THAT MANY OTHER FORD EXPLORER OWNERS ARE ALSO HAVING THESE HUBS/BEARINGS WEARING OUT VERY EARLY (50-70K MILES). THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM AND FORD NEEDS TO RECALL THESE EXPLORERS BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. AS A LOYAL FORD CUSTOMER I AM REALLY PISSED THAT FORD ISN'T RECALLING THESE WEAK BAD BEARING/HUBS. I WAS TOLD EVERYONE SHOULD PUT IN A COMPLAINT TO THE http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ WEB SITE TO GET THEM TO RECALL THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM. I was surfing the web for 2002 Ford Explorer Wheel Bearings and immediately found this web page. To my surprise I see I am not the first nor will I be the last complaining about wheel bearing issues. I read all of the bearing complaints and mine is very similar to the one issued on 9/24/07 #28. My first failure happened in August 2007 with the vehicle under extended warranty. The left front and rear failed. This is my wife's car and, as always, we take excellent care of our vehicles. Now the repair was done at the Ford shop where we bought the vehicle. Today 12/13/2007 the Explorer is back in the shop for the right side bearing replacements and the vehicle is out out of warranty. I agree with the
complaints made about these wheel bearings. My concern is putting new OEM parts

Left front tire has been making noise. Seemed like tire out of balance. Kept getting worse over a few months until it sounds like a plane taking off and the steering wheel began to vibrate. Took to private mechanic this morning. Left front bearing/hub assembly is shot. 2 hours to disassemble so far. Part is about $300 from Ford dealer. Mechanic tells me the other wheel bearings are also loose. Right now he says we can limit repair to left front but must do the other three ASAP. We also need brake pads on front and estimate is $600-$700 for both but could be more. Mechanic says front is aluminum and bearings are cast...and that the bearings AND the brakes are not sufficient in design to handle the weight of the vehicle. We have never towed, we have done all recommended maintenance and we have driven lightly. We did NOT hit potholes etc. Our third party extended warranty MAY cover it...the dealership does not know. I am on the way to the NTSB site to file a complaint with them and reference links to every internet site with complaints about this problem. If only NTSB can issue a recall I think they should be pressured until they do! I think I'll buy a Toyota next. Never again another Ford.

While driving vehicle, on a daily basis, noise and vibration began to appear. As time progressed, it got worse, much worse. Took it to a trustworthy transmission shop and it was just as I suspected, bad wheel bearings. Now, $806 later I have it back. Just last year, it was the right rear wheel bearing and axle at a cost of $900. This thing is a money pit. Although my wife loves it, I would never buy another one. Probably never buy another Ford. They know they have wheel bearing problems with this vehicle and they just do not give a damn about taking care of it, Or their loyal customers for that matter. Maybe people need to complain to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration about it. It is a serious safety issue. Someone could get hurt or killed. I have a 2002 Ford Explorer. In Sept of 2007 I had to have the front left wheel bearing replaced. It cost me ~500 from a local tire service company. I did a bit of research on the web and was quite surprised with all the bearing problems I found for this vehicle. Well sure enough another wheel bearing failed this week (Dec 07), rear left, cost a bit more to fix ~565. Now I'm wondering whether I should just get rid of this vehicle, it has ~92K for mileage. I like to work on my own vehicles but from what I have read fixing these bearings is not that trivial. I have an 2005 Corolla with ~100k, no problems yet...

So, at around 90K all hell breaks loose in my rear end. Both springs fail, both sets of wheel bearings fail, full brake replacement also necessary. Around the same time I have to have the transmission completely rebuilt. Dollar figure was like a bad dream. I'm thinking it's worth it because all's well now - WRONG. Now it's 18 months later and my rear left bearings have FAILED AGAIN!! Thank you FORD. Parts are only warranteed for 12 months or 12,000 miles. I've put on about 24K in 18 months - so I'm out of luck. What kind of parts are they putting in these cars? I know Nasser was having quality problems back in 2000-2001 and they claimed they made some corrections and re-dedicated themselves to "QUALITY IS JOB ONE", but it doesn't seem to be playing out that way to me. Bearings aren't supposed to fail after only 18 months, but at FORD MOTOR COMPANY, that's now EXPECTED!! Service guy was apologetic and it seems there are LOTS of folks with my same complaint. I'm making this one a mission and I'll push as many buttons as I need to to get satisfaction. Friggin' transmission completely failed at under 90K. Ever heard of THAT being normal? that makes 1 new rear diff, 5 new bearings and hubs, 2 radiators, 1 set of emergency brake shoes, 1 heater/ac motor... all by 100,000 miles.... quality...

My suggestion before someone buys their next ford is to print out one of these
forums, bring it to the sales manager with your check book in hand and get a min 10 year bumper to bumper warranty with a loaner car option, or get up and take your money elsewhere. Lets see.....My rear windows do not like to go down in the heat, cigarette lighter in center console stopped working, Needed major air conditioning overhaul (compressor/evap core) at 60K, and now both rear wheel bearings. I guess i am the lucky one as my cost is only $535. yahoo!!!!!

Heard noise from the front. Dealer diagnosis: Both front hub bearings must be replaced. Plus: both rear wheel bearings must also be replaced. Cost: $1,700. All 4 in bad shape -- just after 5 years from purchase, and even after strictly following the scheduled maintenance with the same dealer. Additionally, the pinion bearing + diff also need to be replaced - cost $ 1,600.
Dealer could not help. Ford Customer service was a joke - two days after my query, they responded that since there is no recall, they cannot help in any way. Well, my next car that I bought last month is definitely not a Ford.

Car would develop a loud roaring noise once I hit 50 MPH, along with some vibrations. Took the car to a local repair shop and they found the right-front wheel bearing is faulty. In the shop right now, so I don't know how bad it really is (judging from the other posts, it may crumble before I get a chance to see it).

Yet another wheel bearing failure in 2002 Explorer. Just replaced both rear bearings for $1000 2 months ago. Now the front left is gone and im sure the front right will be next. This is pretty scary considering the mechanic said the wheels were about to fall off. My children and i could have been killed. Never mind the inconvenience, money, time, etc. Also have had a $2000 transmission job done. No I will never by another FORD AGAIN>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Another one of those common problems! My friends have trucks twice as old and have had a quarter of the problems. None of them have had any problems with wheel bearings. Really loud noise coming from the tires, everyone that gets in my truck asks what's wrong with it.It's humiliating, something always wrong.

Where to begin with this piece of sh*t. Oh I am sorry this FORD. Heard a funny noise, thought it was low tire pressure, filled the tires it didn't go away. Sound got worse and worst, so took it to a friend of ours who works out of him home on the side. Told us it was the wheel bearing. Left the car there for him to work on, called the next day and said that not only was it the left front, but also the right as well. I am alittle pissed now, seeing how we have already had to repair the panel on the back (where the FORD logo is), and a leaky transfer case. So we have already put close to a grand in the car. Now we were looking at $600 more, we just bought the turd on wheels 5 months ago.
I came on here and read all these complaints so I know now to expect the rear to need replaced soon.
I called FORD and lodged a complaint. Boy do they hire the best of the best sh*t heads in customer service. I said that I wanted to be reimbursed for this that I thought that this was a serious safty issue that needed to be dealt with, I got....well you are the first to complain. RIGHT!!! Then he asked where my car was told him ummm at a mechanic. He told he here are your options. Take your car to a Ford Dealership for them to replace the parts, and then we will see what we can do to get you some of your $ back. I tod him that one had already been replaced. He said have him put the old part back on and drive it to a dealership. YEAH I am going to risk the life of my 3 kids to do that you freakin moron. So I asked what my other options are and he said that was it. THATS IT??? I told him he needed to look up the word option, that if I have options then I get a choice of different methods of dealing with this. He said that he gave me options, risk my life with sh*t parts that Ford failed on or pay for it myself. HUH!
Well needless to say I didn't put the sh*t parts back on. But on the way home I started hearing the noise in the rear. F@@**$ FORD.
I would also be interested in a class action or SOMETHING to get Ford to admit they failed.

This is the car that my wife drives, and this job is not a little honey do task. This auto is serviced at the right intervals. Now when she looks at my 92 Chevy truck and it has never had a wheel problem, she ask me why the failure. The only answer I could tell her was that I am no secret agent, but it is probably cheap bearings, and made with the wrong metal. We do not drive this vehicle in water, that is where my truck comes in. We are Christian folks and will pray for justice. As my boss say( WE PAY YOU GOOD MONEY), well we pay good money for these autos too. I failed to mention that my 92 Chevy has 177,000+ miles on it. I should have got the message when they recalled the back glass. And now some of the Fords are being recalled for Cruise Control Fires. Anybody wants TOO GIVE me a Ford, SORRY, I DO NOT WANT IT.

I was driving and all of a sudden heard this unbearable grinding noise in the rear end. Took it to the mechanic the next day and was told my wheel bearing was bad, when he went ahead to fix it he told me it was so bad it crumbled in his hand. Two weeks later hear the noise again, again the bad bearings, this time he checks all of them and found 2 had to be replaced. One month later the transmission is screwed up.

There was a very loud sound coming from the front of the car. Both front wheel bearings were replaced. The cost of this repair was approximately $1,000.00 at a Ford dealer in March of 2007. Then, in August 2007, I had a very loud noise from the rear of the car. The left rear wheel bearing was replaced for $500.00. From my understanding, this is a very serious problem because the wheel can lock up. I asked Ford Motor company why this is was not reported to its customers. Here's the response I got... what a joke.

Dear Matt,

Our records indicate that you contacted the Ford Customer Relationship Center on August 16, 2007, and our Customer Care Representative advised you that your vehicle is not involved in any recalls or customer satisfaction programs at this time. Moreover, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which is the federal agency responsible for motor vehicle safety, and is the only organization with the authority to order a recall.

Due to our rigorous safety standards and constant testing, not all issues result in Field Service Actions or Customer Satisfaction Programs. If a program is announced on a specific component, Ford will notify you by mail.

My slight whining noise was with vehicle when I purchased car. Had 90,000 miles. It sounded like tire noise to me. The noise now has turned into a roar. Ford knows they have a problem with this but refuse to recall. If any attorney wants/files a class action lawsuit to hold ford accountable for their products I will sign up. This is definitely not a problem you want to have when you are driving on the interstate with two children in the car with you. All of sudden my truck just starts dragging, which will happen when your wheel comes completely off, down the interstate. Ford you should look into this before someone or somebody's get killed if they haven't already.

REAR END MAKING NOISE. TOOK TO MECHANIC AND WHEN CAR WAS PUT ON LIFT, BACK LEFT TIRE WAS MOVING ALL AROUND. TOLD IT WAS WHEEL BEARINGS-HAD TO ORDER-FIXED THE NEXT DAY. WHEN PICKED UP TOLD THAT WHEEL BEARINGS ARE A SEALED FACTORY PART WHICH DOES NOT USUALLY REQUIRE SERVICE OR REPLACEMENT. ALSO WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS THE 4TH ONE THEY HAD SEEN IN A 2002 EXPLORER,. Had to replace Front L and Rear R wheel bearings. Problem came quickly, once the problem appeared we brought it to the repair shop within 5 days and the repair man said we were very lucky because the problem was so severe we could have easily had an accident. We could not drive it until it was fixed. Have written Ford about reimbursement and we also have to replace one of the brake pads due to the problem.

Ford. Fix Or Repair Daily. What a piece of ****. I am done with buying American. I hate to say that because I have ALWAYS bought American vehicles. First problem - front passenger wheel bearing went out - had to buy the entire assembly. Second problem - passenger side rear axle bearing - replacing that today. Then, there is the loud ass whistling noise when travelling at 65+ on the Interstate on a windy day - what's that all about??? I don't even want to know what that is. Also - cracked front windshield. I have seen with my own eyes multiple 2002 explorers with the EXACT SAME CRACK IN THE WINDSHIELD. It's got to be a defect. Nothing hit mine and it was cracked one morning when I got in the truck -- I park inside. I have to tell you - Ford has lost a customer for life. One that would have been faithful til the end. Hmmm. FORD - Screw 'em.

I just had to replace three wheel bearings at the same time. One went bad while on vacation. Cost over $400 for one. The repair man said as bad as the bearing was it could have fell off going down the highway. Luckily we pulled over for a stop and then heard all the grinding. Both from bearing went bad too. Got that humming noise and knew I was in for a painful experience. I did the work myself and took me two days and about $350. Only got 67,000 miles of light driving. Now the transmission is going out. I service my vehicles religiously and don't tow anything! I wouldn't sell a Ford to Osama!
