Cracked rear trim panel on my wife's Explorer. Just like everyone else's. Vertical crack all the way down. It's a real shame, the car has only 42,000 miles and is in otherwise great shape. Ford dealer told me they would fix it for $400.
I've never considered buying anything but American in the past, but those days are over. For sure, next car will be a Toyota.

When I saw the crack, I went to my local Ford Dealer to see who I should contact about this problem. I've never had any problems with my Explorer; took excellent care of it; no dents, dings, accidents. The dealer told me I must have slammed the trunk too hard in cold weather. If that were the case, I should have cracks in all four doors (and the hood). They wanted to give me the name of a body shop to have it repaired. I said, NO, this should be Ford's responsibility. I contacted Ford's corporate office, they replied that there's no recall nor is it under warranty and that I would have to pay for the repair. I WILL NOT! THIS WAS NOT SOMETHING THAT I DID! THIS IS POOR WORKMANSHIP! I have had numerous Ford Taurus Station wagons before this Explorer, and have had no problems with them... this is Ford's mistake. I will not buy Ford again!

Extremely disappointing to se such a thing as a body panel crack for no apparent reason. It is no doubt poor quality from Fords side. We have taken very well care of our 2002 Explorer when it comes to body as well as scheduled maintenance (I have even refinished the fading door stile panels and flaking roof racks that I know a lot of owners are experiencing problems with). Looking at buying a new family vehicle very soon, Ford is going to loose out on another sale. I recently traded in my 2004 F-150 for a Toyota Tundra due to a failing transmission and differential at only 54K! No understanding or help from Ford on that one either. Again, all services were kept per Ford recommendations. Sorry Ford, but the list of problems is too long for me to even consider you again and who knows where else you're cutting corners? Not for my family - no thanks!

Without any neglect on my part, a crack appeared on the rear tailgate panel directly below the tailgate glass, next to the Ford emblem. I contacted the Ford dealer where I had just purchased the car only 2 months prior to see if Ford would stand behind their product. They told me this is not covered and that I would have to pay over $350 (back in 2004) to have it fixed. I refuse to pay for something that Ford should cover. I choose to drive my Ford with the crack so that "alike" owners will see the same problem and those considering a Ford will see it, too. I see many Fords with the same problem, so it is reasonable to say that there are many of us. I am furious at Ford for not replacing the panels. I would like to see the government hold Ford accountable. As long as they do nothing about this, I will not say anything favorable about my Ford SUV and I refuse to buy a Ford in the future.

Well a Google search brought me to this site.
I can't believe how many people have this issue.
I have had so many problems with this vehicle that I will never buy a Ford again!
Master Cylinder, Stereo (bad second time), Clicking noise in rear AC (fixed once under warranty and now it is bad again) driver door trim cracked and fell off door (have to replace entire door interior just to fix that issue.
I hardly drive my Ford, I only have 48,000 miles on it. And I take good care of it.
It is a shame that Ford does not care, and you know what? I don't care anymore for Ford.

This is the second time I will have to replace the rear panel on the back liftgate of my Explorer because it has cracked. I paid the dealership $200.00 19 months ago and they replaced it with another defective panel. It has cracked again. I have only put 12,000 miles on the vehicle since it was replaced and it is kept under covered parking. The dealership wants another $300.00 to replace it. I pitched a fit and they suggested I call Ford Customer Service. What a joke they are! Their canned response is that the part is only warranted for 12 months so they can't help me. I swear if we spend my tax dollars to bail out the automotive companies, I am going to refuse to pay income taxes! I'd rather go to jail then pay those crooks a red cent!

I think this sums it up that ford explorers are pieces of sh t , they were supposed to recall the rear on them and they didnt, im glad we had the extended3 year warranty, it probably had about $6000 done to it in that 3 yr time ,including rebuilt transmission, wheel seals , wheel bearing , i had to do 2 myself, chain tensioned for timing chain twice and its bad again, and now the hood paint is no good and all peeling, and amazingly the value of the vehicle isnt work sh*t. i cant get rid of it any how , and now i have the crack below the rear window. ford , your company will fail just like gm is currently.

I'm a used dealer and we have had probably 10 Explorers on our lot since I bought the place. 9 of them have had the large cracks. 1 of those caused the back window to shatter. It is definitely a Ford Issue. They have had issues with the adhesive they used on these and their Expeditions around 2002 and 2003. It is a defect and should be fixed for free by your Ford dealer.

From what I have seen on various web sites, there must be thousands of cars with this problem. One web site alone had over 400 complaints. I have also been watching for 2002 Explorers, which are easy to spot because the paint on the roof rack is peeling on most of them. There are a lot of cracked rear panels here in Wisconsin. I think, it's time that Ford steps up to the plate and admits that this is more than "an isolated problem".

Add me to the list!! This real panel crack is disgusting! My brother has a body shop, and says he sees these all the time- and that they will crack again because of the defect-
My husband thought i "did something" to make it crack, and I almost believed him (although I couldn't think of anything I did that would make it crack). Then a lady approached me in a parking lot and asked me if my Explorer was a 2002, and she said hers cracked, and that she has been noticing other ones cracked and always tries to talk to the owners to see if they have complained to Ford. She said she has been complaining for a year, but nothing happens in the way of recall. We bought this used from a dealer about a year ago, but it was fine at 56,000 mileage. Can't believe we didn't look it up before purchasing! Had no idea there had been so many problems with the Explorer. We also have continuing issues with cruise control not working all the time.
My husband is a die-hard Ford guy- maybe this will open his eyes...

It's irritating that I have the worst vehicle in the world. It really hurts resale!! I can't believe that Ford is OK with having this kind of reputation!! Thought I was getting a reliable well-built SUV for over $30000 new. And yes I was stupid enough to pay sticker price for the POS. I've tried to sell it for KBB value but nobody wants to buy a vehicle with the kind of reputation that the 2002 Exploder has. YES my rear panel did crack and the only reason I got it replaced was to resale the thing...AND here I am stuck with it 3 years later. I feel fortunate to have made it as long as I have on the transmission it has. The thing clunks between gears now and will only go back into park if I wiggle the shifter. It's only a matter of time and I'll be dishing out $$ for that issue. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE OR RECOMMEND A FORD TO ANYONE EVER AGAIN!
If you're considering purchasing an Explorer, consider this... Every issue in the complaint list on AutoBeef about 02 Explorers will happen to your Explorer... It's just a matter of when... And Ford isn't making an effort to rectify any of them.
Should have went with my instincts when I test drove it for the first time in 2002 - I should have purchased a Toyota 4-Runner instead. I will not make the mistake again.

This problem is possibly due to the original recall for the hinges. The tailgate closes but has regularly signaled a double beep as if there was a door ajar. I just barely noticed the crack and haven't tried to see if the dealer or Ford will repair it at their cost. This is the forth Ford product that I've bought new from my Ford dealer I hope they will make it good. If a new Ford Vehicle is their recommendation well can you say "Body by Fisher" as in Chevrolet. I saw a number for a Ford staffer named Lynn Buckman 313-845-6232, maybe I'll check with her to see if anything has changed Ford's position on this problem. Starting a class action lawsuit may not be a bad idea as someone suggested. I agree that their is enough evidence that would point to a defective part. What a bummer. My explorer looks new and with 46K miles is hardly used up and abused.

Explorer XLT 4.0L V6

This problem is possibly due to the original recall that epoxied the hinges. The tailgate did not have correct closure since that date slightly skewed. This led to the torsional loading of the tailgate which put mechanical stress on the part. After awhile the stresses built up until the plastic part failed. I first tried to get the local Ford dealership to fix this problem, they would not. I then voiced my complaint to Ford Customer Service through their website, they suggested that I look for a new Ford Vehicle and would not repair it either. I then sent a return email and copied several Corporate officials. I received a call from a Ford staffer named Lynn Buckman 313-845-6232. Call her daily she would appreciate hearing from other people who have this issue. She said they would look into it . They have since told me that there is nothing they will do for me. Not only does this make no sense as they are struggling to get customers they are running off those who have purchased their vehicles. I am interested in starting a class action lawsuit. I believe we could show enough evidence that would point to a defective part.

Well, it does and it doesn't make me feel any better to see so many other complaints about the exact same defect. I was at the carwash the other day when the dryer blew half of my rear panel off my glass lift gate. I, also had the rear glass replaced ONLY AFTER having the hydraulic arm pop off multiple times and having the entire rear windshield shatter on me when I tried to close it one night and the "fixed" hydraulic popped off again. After that happened I asked them if they were sure there wasn't a recall on the lift gate, and they replied "no". After getting a new rear window, about a year later I was closing the window when the entire thing came off the hinges and I was standing in the parking lot holding my rear glass window. The only thing connecting it to the car was the electrical wires going to the brake light. That's when the hinge recall came out and I got that fixed as well. Here it is a few short years later and now my rear appliqué has come off. I have not even called Ford yet, but the estimate at the dealership is over $700. After reading all of these complaints, I see that I'm going to have very little luck getting them to pay for any of it. WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT THIS????

My multiple problems: CD player, air flow of heater, 4x4 not engaging, air bag light, check engine light, transmission, sun visor, and of course the lovely crack below the back window that goes all the way from glass to bottom of that section of the car. I'm not fixing it, because as I have seen in too many reports that the problem reoccurs after having it fixed.

It is embarrassing because my truck look fairly new, and to see a crack in the hatch. At first I thought someone had broken into it, so I had a mechanic to take a look at it and say that is a default in the real panel. Just the other day I seen the exact same truck with the same problem I tried to get there attention but I was unsuccessful.

The panel below the rear window on my Explorer has a crack that starts right below the window and goes through and under the FORD decal. There is another one one each side that is smaller. It is about 1/8 inch wide and almost 12 inches long. It has progressively gotten longer since the weather has gotten cooler this winter. I noticed it after washing it just before winter set in. I have had the hatch recall fixed twice and I still have problems with it, this is really upsetting to see that everyone else is having this problem as well. This is my second Explorer and I said I would never own anything else, I am beginning to think I may need to rethink and go back to Chevy's.

I dont think I will ever buy a ford again. The check engine light came on for no reason the abs light came on, the air bag light is on not sure why no accidents in this vehicle and so many problems. The gas gauge chooses not to work in cold weather. And now it acts like the transmission is going out. To top it all off the heater started making a popping noise and went out yesterday. What else could possibly go wrong?

My Explorer had been sitting in the driveway - no one near it. Temperatures had been cold but nothing extreme - when I noticed that the back panel was cracked. This vehicle has been cared for like a family member - it has been my big, green baby. I'm on my second Ford Explorer - loved them until Ford refused to agree that this was a major recall problem with the Explorers. I barely had more than 50,000 miles on it when this happened. With this many complaints and for all the ones that I see in the parking lots that go unreported, it's definitely a problem Ford should admit is a defect. I don't like it when companies refuse to listen to their good customers, so guess who is not buying anymore Explorers!

Well with the cold weather came appearance of the second complete 5" crack across the panel on the rear lift gate. I was sitting in the truck waiting on it to warm up on vacation in Illinois and "pop" I i got out to make sure somebody hadn't thrown something at the car and that is how crack # 2 appeared. The temperature was cold, but come on... I sure am glad that I never paid to have the first crack fixed, because I would have been really upset if I had to pay to fix it again. Since the first crack appeared last year I have seen so many Explorers with this problem it just makes me sick to see it happening to everyone else too and Ford doing nothing.

Like a lot of others, the panel below the rear window cracked. It goes vertical about an inch, then horizontal for about 6 inches, then vertical about an inch again. Now having seen this website, it irritates me that Ford refuses to accept responsibility for their poor quality. I thought it was odd that the dealer had 3 of these in stock. Unfortunately, this was the first (and by far the least expensive) of my problems with this Ford. Also have transmission problems and problems with the hubs. Never buying a Ford again. It's too bad they don't stand behind their product, because I actually like the vehicle (minus the problems), but Ford REFUSES to admit to known problems with their vehicles.

I have been awaiting this problem to arise as I have read about it here often enough. One cold winter morning there it was a crack running the length of the rear plastic piece under the rear hatch. Took it in $400 and 2 days later and 2 days without my car. The way Ford has ignored the myriad of problems with this model is what irks me more than anything. because I do like my Explorer but more-so I despise bad customer care and for that I say Sayonara Ford I am going Japanese.

Second crack occurred about 4 months ago in the winter. Estimated cost to fix it about $350.00. This is the last Ford product I will buy. Thanks for the memories; Good Bye Ford...

Ford seems to fix thing half way while under warranty then is willing to fix it correctly when you have to pay.I also had a door open sensor go bad. Ford taped it worked for a couple of months then went off again and it trips your alarm. I finally replaced it myself. Now no problem.

Washed my car today and found this nasty crack from top to bottom under the rear glass about two inches from the emblem. Everybody says it's Fords Butt crack from behind. Don't know how to replace and they say Ford won't replaced it. Don't know what to do. I never did anything to crack it. It is winter time and I suppose the cold wet climate did it. Ford should do something about it like pay for the repairs. Some has said they have replaced two or three times. It is not cheap to replace, so I will call Ford tomorrow and bitch and see what happens.

I just found this crack today after having my car washed ... weather was extremely cold last week but I don't recall even opening the liftgate window. After doing a Google search and seeing all the others with the same issue I know it's a defect just like my 3rd gear transmission problem that I had to have fixed 18 months ago ... also well known and Ford sitting on it. I'll go to my dealer tomorrow but don't expect any will be done to correct it. I come from a Ford family and I've had 4 Fords out of 7 autos in my lifetime and I have to agree with all the other disillusioned owners ... I won't have another.

I discovered a vertical crack the entire length of the rear plastic panel directly below
the glass. Actually I thought my car had been hit or vandalized. After
making a police report and taking my car to a Ford dealership for an estimate,
I found out this has been a reoccurring problem with the Explorer's back panel. The Ford dealership indicated that it is believed that it has to do with the glass is
epoxied to the back panel. Over time, the expansion and contraction of cold and heat to the glass puts stress on the the panel and cracks it. Ford said they have seen more cracks on the right side of the panel. Ford indicated that replacement is covered if the owner has a current bumper-to-bumper warranty. This is obviously a defect and the owner should not have to pay a cent for replacement. The responsibility is Ford's. They know it is a defect, however unless it's a safety issue and someone dies, they'll sit on this regardless of the number of complaints that accumulate. In the meanwhile, I am replacing the defective/damage panel to avoid additional damages from rain and
snow. If I don't and something else is affected, Ford will tell me that it isn't their responsibility, as well! Once it's replaced, I am selling it and will not buy another
Ford. It's no wonder more and more Americans are buying Toyota and Honda.
This really ticks me off, since it will cost me the inconvenience of one day without a vehicle and approximately $450.00!

I bought this car used this past Thursday, January 24, 2008 and the next day I
noticed this crack on the panel underneath the rear hatch window. I took it back to
the dealer and he said he would try to get it fixed but not to expect it. I went on line
trying to find the part and ended up finding a website, www.autoforum.com where I
found there have been many complaints about this same problem. Some people
have had the panel replaced and the same thing happens. It is definitely a design
defect or better yet a material defect. It seems that extremely cold weather causes
the plastic to expand or contract which causes the crack. People have tried to get
Ford to fix their problem but most were not fixed by Ford. One person had his fixed
with the Ford Assistance Program, he paid $100 and Ford paid the rest. Another
person suggested removing the panel adding something to the back side of the
panel (epoxy?). For the moment I think I'm going to get some clear outside window
caulking to stop it up so water won't get in and make it worse until I can figure out
how I am going to handle the problem.

Same problem as everyone else. Thought you might be interested in Ford's response to this. Sounds like Alfred E. Newman with "What, me worry?"
And Ford wonders why people aren't buying their cars and SUV's anymore. Here is their response.
"Dear Jim,
We have reviewed your situation, and there are no warranties, recalls or customer satisfaction programs on your vehicle that would provide assistance for this repair.
On the other hand, your vehicle is involved in a customer satisfaction program. Please contact your Ford or Lincoln-Mercury dealership right away to schedule an appointment to complete the work.

Notice "Al" did not give his last name. Maybe it's Newman. If you want to tell "Al" what you think, you can email "Al" at crcfmc@ford.com. Strange it does not match any of "Al's" initials, even though he only gave me 1. Oh, I guess "crcfmc" stands for "Customer Response Center

I have had this car for 5 years! Couldn't believe it when I went to get groceries out of the back. There was a long crack on the right side of the car extending from the window all the way down the rear. At first I thought someone hit me, but there were no marks. I was so mad. We had a very cold week, so I thought maybe it was something to do with that. By luck, got on the internet to see if anyone had an idea about this. Could not believe the amount of complaints with people who had very similar stories. Talked to the local Ford dealership and she said that she had heard of some cases like this, but there was not a recall on it. What no recall! Look at all of these complaints. Ford should help pay for this. This is not a cheap fix. Close to $400. I am going to complain to Ford some more. This just doesn't seem right, if everyone is having this problem.

Yet another Ford Explorer with this issue. When will Ford wake up and realize that this is a design flaw? I have yet to go to my dealership, but based on comments here, it will be a waste of time unless I cough up several hundred $$'s. The time is now for a class action law suit to force Ford into doing what any good company would do under the circumstances. Is it any wonder that Ford is going down the toilet ??? I noticed the crack when I went outside to drive my other vehicle. Maybe it's the cold weather that caused it to crack...it's been -20F here in northern Wisconsin lately...but hey, we always get a stretch of extreme cold. The vehicle hasn't been driven in 3 days, nor have the doors or back window been opened, so it can't be anything to do with movement in this cold weather. It was just cracked. Frustrating.

I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT FORD HAS RECALLED AND FIX THE PROBLEM WITH THE LIFTGATE PLASTIC PANEL CRACKING. I CUT MY HAND ON IT IN THE DARK AND HAD TO TAPE IT UP SO MY CHILDREN WON'T GET HURT. I CALLED MY DEALER AND ALSO PUT IN A COMPLAINT TO FORD'S CUSTOMER SERVICE AFTER THEY BOTH SAID THEY WOULDN'T COVER IT. I TOLD THEM I HAVE BEEN BUYING FORDS FOR YEARS, AND THEY CAN TELL THAT I HAVE, BUT STILL THEY DON'T SEEM TO CARE. This happened the first time it got really cold last year. When it is hot outside, the plastic expands and you can hardly see it. I have researched, and there are no recalls, and I refuse to pay and have it fixed. Luckily, I have had no paint issues, just the crack.
I feel it is amazing how Ford can just ignore this problem and act as though it does not exist. I have had several conversations with strangers and their explorers with the exact same issue and they all feel the same as me. IRATE!!!

Just purchased the car a few months ago from a local dealer. Got up today did some running around and later that day went to open the back door and noticed a crack in the panel. The panel right above the glass window, the crack is a 1/8 of a inch all the way down. Come to find out that this is a ongoing problem that many owners are battling. This is not an inexpensive fix it cost hundreds of dollars to repair or replace. We just made are second payment on the car and have a five year loan. We don't know what to expect next that could go wrong. This should be a repair that should be paid for through the manufacturer of the car since this is nothing we've done, it's a defect.

Plastic panel below rear window cracked for no good reason. Night before no crack, next morning found crack of about 1/8" to 1/4" all the way through plastic from top to bottom near FORD logo. Yes, It was cold that night. If it's true that the glass is glued to the plastic, one would think the expanding and contracting due to weather changes is the cause. I have not taken it in to be fixed yet and probably will not fix it if I have to pay for it. I will just advertise on the back of my suv, like someone suggested: FORD'S FAMOUS BUTT CRACK!!

The rear panel plastic trim below the rear hatch window should be identified as a recall, if it not already. The panel easily cracks and a redesign of a better quality material is recommended.
