Son arrived in the driveway, motor knocking (usually so quiet you barely know the engine is turning). Dipstick says oil is low, due for change (religiously changed every 3000 miles). New oil, synthetic, filter : knocking is reduced, but doesn't stop entirely. Get an opinion from a few mechanics : try Bardall2 oil treatment. Okay. I tried. Knocking continues. Verdict : engine change required. Estimated cost : $3400 installed, including taxes (used engine availability not certain). I may get the ticking (rods) fixed. Maybe. I think it would be better to invest in another machine instead. The Intrepid is still very pretty, sitting in the driveway, all dressed up with nowhere to go but the junkyard. Oh well. Would have liked to see it last longer than 9 years.

This engine was service regularly, every 3500 miles, drive up to the gas pump
and the motor starts making noise, no warning lights on the dash, no nothing. I shut the engine off and that was it! (Timing chain) .

This 2.7 engine has to be the worst design I have ever seen and I believe
that Dodge should take the responsibly and recall all of these 2.7 engines
and replace them, it's a poor excuse to say, O it's outside the warranty period
sorry.

Loved the car. Roomy, smooth ride. Faithfully changed the oil every 3,000 miles. Developed some knocking - more frequent oil changes seemed to take care of it, although we noticed what appeared to be some sludge around the cap of the oil reservoir when it was checked between changes. On vacation, out of state. Horrible knocking comes from under the hood. Pull over at the first place available and turn off engine - never to be started again. Had to call a tow truck, to get it out of an hourly parking lot, lug a baby, suitcases and a car seat blocks to the nearest metra station, take a train to the airport, the only place apparently in Chicago that you can rent a car, and drive home. After paying for storage fees and diagnostic fees to a mechanic recommended we finally donated it for parts. Had never heard of anyone else with this problem until it happened to us. Like my father before me I had always been a loyal Dodge owner but never again. Maybe there are enough of us that went through this that a class action suit might be a worthwhile pursuit?

Fool me once shame on you fool me twice I'm a fool. I bought a 1999 intrepid in 2002 it had 62000 miles on it and it looked Great!!! Drove great and it seemed like a really safe car to tote my three kids around in. until first the drivers window motor went out....the transmission cable broke the steering column went out and then last but not least my engine blew. I paid $12000.00 for a car that listed at $18000.00 brand new and was supposed to last me at least the 48 months that I had financed it for. But after 14 months I had no running automobile and after I had already put $3000.00 in repairs into it. At that point I wasn't about to pay the $3500.00 that the mechanic wanted for a mew engine so I parked it out at my grandmothers farm kept making payments and insurance payments on it and PRAYED for a tree to fall on it everytime that it stormed!!!! I was told repeatedly from mechanics that Dodge had really screwed up with this engine. Then along came my daughters 16th birthday and my grandparents had a friend that had a 1999 dodge intrepid with 50,000 miles that had only been driven by a 78 year old woman back and forth from church and bing and an occasional trip to the store. $2250.00 was a great price for a car that looked and even smelled brand new. We thought that we could at least get her through the next two years of high school with this car. We bought it on July 18,2007. Have had the oil changed faithfully every 3000 miles. And GUESS WHAT!!!!!!!!!!! Today with little warning at all we had it looked at because it didn't want to start last night and we were told that the engine was shot!!!! SURPRISE SURPRISE!!!!!!!!! I cann't believe that nothing has been done to dodge about these problems with these cars. If anyone wants to get together and file a suit against dodge count me in. I own a 2004 dodge Durango and a 2005 dodge ram now and will honestly say that I will never buy another dodge product again. I even have very close friend that work at the dodge plant in Mo. (sorry Darrin hope you keep your job because your cars suck!).
I'd rather pay the $3500 for a new engine to a lawyer to go after dodge and make them take some responsibility for these cars.

THE ENGINE HAS BLOWN IN MY DODGE INTREPID RIGHT AT 130,000 MILES AND 5 YEARS OLD. I ALSO WANT TO STATES THAT BEFORE THIS HAPPENED MY DODGE INTREPID 1999 WAS MAKING A RATTLING NOISE AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY NEEDED TO CHANGE THE OIL. I STATES THAT READY HAD THE OIL CHANGE, THEN ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE THE AUTO WHEN IT JUST CUT OFF AND WOULD NOT START. THEN A MECHANIC , AFTER CHECKING THE DODGE INTREPID, TOLD ME THAT HER ENGINE WAS BLOWN.

AFTER HAVING THIS PROBLEM I DON'T THINK I AM GOING TO BUY A DODGE AGAIN. AND MAKE IT SO BAD MY FATHER WORKED FOR DAIMLER CHRYSLER CORPORATION FOR MORE THEN 33 YEARS. AND THIS IS WHAT WE GET FOR ALL THE PAIN AND HARD WORK. WOW !!

We have bought an Chrysler intrepid from a reputable dealer. One we have bought before. After having the car for three years and putting only 15000 klm on it -the engine had alot of repairs adding up to 1700.00$ The car was then serviced about a week ago. We had the oil changed and the air filter changed . Then last Thursday I drove it to work and back on a trip I have to make weekly. Then all of a sudden it the engine started to make this awful sound. Clunking and moving around like it was chocking for air. I pulled over and lucky for me no one was behind me. The mechanic has told us the engine is dead and we need a new one! After only putting on about 20 000 klm in four years!! We have a family and home to pay for. The whole idea that Chrysler knew what they were selling the general public! I want to know where we can join the class action lawsuit -to at least get our money back! We don't know if we can even find an engine to replace this one! Not only do we have major repair bills ths seriously interferes with my job! Am I going to get my lost wages back??? If you have any suggestions please let us know!
Seriously pissed at Chrysler! how can you sleep at night!

No recall from dodge knowing the engine was a common problem. First had all the lifters replaced , then 3 weeks latter engine blew on the way home which by the way I had to have it towed 120 miles. took over a year to finally get my car up and running. also now the window motors are starting to go out as of 11/03/07 2 so far both are in the front.

we were on our way to take my daughter home, whom lives 40 miles away. the whole family was in the car when all of a sudden the engine starts knocking very loudly. we decide that it is best to get off the interstate. about 5 miles off the exit we have to stop at a red light at a busy intersection and the motor dies. we manage to get it started agin to just go around the corner and get off the road. we have no phones, no way to call for help. the whole family is in the car, STRANDED!!! my gf walks to the nearest place and has to ask to use the phone to call for help. And mind you that this is on a sunday, not much help out there. she gets her parents to drive down to pick us up, which they had to drive at least 50 miles down to get us then drive about 30 miles for them to return home, which we live way out of their way. How EMBARRASSING!!! I am very big on dodge, but after this. i am still paying 400 to 500 dollars a month car payment while my car sits at the garage waiting for dodge to decide what they are going to do about it. Thanks alot!!!!my cousin is a huge dodge man, trucks anyway, and has his own repair shop, when talking to him i find out that i can't put a different motor in the car without changing the brain and computer and all. Not at all happy about this!!!

I do not understand if dodge knew of this problem the did not try to make it right. This intrepid was my wife's car which she is a full time student and has to have a car. I work full time. I guess dodge doesn't care if they screw people just trying to make it. I am never going to buy a dodge product again!!!!!!!!!! I am very disappointed in Chrysler, as they were aware the engine was defective and took no steps to correct.

It is unfortunate that the consumer can not count on US car manufacturers to stand behind their product from start to finish.

I am investigating my rights in this situation and will do anything possible to get this issue resolved. I have purchased Chrysler products in the past, plus I have family members who work at Chrysler.

As a tire supplier for Chrysler, I will be very happy to share my dissatisfaction with others.

I hope this can be resolved.

My sons car with 71000 miles was running fine when all of a sudden it started knocking loudly. It especially got loud afted he changed the oil and filter. He was afraid to drive it so I had it towed to a mechanic. After a day looking into the engine he determined it needed a new engine. After reviewing many articles about the problem with this engine I tried to contact Chrysler. Their only response was the it was out of warranty. I can't imagine any car company knowing that the engine had a design flaw would expect the consumer to just accept the additional $6,000 expense and possible return at a later date and buy another Dodge. This is outragous and something needs to be done

Intrepid SE 2.7L, Automatic transmission, 98,000 miles
Bought a beautiful 1999 Dodge Intrepid from a very reputable dealer. I immediately began having problems, like "sensors" needing to be replaced but I thought, eh, at $5,000 I stole this car. After only 2 months of driving the engine seized up while I was in traffic! I was almost rear ended by a car behind me as I crossed an intersection. I had driven this car only about 3000 miles when it locked up on me. During that time I had changed the oil once just like I was supposed to. I did not drive this car hard, I am a very safe driver. After having the car towed at my expense to a mechanic, After running a typical spark, fuel and compressopn test, I was told by the mechanic that he had to tear the engine completely down to find the problem. After two days the mechanic called and said that the engine was blown, a piston was seized and the excaust valves were burnt. So I paid $5000 to Ryan's engine exchange in Colorado Springs to get a remanufctured engine, all at my own expense. I bought the new engine in March of 2003, it is now September 2007 and my car just stopped running again! I took it to a mechanic and he says that the cylinder has lost compression and that it is leaking air from a leak test into the intake manifold. Bottom line, I need a new engine again! This on a engine that only has 54000 miles on it and which the oil has been changed and maintenance performed religiously by the dealer. I am a single mother of one with one on the way and have no car to drive to work and may lose my job!

I am a college student that commutes to school daily which racks up about 600 miles a week, so i wasnt able to drive my truck (which is a 1991 4 wheel drive, v8 Ram). So i found a car lot locally that had several used Dodge Intrepids and Concordes. Since i am a Doge man any ways, and these cars were priced well, with good gas mileage i purchased a 99 2.7 liter Intrepid for $3,500. 3 weeks later while driving i experienced a knocking in the engine and had to have it towed home. the engine is blown, and the crooked car lot refused to help in any way. I wish i had taken some sort of legal action or something but didnt. I now have a 3500 dollar lawn ornament. I have been told a used 3.2L can be converted into these cars for a decent price but I'm strapped as it is and am now back in college. I am a Die Hard Dodge Fanatic but this is B.S.

Bought a beautiful 1999 White Dodge Intrepid from a very reputable dealer. In fact, it had been his daughter's car for driving back and forth from the Ms. Coast to LSU, so Daddy had added lots of extras. I immediately began having problems, like "sensors" needing to be replaced but I thought, eh, at $4,000 I stole this car. Well, I drove it for 7 months, then came the knocking. I'd already invested about $800 extra dollars on sensors, here came the knocking. Took it to a friend and he said "it's about to sling a rod". He had to tear the engine completely down to find the problem. He said about $4600 to rebuild or try to buy one, but it would likely succumb to the same fate... Sad thing is, because of Hurricane Katrina, before the engine started knocking we had taken out a $5,000 loan from my workplace's credit union, so I have been paying a 2 1/2 year loan back on a car that's rotting in my front yard. 6 more months to go and I may be able to afford another used car from A DIFFERENT REPUTABLE DEALER!!! Ugh! I grew up in a Ford family and I'll NEVER buy another Dodge in my lifetime.

This car was supposed to be for my son. The dealership would not put his name on the loan so I signed for him. Within 6 months the engine blew. After being told that it probably would not be covered under the extended warranty if sludge was found in the engine I really started to worry. I had to come up with records proving that the car had been serviced regularly or it wouid not be taken care of under the warranty. I always service my own cars, I used to be a certified automotive tech, so they were being very vague on whether they would take my oil and filter purchases as proof. Finally I had to pay $1000.00 to have them begin work to just check the problem with the engine. After a week and the total teardown of the engine while someone took photos of the internal mechanics the dealership and Chrysler decided that there was no sludge in the engine. I got my money back minus the $150.00 deductible and a supposedly known good used 2.7L V6. Another few days and we had the car back. Here it is 2-1/2 years later and the 2nd engine blew on the 4th of July, 2007. I got about 5 miles from home, the check engine light came on, I turned around and the engine started knocking on the way back home. Not wanting to walk or spend the money on a tow, I limped the car back home where it still sits in my driveway. That is where it died and has not started since. I am going to push Chrysler into taking care of this. We still owe almost $6,000.00 on the car. It will cost at least $6,000.00 to have yet another engine put in this car. I have no way of coming up with the money to pay for another engine. I believe Chrysler needs to make this problem good. Not another 2.7L but an upgrade so as to not have this problem again. There is definately a design problem with this engine and Chrysler needs to take care of their customers. I have had many Chrysler products in the past. 1968 Dodge Coronet 500, 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner, 1970 Dodge Challenger, 1984 Dodge Daytona Turbo and now this pig. I was considering trading this Intrepid in on the new Dodge Challenger but if I get screwed on this car I will never buy another Chrysler product again. I will never recomend another Chrysler product to anyone either.

I had this problem in 2005 after putting about 30,000 miles on the car. For a few months it sat in the garage collecting dust as it would still run, though the engine would knock. My dad and I did some research and found the oil sludge problem and then also searched for others having this problem. We eventually got involved in a class action lawsuit against Daimler/Chrysler which ended in them paying off the remainder of the car. We eventually donated the car to charity but I would highly suggest going the same line as I did and joining a class action lawsuit.

I bought this car used with 97,000 miles on it. Until the present, I've sunk at least another 3 thousand or so dollars into maintaining it. Then while I was driving home from work on the highway one afternoon, the engine started knocking really loudly. I had to drive about 20 miles an hour ON THE HIGHWAY in the right lane with blinkers on. Needless to say that was a very dangerous position to be in as the law states you have to do a minimum of 45mph on the highway. Upon entering the town where I live, I slowed to stop for a red light and the engine shut down. Luckily I was in the turning lane, but I had to push the car across 3 lanes of oncoming traffic which was coming around a blind curve to get my car onto a side street. I was kind of afraid for my life there for a few moments. Dodge has put all of our lives at risk with these breakdowns and should be ashamed. They should replace these engines free of charge with ones that are designed to LAST, but that's like saying all politicians should be honest. I got AAA to tow my car to my house. I've had quotes of anywhere from 3,000 to 6,000 dollars to replace the engine. I'm ready to scrap the car and NEVER buy another Mopar product again. After all these years, you'd think they'd know how to build a car properly for the American public. No wonder the Japanese are leading the way in cars. I will now buy only Japanese cars, thanks to American auto makers. Dodge can go out of business as far as I'm concerned.

I bought the intrepid cuz of ride, looks and price. The car had 108,000 miles on it when the motor went. It took me 6 mos. and $5,100 later to put a new motor in it. Then, every time I turned around, it was dollaring me to death. My mechanic would cringe every time I walked in to tell him about the new problem. I will never, ever, ever buy a dodge again. I let a friend borrow it and the accelerator stuck and he hit a sign and totaled the car. That is the best thing even though I still owe and the insurance co. didn't give me enough money to cover it. I went out and bought a pontiac grand prix and bought the over extended warranty to go with it. I am glad the POS is out of my life!!!

Manufacturers should be responsible for the quality of their products. Not take unsuspecting consumers for granted who have nothing to go back on or no one to go back to. Everyone makes money off of the car deal at the cost of the consumer.

Being a single parent, my first attempt at purchasing a vechicle in order to provide for my child - make a living and pay the bills. Now because of this engine failure it looks like I'll have two car payments and one car! Or worse yet not able to afford both! And one wonders why our economy is in the state it is in!

It sickens me to think about the annual bonsuses upper level Chrysler executives receive all for putting out poor products or just plain greed!

Intrepid 2.7 L

  • 78,000 miles

I was first leasing my Intrepid then I purchased it and bought a warranty. I was driving home from a weekend at my brothers house a few sundays ago when on the freeway my car heaved and spurted then all of a sudden died. I had it towed to the nearest Dodge dealer and being a Sunday they were not open so I left the keys in a drop box with a description of what hapenned. Monday they called me telling me they will check it out. Tuesday they called me saying it was the cam and crank sensor, and I could pick it up on thursday. I picked it up and I was 23 miles away from the dealer and all of a sudden it died again. I had it towed back and the service man said the engine was seized. They told me I had to have all my service records. I could not find much but I know I had the oil changed regularly. They said they would have to have the warrantys inspector take a look at it, to see if it was covered. and if it wasnt I would be responsible for the 1500 dollar charge to tear down the engine they called me about a week and a half later saying that the inspector denied my claim saying it was caused by excessive sludge, it would cost 7000 dollars to repair. Needless to say I did not want to put that money into a car that is not even worth 7000 dollars, the dealer was more than willing to "help" me get into another car. I still owed 6500 dollars in the car and they traded the Intrepid in at 1000 dollars. The stereo I had installed was easily worth more than that. Last october the struts and all tires were changed as well as the battery and starter. Thank you POWER DODGE of Ontario.
Im sure they had to know of any problems, yet they released my car for it to only make it 23 miles down the road! Any Lawyers out there?????

This was the end result of my other complaints. The oil light flickering, losing oil, and now loss of the engine. I can't wait to dump this car. Hopefully, it will just sit on a dealer's lot and not get sold again. I would hate for someone else to buy this piece of crap car and endure all of this misfortune who could least afford it. I have already written to one of our local tv stations about the problems with this car. I hope they investigate. I won't hold my breath waiting for that though. The mechanic told me he put a "brand spanking new" engine in my car and when I looked on the bill it said "re-manufactured" I guess because I am a woman, he doesn't think I know the difference. I got the car back on Friday and it sounds like a piece of crap. I need to unload it before that "brand new engine" goes to hell in a hand basket. I'm sure it didn't sound like this new. Who would have bought it if it did? This car sounds like it is coming apart already. Hopefully it will last a couple of months longer and I can trade it in on something else.

I bought my 1999 Dodge Intrepid from a local auto dealership at the end of 1999. It has 23,000 miles on it at that time. Within a week of owning it, the catalytic converter went out and I had to have it towed to the dealership. They fixed it under warranty and all was well for a while. Then my driver side window would not roll up or down. My husband made an adjustment which fixed the motor but then the window went off track and I have to manually pull it up to shut it. Then my oil light started to flicker off and on for no apparent reason. I have always had my oil changed and check it regularly. It has never been low when the light comes on. Well, finally yesterday I went to lunch and everything seemed fine with the exception of the oil light came on again. When I pulled into the parking garage at work, I heard a very loud grinding noise coming from the engine. My check engine light never came on once. I shut the car off and it never restarted again. Apparently, the engine had a sudden engine failure and needs to be replaced to the tune of $6,000. What kind of company makes a car that doesn't last for more than 70,000 miles. This is ridiculous!!! Do not buy a Dodge Intrepid.

I have had this car just about completely replaced. Everything from the covering on the headlights to the seat belts, to the engine control module replaced. Each of the window motors have been replaced 3 times. Both cooling fans have been replaced and even the transmission control module has gone out. Some has been covered under warranty but not most. At 54k miles I had the lower half of the engine replaced with a cost of $3200 and lack of use of the car for a month. It happened again at 62k miles but they covered it this time. I still couldn't use the car for a month. At 72k miles I had the oil flushed and a tune up done. I did that again at 76k miles. I have also had the oil changed regularly but that does not help to prevent sludge buildup. Now the engine has failed again at 93k miles and once again Chrysler won't pay a dime! I am not going to wait for Chrysler to do what is right and replace the engine with one that works like it should. I am going to get an attorney and sue them! I want my day in court.

I bought a dodge intrepid because i liked the look and feel of the car . When I test drove it I noticed the oil light come on and the dealer told me it was just a sensor and the light would go off. Well it is now 1 yr later and the engine sludge has caused my engine to completely die. I have given it the regular oil changes used the right oil and look what happens these cars are junk and made of aluminum I might add. do NOT buy this car it is nothing but a headache and if the dealer i bought it from doesn't find me something else by the end of today i am going to park it in his lot and let the financers come and get the damn thing . I have two kids that i need to drive around and there is no way I will do it in the piece of crap ( to put it lightly ) sitting in my driveway that I still have 2 yrs to pay for.

But my car started it even worse. What really sucks is I had paid for a warranty through a dealership called Affordable Auto sales in warren. Well first I would like to say that I'm VERY disappointed in Dodge. I cant believe that they would make such a beautiful, and great driving car and then put a good for nothing engine in it and NOT do nothing about it. They need to RECALL the car and fix the problem. I got my car from my grandparents for a graduation gift (a 99 Dodge Intrepid) I fell in love with it the minute i saw it. when I got my car it only had 57,000 miles on it. but I just finally put 3,000 more miles on the car since I've had it and the engine started making a knocking sound and that was it my car was DEADER than a doornail. I had to call my family to come and get me cause I was stranded out on the highway. So after they came and got my we called and talked to some people about my car to see what had happened to it and then we began to realize that it wasnt just my car. It was all Intrepids with 2.7L engines. The other bad thing was that when we called the Chrysler dealer and asked them about it they wouldn't tell us anything. They acted as if they never heard of the car doing such things. Which was very rude and wrong they were lying. Then it came to finding out what it was going to COST me to fix my car. You know what they told me (that it wasnt worth fixing) unless i got a completely new motor. They said to get a new motor, it would cost me any where from $2,500 to $4,000 to get my car repaired not to mention the tow bill i had to pay ... all my car has been doing lately is spending my hard earned money. So I think that they had better do something about the cars a RECALL would be a good start. Cause if Chrysler is going to treat me like this then i'm never going to buy another Dodge/Chrysler vehicle again. Cause all they did was put me in debt for a car i had already paid for. I have put more money into that car than its worth ill never get my money back. I've also heard dealers wont even buy the cars no more, unless you sell them the car for nothing. So Chrysler is to blame I think! They definitely need to recall the car.....................

Purchased 99 intrepid from a used car lot who said this car was supplied to him from a local Dodge dealership and had been used by a businessman and well taken care of. The car looked good, rode good, and seemed priced right. We were replacing a car that had been totaled. Paid $3450 and was on our way. Nice car we expected to use for several years. 4 months and less than 4000 miles engine starts clicking, oil light staying on and check engine light on. Have mechanic check for repair he tells me this is a problem with the 2.7L engine and the best thing to do is get the $200 junk price and have it crushed. If I get it fixed it will go out again. Called junk yard for engine they said none available that engine had problems. Called used car lot he said I didn't change oil quick enough. Called Dodge no help. I think I had the $3500 stolen using the defective product. Still working on a settlement

Sorry Chrysler, you have lost another customer. I have had problems with all of mine, from the Grand Caravan's A/C, my Neon with the peeling paint, warped head gasket and failing rear main oil seal and the Intrepid's A/C and engine failure. I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE THAT HAVE HAD THE EXACT SAME SUDDEN ENGINE FAILURE THAT I HAD. MY DAUGHTER AND I WERE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD ABOUT 35MPH WHEN SUDDENLY THE OIL PRESSURE LIGHT CAME ON, FOLLOWED BY SUDDEN ENGINE SHUTDOWN. WE ALMOST GOT INTO A WRECK TRYING TO GET THE CAR STOPPED AND TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. WE WERE STRANDED IN THE COLD WEATHER UNTIL MY MOM COULD GET THERE TO PICK US UP. I AM A SINGLE MOTHER TRYING TO RAISE A 4YR OLD GIRL, ATTEND COLLEGE FULL TIME, AND WORK PART TIME. WHEN I HAD MY CAR TOWED TO THE SHOP, AND THEY TOLD ME THAT MY ENGINE WAS BLOWN, AND WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED... I BURST INTO TEARS. THERE IS NO WAY IN THE WORLD THAT I HAVE THE 4-8K THAT IT WILL COST TO FIX IT. I AM NOW STUCK WITHOUT A CAR AT ALL, AS I CAN NOT AFFORD TO GO AND GET ANOTHER ONE EITHER. WHEN I CAME HOME FROM THE SHOP I BEGAN RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM, AND BEGAN TO FIND ALL THESE SITES JUST LIKE THIS ONE, AND WAS EVEN MORE DEVASTATED. HOW IN THE WORLD COULD DAIMLER-CHRYSLER BE TOLD ABOUT THIS DEFECT SO MANY TIMES, AND STILL REFUSE TO ISSUE A RECALL. THAT ALONE MAKES ME SICK, THEY ARE SO MONEY HUNGRY THAT THEY DO NOT CARE WHO GETS INJURED, KILLED, OR IS INFLICTED WITH SERIOUS FINANCIAL AND EMOTIONAL HARDSHIPS. THAT IS THE MOST IMMORAL AND UNETHICAL THING THAT I HAVE EVER HEARD OF. PLUS HOW WOULD REALLY PUT ANOTHER MOTOR IN IT, JUST TO HAVE IT DO THE SAME THING FEW THOUSAND MILES DOWN THE ROAD. I AM TRULY IN SHOCK THAT SUCH A REPUTABLE CAR MANUFACTURER COULD BE SO SELFISH AND HEARTLESS. I WILL NEVER EVER BUY ANOTHER DODGE/CHRYSLER PRODUCT NOR WILL I LET ANYONE WHO WILL LISTEN TO ME. WE SHOULD BOYCOTT THEM, AND REFER EVERYONE WE KNOW TO THESE SITES SO THEY CAN KNOW THE FACTS BEFORE THEY PURCHASE THESE VEHICLES SINCE WE WERE NOT AS FORTUNATE TO HAVE THIS OPPORTUNITY. I HOPE THAT EVERYONE ON HERE FIGURES OUT SOMETHING.... MAYBE WE WILL GET A LAWSUIT AND GET REIMBURSED FOR HARDSHIPS AS WELL AS FOR THESE WORTHLESS JUNK ENGINES.. I TRULY HATE DODGE/CHRYSLER NOW!!!!!!!!!! IF WE GET A LAWSUIT PLEASE BE SURE TO LET ME KNOW.... I DEFINITELY WANT TO BE A PART OF THIS. THANKS AND TAKE CARE ALL MY FELLOW VICTIMS OF THIS INJUSTICE.

I was driving home from work when my engine just shut off. No overheating, plenty of oil, the engine just seized up. Took to a mechanic and was told that it needed a new engine, that the 2.7L Dodge engines were crap. I am only glad that I did not have my kids in the car. Driving home from work just happened that the car just stop for no reason, I check for a high temperature and everything was ok. I stepped out off the car, opened the hood and it was smelling like coolant & that it was running hot - When I stopped there was no puddle (I was expecting a water pump or hose had gone out). When I tried to re-start it the car sputtered and coughed and died.

Checked oil dipstick and it was cloudy and mucky - after a tow home and a mechanic checked it over it was confirmed that the block was cracked. DODGE HAS TO RECALL THESE ENGINES

Due to Chrysler making the engine with two 90 degree angles for the oil return it causes sludge to build up and the engine to fail, they noticed the issue and changed the engine in 2003, but didn't feel that it was worth their time to have a recall to correct the problem at hand saving us all the trouble of our engines quitting when on the road.

I just started hearing about other people with my same sludge problem. I used to work for a dodge dealer in NY & I had an Intrepid as a demo. I bought it out when I left to move to FL. Needless to say while working at the dealer my car had kit glove attention from my mates in the shop and when I left I also purchased the best factory warranty $$ could buy as I was leaving my shop mates behind. I changed my oil every 3,000 miles at a reputable Goodyear store. I left for Europe for a month and left my car in a lot at the marina to save airport parking $$. When i returned my car was fine and she started right up soon after i took it to Goodyear for yet another oil change and when i left there i heard a slight ticking, i thought they may have forgot something so i made a u turn & went right back. They double checked everything & all was ok except for the ticking so i drove @ 7 miles to my local dodge dealer after a week or 2 i got the call that my engine was destroyed due to sludge and it was my fault for neglect & Chrysler was declining my warrranty claim.. Well i made several calls to my mates in NY to no avail... since Chrysler warranty is a different division from sales & parts.. Well i still owed @ $6000.00 on my Intrepid so i went out & bought 2 new cars, called Chrysler financial & told them " to come pick up their car" i will deal with a voluntary repo not a LEMON... end of story. maybe someday there will be a class action suit Daimler/ Chrysler.... Intrepid 2.7L V6

  • 75,100 miles

Purchased bona fide 'previously owned' 1999 Dodge Intrepid with a 2.7l engine, with approximately 30K miles, December 2000. The only prior owner was a reputable car rental company.

Vehicle has been maintained in a manner that exceeds manufacturers recommendations.

On a day in early June, left for work as usual - noticed a slight ticking noise coming from under the front hood.

A major highway is one mile from my residence and, in the course of commuting to work, this highway must be accessed.

Within 1 mile of traveling on said highway, the ticking suddenly became louder and quicker - simultaneously, the check engine light came on - which by the way has only come on once during the past five years and proved to be an error.

Within one minute of the light coming on, it started blinking rapidly - along with a loud, warning chime - rapidly repetitive.

I was in the left lane of rush hour traffic - and barely had time to react to the sudden 'lunge-seize-lunge-seize............... of the vehicle.

Just trying to pull into an upcoming left turn access in the median, was like trying drive an old farm vehicle without power steering.

The vehicle then completely seized while maneuvering the left, and then just 'died' - fortunately [depending on ones pov] my mechanic was only two miles up the highway and came right away.

Apparently, the oil sludge problem caused the timing chain problem - causing the engine to seize.

My mechanic has strongly recommended that I do not replace the 2.7 - even if rebuilt/reconditioned as he fears the same "inherent" design flaw will cause the same problem, not to mention that due to the demand of rebuilt 2.7s [wonder why there is a high demand?-hmmmmmm] the price is reflective of that demand.

My mechanic has recommended converting to a 3.2l, but I no longer can find the site of the company [companies] that sell them.

For Chrysler/Dodge to lay claim that this is due to owners failing to properly maintain their vehicles, or to lay claim that an insignificant number of complaints have been filed, just flies in the face of logic, the evidence and statistics are there.

Hmmm, only 600 complaints? What is their magical number before admitting that their is a problem that they should be held accountable for?

Not only should this manufacturer be held legally responsible and accountable [hiding behind skewed complaint statistics] - this engine should be recalled - replaced at their expense and restitution made to owners for ALL expenses incurred as a result of lost of use of their vehicle.

Failure during vacation. While driving oil light came on, pulled to side of road and engine was 'ticking'. Towed (on Sunday) to dealer who later reported motor was totaled.

We were 3-400 miles from 1st destination, and unable to travel with 6 people in the remaining Toyota car. So wifes sister had to drive 6hrs up to get us, then back again. in addition to a total loss of the Dodge, we have had to purchase an additional car to finish the trip....

Motor has already been replaced once due to oil conditions with a take out motor that had a reported 40,000 miles on it. This would put the total mileage on the motor at around 65,000 when it failed.

Bought the 99 intrepid from dealer in 2000. Also purchased warranty to 75000 miles. At 70000 miles I noticed it start to smoke and need oil. The dealer was confused and told me to drive it till the part broke. He knew I was nearing 75000 miles. I told him to fix the f-n problem. I bought the car because it looked nice and was comfortable and ran. They cheaply fixed the car I would believe because the repair was only $1400. Upper engine repair is what it was called. Now at 140000 miles it needs it again. So what, every 75000 miles this damn car needs major overhaul. I know most foreign cars dont need this type of maintence. Also the car has pissed me off in other ways. Ex.-power window stopped working, transmission slips, axle makes clicking sound, and what the hell is that sound under the hood when you slow down to stop. I want $5000 dollars for having to deal with the crappy car and not being able to rely on it. Piece-o-shat.

This POS from Dodge was my 84 year old fathers car. He bought it used 3 years ago and was still making payments. It has started smoking when you take off from a stop. I saw all the oil sludge complaints, so I bought this 4 wheeled turd from Dad and sold him my 2003 Taurus (it's been trouble free) at a loss so he wouldn't end up stranded somewhere. My father is a WWII veteran and deserves better. To Dodge, you scumbags probably don't read these posts but you should. I've always told everyone I know to look at the front of any stalled, smoking and/or dead vehicles that they see because it will most likely have a pentastar on it. That's no &#!T, try it Chrysler! Are you A-holes going to F-up Daimler's name next? Chrysler is number three for a reason. To everbody else, don't buy thier junk, Ford and GM are pretty damn good these days, so you can still buy American with confidence, just not at a Chrysler dealer. I now have to absorb or recoup the cost of this dung heap. It is still running, I will probably sell it for whatever I can get. Unlike those Chrysler dirtbags, I have a conscience and will fully inform any prospective buyer of the risks. P. S. FU Dodge neckties! My father put his life on the line for this country, apparently, so dipsticks like you could rip him and others off. I hope you are all run over by a truck (Ford or Chevy) because one of YOUR cars dies unexpectedly in the middle of the freeway! Sincerely, Tim Coleman.

Yep, I too took mine to the dealer and asked about having to put in a quart of oil in between each oil change. This was after they had already completed a $2500 engine repair job that was covered under my purchased warranty (thank God I let my husband talk me into this $1200 warranty). The first break down they couldn't figure out what it was and it took them 6 weeks to get it fixed. I had something to do with the timing belt and they redid half the engine then. After asking them about the leak they said they couldn't find it and if it got worse come back and they would see if they could find it then. Well it never got worse, but the oil light kept coming on and I would check the oil and it would be fine. My last oil change before the engine went I asked them if they could see a leak and sure enough they found one on the sending unit. But before I could get it back to the dealer the engine started acting funny and on my way to work it starting making all kinds of loud strange noises and then died. After a big joke of getting it towed to the dealer and The dealer wouldn't look at the engine in depth untill we called told them to do it. They said it could be that it wouldn't be covered under warranty and they wanted us to guarentee to pay for it if it wasn't. Duh why do you take a car in if you don't want them to figure out what it was. Sure enough it was oil sludge and it messed up pistons, heads, rods and all that good stuff. But before the warranty would authorize fixing it I had to provide receipts for all my oil changes. Being a woman I kept changing where I got it done and had a family member change it several times. Needless to say after running all over and talking to the guys who changed my oil one comment kept coming up.."Yep this engine is doing this to a lot of people!". Well I have to say I am one of the lucky ones, the warranty paid for all but the oils and our deductable plus a couple of little things and our bill was $102.00 of the $4200 bill. If it hadn't we would have been paying for a car we couldn't drive. I figure I have been driving a used car for three years now that is worth $15,000 and the original price brand new would have only been $10,000. I love the car even with all this stuff, but hate to think what else will go wrong before we get it paid for. And my husband drives one as well but doesn't put as many miles on it, so are we looking forward to the same thing with his. I hope not. I think Dodge should have addressed this problem some how.

I just purchased this car 1 1/2 months ago, took it in for service/oil change, and everything was fine. As soon as I left the shop, the oil light popped on again so I called the shop and explained the situation. They took a look at it, and said it was probably a bad sensor. So it was driving smoothly for a month, and all of sudden hell happened. I was on the freeway, when I started hearing this ticking/clunking noise from the engine, so I pulled off and, of course, checked the oil. No problems there, so I drove another 15-20 miles till my exit, as soon as I got to the light, the engine stalled, so I put it in park and restarted, of course, with the noise still occuring. I parked in a parking lot, and had it towed to the house. Took it to the mechanic today, and was told the engine is gone, and had to be replaced. I was shocked, and do not have the $4-6K to replace engine, but the real kicker is when I researched this problem, and found out that it is the most common problem (read: disaster) with this engine. And am irate, livid, and devastated that Dodge has not recalled this engine. This vehicle was my only form of transportation save for the bus and my 2 feet. Dodge really sucks and encourage any owner of this vehicle to get rid of it, and encourage anyone who has had this problem to consider a class-action lawsuit. Dodge is horrible to know about this common problem and not recall the damn engine!

I bought the car in 2003, no warranty. I had it for 3 months when I kept having to get it fixed from oil sludge. Finally, I was driving home from work a couple of months later and the car starts skipping and then died. The motor locked up. So there I was 6 months into buying this used car for $10,000 and a motor costs $4500 needless to say the car is sitting still with a perfect paint job and a perfect interior. But its not worth a dime.

This is my second report. My first post was Oct 27 2004. My engine was finally covered under the extended warranty I purchased. Once they switched the engine, it died within 2 weeks. I went through the song and dance, and finally got them to get another one, because it was obvious the problem was with the engine, and I threatened a lawsuit.

Well, now the symptoms have returned. The oil light is on again, and I know what happens next. This engine was replaced, and now I am at the same place, only without coverage, and I still owe money on the piece of crap.

I know I won't be getting anything from Dodge. Getting screwed two times is enough for me . . . . . .

My 1999 intrepid had many of the common problems I have heard about. A transmission sensor went out causing the car to start in 2nd gear.( had that fixed by a friend for $175) My driver seat collapsed and the back went all the way back.( I propped up a computer monitor behind it to drive sitting upright) All of my interior lights went out.( who needs to see inside the car anyway) Then came the big one. My oil light would come on when I would idle. Only when I would Idle and not all the time. Then I heard a knocking. Then the car stopped completely. I had a mechanic from the dealer come to my house off duty to look at it. He told me that the 2.7 engine was poorly designed and that the oil should actually be changed every 2000 miles. I solved this problem by not making anymore payments. I'd rather have my credit be a little jacked up than make payments on a car I can't drive or patch a problem that can't be fixed. Oh yeah... recently my 1999 dodge stratus caught on fire while my brother was taking his driver's test.

My daughter was graduating from college a week before this last Christmas. A day before graduation on the way home ( a one hour drive) with the car loaded with her "stuff", the engine decided to make some noise then eventually froze up by the time she got it stopped and pulled off the side of the highway (in 20 degree weather). She called me at work and I had to leave to get her - 45 minutes away. We were in between counties which caused alot of problems with AAA responding, so we towed it home by ourselves to our local automotive garage that we deal with. He later told us that the engine was froze up and would need replaced but he doesn't do that but recommended another local garage. I checked with a couple garages which gave me $2800-3000 quotes for a used larger engine and they informed me that this was a major problem with this car's engine. The car was not under warranty, but I started digging into this problem through Chrysler's customer service unit and they told me that I needed to follow the claim procedure through the local dealership by starting with me paying for a diagnostic test. I did and the service manager even said that this engine has a history. He told me that a reconditioned engine would be $6000 with a 3/36mo. warranty or a used engine with no warranty would be $4700. Chrysler customer service said they would help with $1000 towards a reconditioned engine and that's it - their final offer. I am currently trying to work with the salesperson who sold us the car to see what they can do for us. My last possible means of assistance is going to be arbitration through Chrysler - STAY TUNED.

In 1.5 years with this vehicle, this is the 3rd problem with this car: #1 was the fan's switch transducer blew out 3 times; #2 was the transmissions shifter viewer (not under warranty or recall=$800+); and #3 is this engine problem. This obviously was the straw that broke the camel's back. I NOW CONSIDER THIS CAR A LEMON.

*WITHOUT A DOUBT THIS ENGINE NEEDS TO BE RECALLED OR A LAWSUIT IS IN ORDER! ARE YOU LISTENING CHRYSLER??? THERE'S DEFINITELY A LONG HISTORY HERE. HELP US NOW!

I'm not sure if the timing tensioner failed or if I had a sludge-borne engine failure. The tech at the Dodge dealer told us it would not be worth the amount of money it would cost to diagnose the problem and that we would need a new engine anyway.

So the 1999 Intrepid with that 2.7 L engine that we bought used from the Dodge dealer sits in the driveway for a year now while we continue to make our monthly payments and curse Chrysler on the way to the mailbox.

Our treatment on the phone to Chrysler was horrible. The Chrysler represenative was unfeeling and her patter sounded well rehearsed. Like she was reading her reply from a card. I am Mopar no more (and I was a big Mopar guy since childhood). They deserve a major class-action suit, but for some reason nobody is filing one.

I walked into a Honda dealer today to buy a new car (sorry Ford and GM, no more American cars for me due to my Chrysler experience) and when I mentioned that I had a 2.7 everybody seemed to know what I was going through. It was like EVERYONE knew of the problem with the 2.7.

What's up with that? Everyone looks like they know there is this problem, but nowbody really officially agnowledges it. It's like they're afraid.

I purchased my Intrpid new late in 1998. As a Realtor my car was my office so kept it in immaculate condition. One day while driving I noticed that my oil light was coming on at idle. I immediately check the oil and it was fine and well ahead of the next scheduled change. Just to double check I stopped at an Exxon station and they said it was fine. When I arrived back at my office and pulled into the parking garage I noticed a ticking noise. Called a tow truck and you know the rest. My 6th and last Dodge There may be hope though, the ABC affiliate in Chicago aired a sludge report on 9-16-04 and the ABC affiliate here in Austin also aired one on 11-9-04. Driving with pregnant wife and two young children on Garden State Parkway 3:00pm on a Saturday, heavy traffic but moving. Car engine failed without warning. No oil light turned on, engine seized. Chrysler customer service told me that it is my problem because it is past the 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. Other vehicle is Jeep and was considering buying Chrysler Town and Country. Some much for loyalty to customers. Chrysler not willing to help at all! Need new engine and or looking to rid myself of all Chrysler vehicles and start anew.

I AM MAD, MAD, MAD... November of 2004 I took my car in because the oil light stayed on and my car was using NO oil. The car dealer has always done all repairs and oil changes(I had extended warrenty also) Well it took them 3 tries to fix it and it finally was fixed (I thought). No more oil light on. It felt different and sounded different. The service guy tried to tell me that "when cars get age they are like old prople" "they start to moan and groan" GIVE ME A FRICKING BREAK!!!! In Januaray of 2005 we decided to move to NC and my last car payment was in February 2005. I bought my car from birth with 2 miles on it in 1999. had a few kinks to get out at 1st then it was a perfect car. Well 2 weeks before the move my car started to clack. ONLY 500 MILES SINCE CAR WAS REPAIRED FROM OIL LIGHT STAYING ON.. Never heard it before. I get the car home and NO OIL.. I called to make an appointment and they could not get it in for 4 weeks. I put oil in car and still clacked a little. So we moved to NC. Drove all the way from Florida and used no oil. Well it is November 2005 and my car has not used any oil at all and still has a slight clack. Only have added 2500 miles since the move in Feb. 2005 Guess what? Go to work the other day and car motor starts jumping all over the place and I pull off road and call tow truck. Call local car dealer and they can not accept the car at this time to work on it. So I have it towed home. Oil is fine... When I try to start my car it sounds as though the motor is trying to jump out of the body. We cancelled the extended warrenty when we decided to move for the warrenty that we had would not cover out of Flrida residence area. My brother lives in another county and he is a mechanic and says motor is gone. I have tried to call the manufactor and they put me on hold and never come back.. I THINK THER SHOULD BE A LAWSUIT FOR THESE $$$$$$ PEOPLE OR THEY SHOULD SEND US A CHECK FOR 5K FOR THE REPAIRS.

Bought the car in 2001 with 50,000 miles and bought and extended warranty. First thing that happened is the check engine light kept coming on. The dealer had this fixed once and said it is no big deal just let it stay on. Then the shifter would not shift in place. Dealer fixed that. Then the car would not go, thought it was the transmission but it was an electrical problem. We fought this over and over and had the car towed atleast 4 times within 2 years. We didn't have the money to purchase another car at the time. We had the motor flushed and after that it was down hill from there. The oil light came on constantly and when you put oil in the next day it would be gone. My father in put motor coat in the engine and it helped it tremendously. We were lucky to get as much use out of it that we did. I think that Dodge needs to recall the cars that have the 2.7 engine. Everyone knows they are crap - we will never buy another Chrylser/Dodge again. My husband bought his Dodge truck and we are selling it too. I will not support such a dishonest company.

Car was well maintined. We bought it used and it ran very well initially. Previous owner had no complaints. We still owed about 4000 on the car when it blew up. Decided to have the engine replaced. The mechanic who replaced the engine told us to sell the car as soon as possible. He said the engine design was terrible and the car was likely to be screwed up again soon. Actually, he called the engine a piece of *%#@. Well, we hung onto that car just a little too long because the timing chain went next (that's another complaint) and now it's sitting in my driveway, dead as a doornail, and I still owe about 3000 on the rebuilt engine. You live and learn. Don't, even if your dear old aunt wants to give it to you, ever own one.

When I first seen the new dodge intrepid I wanted one. If I had known about this problem I might not have believed it. Anyways, who would make such a great looking car with a piece sh*t engine, go figure. My intrepid blew up 1 month ago and I owe 6000 for the thing right now luckily I am making payments to a friend for a loan he had givin. Right now I am looking into a long block the cheapest so far to fix is 3000 and that is for the used engine. I should have it going again in month or so but all my extra money is gone. I think if you want loyal coustomers maybe you should have recalled the engine, maybe you just figured in the long run it would be cheaper to screw us over. I would have been better off getting a yugo the thing only had 90k miles on it.

Engine seized up while my son was on his way to school. After inspection by Chrysler (we purchased the car for their used car dept.) they determined that the engine seized because of oil sludge. Since we purchase the car as a used car we could not prove that the oil was changed every 3000 miles before we got it. From the first day we got the car, my son and I changed the oil and filter before every 3000 miles. We don't have the money to pay for the repair and we still owe $8000 for the car which has been sitting in the garage since it broke down and we are still making payments. The dealer we purchased the car from will not help us resolve this problem and will not accept it as a trade in since the engine does not work.
