My mechanic priced out the replacement part and informed me that the price from the dealership was about $600.00 (CAN) plus two hours labor, plus I would have to leave the car for at least two days.

I went and bought a Garmin GPS the next day for about $200.00 (CAN) and now I know how fast I am going for about 25% of the cost.

My problem started with the temp gauge. It showed that the car was running hot when it really was not. Spent $400 dollars replacing thermostat, sending unit, and the water pump. We finally came to the conclusion that the gauge was bad. Due to the cost, I decided to live with it. Now the speedometer is giving crazy readings. One of my co-workers has a Chevy Silverado with the same problem. Chevrolet repaired his truck at no charge. They want $500 to repair mine. Chevrolet sucks. I driven GM products for 25 years. I have bought my last one. I see a Toyota in my near future.

i have been going through the same things as most of these other posters. my speedometer is stuck pointing at the neutral indicator as of now . it started out giving my false readings for awhile and going back to working and now it is just stuck and hasn't moved in about a month. my blinkers wont work sometimes but i have figured out when they don't work i can hit the flashers and they will start working again. i figure i will not fix this problem until GM puts out a recall on it and for now i will just use a gps

my wife and i was on our way back home today after a short. i noticed my speedometer was reading 55 and it felt like we were barely moving. i pulled over to the side of the road and stopped, the speedometer read 15 miles an hour.. so we continued on our way home, and it is still stuck on 15. i will get checked out as soon as possible. the reason that i'm complaining is that i just learned of your web site by browsing on my pc for warranty's on 2004 impala's. i read a lot of the complaint's about people complaining about there impala's. i noticed that i have or have had the same problems that they have, or have had, i wish them the best these impala's are all LEMON'S will not buy another one!!! thinking of trying toyota!!! will go now. may GOD bless everyone that has problem's with these IMPALA'S. It is not just the fact Chevy has the defective parts or engineering. It is the fact that the rich bastards don't want you to fix it. Speedometer reads 120 when car is at rest. It first started reading incorrect and appeared to be sticking as it increased, then starting reading 105 when I was going about 65. Called Chevy dealer, said would probably be $400 to replace entire cluster over phone. $95 to diagnose. Will never buy Chevy again and will let others know of this experience. Before this started, turn signals stopped working for a day and then ac wouldn't come another day. Sounds like there is a recall type problem here that GM is not taking care of.

Initially the speedometer would read 90 when the car was stopped or wouldn't drop below 20. It was intermittent and then all at once it stopped. I had to pay to replace all of the gauges and it wasn't cheap. The car seems to have weird sorts of electrical problems like the headlights going completely out when I switch from brights to low beams. This car is almost paid off, but I don't think I would buy another Chevy vehicle.

Just as everyone else, the instrument panel went out one by one. 1st, the temperature gauge, 2nd, the speedometer, 3rd, the fuel gauge. It does exactly like all the other complaints. One day after work, the speedometer was reading 80 mph at a red light. Right now, it is in the shop and they are having a hard time determining the fix. So far, they have replaced the wrong part and said no charge to me because it did not fix anything. I will let them know about the instrument panel cluster that I read about on here. If they will listen to me. They have already had the car for 3 days. I am catching rides to work because they told me that it is not good to drive without the speedometer working. It drive fine until.....it started to whine so at that time I parked it for a month because i did not want to destroy anything if I could help it. On to the next complaint.

There is no recall on this problem and there should be. To all of you with erratic gauge problems on your 2003-2006 Chevy. GM had a problem with the stepper motor in the instrument cluster and my car was one of them. In my analysis of this problem I found that the problem lies with the plastic material that holds the permanent magnet for the rotor of the stepper motor. This plastic that hold the magnet also comprises the main gear for the gear assembly that rotates the needle. Well, this plastic breaks and because of the break it bends and jams the gear. Now it can't rotate to the proper pulses from the computer. This gear assembly is part of the stepper motor and is only two centimeters long. So the whole motor has to be replaced, it is soldered in the main circuit board for the instrument cluster. I was able to find a replacement motor on e-bay for $9.95 + shipping. I bought several and everything is not running fine.

The speedometer cluster and the temperature gauge is going crazy. Sometimes it shows going over 120 miles per hour when I am going 30miles /hour. The temperature gauge is recently going crazy too. I showed it to a GM dealership and they told me that I have to spend $700 to change the speedometer cluster.I had problem with this car when it was only 15000 miles with the brake. It was pulsating when I apply the brake. They told me that i have to change brake pads. I have 4 Chevy vehicles now. I recommend not to buy any more GM. It is little bit cheaper to buy. You will pay a lot of money after 20000 miles. Let this car company go out of business if they do not know how to make good cars. When I had problems with my 2004 Chevy Trailblazer very early, I wrote a letter to Rick Wagners office. None bothered to reply. Someone called and told me that it is my problem.

speedometer gone haywire

Complaint Photos

Well it's not the speedometer but I'm confident that's coming next. I just purchased a 2004 Impala yesterday from a local dealership. When I test drove the car I told the salesman the instrument clusters go bad on these cars. "Oh no not on this model year" he says. As I was driving the car home from the dealership the temperature gage went over the red area. I bought the car because I got a good deal and I like the features. I assumed I would need to spend $169 to fix the instrument panel myself. I have a call into the dealership hoping they will fix it because it was bad when I purchased it. But of course they will fix it with the crappy stepper motors that GM uses and it will need to fixed again down the line.

I, too, called the dealership where we bought the car. They stated there is no recall on this problem and that it would cost around $500 to replace the "cluster". This problem is not only affecting Impala's, it is affecting other 2004 GM vehicles. A family member purchased a used 2004 suburban last year and they had the same problem. Fortunately, it was noticed 2 days after they drove it off the lot and they were able to get the dealer to repair it. Here's a kicker! My husband is a sales manager for Schwans Sales. They purchase GMC Topkick trucks for their fleet. They have had several 2004 trucks needing the cluster to be replaced. Again the company had to soak the cost because the problem is not a recalled problem. This is crazy considering any employee who drives this size truck has a CDL license and is governed by the DOT's strict regulations. This is a safety concern at this point. We need to not only contact NTSB but also the better business bureau and our legislators. If the state of Iowa can fight against a corporation as big as Microsoft and win their dispute, then MANY of us can win this battle against GM!!!!!!

I have noticed many of you have had the same issue I'm having with the 2004 Impala Speedometer cluster. My initial reaction was not to worry about the problem but that will eventually lead to other issues. $550.00 is too much $$ to pay for a repair. This is not a part that can be abused by the car owner. It is a defective part and needs to be replaced by the manufacture.

First tachometer, then speedometer - I can live without tachometer and was for last year, but without speedometer working, it is bad and before I found a way around it, I had to use my GPS to show me what speed I am driving with.
Now, I wait till I get to the stop light and turn of the engine, turn key till all dashboard lights are on and turn it off, back on and off and speedometer slowly resets itself to 0.
I agree with others - it should be replaced by GM, since they decided to release the lemon on the market, I will not pay $500-600 for fixing it. I will fix it for half the price, but they better give me 36K warranty.
GM is definitely out of the list of any future card purchases, if the car can't drive 100K without issues, it is not worth any money.

I have been hearing about a lot of problems with the speedometer in the 2004 Chevy Impala models. I took advice from this site and filed a formal complaint with GM. They called me and required me to go to a Chevy Dealership Repair Shop for a $100 test to be done at my expense. And to everyone’s surprise the IPC (cluster) part number 10306205 was found bad. The estimated cost to repair is $484.00 (I looked up the part online and found it for less than $150.00). After reporting this to GM, they informed me that there is no recall for this part … I’m on my own. I informed them that I hope it doesn’t take a death to force a recall. Hope someone else has better luck then me.

Like many I am having problems with my tach and speedometer. The tach more than the speedometer. The tach likes to stick at about 2000 rpm then it just goes up from there. The only way I have found to bring it back down is to turn the car off then turn the key enough to turn the gauges on and then back to off. Sometimes you have to do it 10 or 20 times, but that is usually enough to take it back to 0 where it will just happen again. Sometimes that doesn't work though. If the tach actually sticks at a number the speedometer usually will be stuck too, but you have to wait for the car to cool down before either will go back to 0. I know I need to get this fixed, but I don't have the $400-$500 to fix it right now. I heard that the tahoes and silverados are having the same problem and they have extended the warranty to replace them ( the warranty was a 6 year 70,000 mile thing) I am not 100% sure this is true, but if it is I think it should be the same for the impalas. I am not sure where to turn to get more advice, so if anyone else knows anything more I would like to hear what you have to say. Thanks.

Have been having the same problems with my speedometer. Sent in a complaint to Chevy, called me back and said it wasn't on recall, but I should take it in to get fixed. I was not very happy, I don't have $500 to fix something that should be on recall. Obviously this is a problem on many impalas and should be on recall. Just curious how many complaints Chevy has to get before it goes on recall?

Ok so ya, everyone that I have talked to has had a problem with the all the gauges, the only one that actually works (for now) is the gas gauge. I'm tired of getting tickets because guess what - it's like over 500 to fix it and being a single mom not making very much as it is, I do not have that kind of money just laying around. When I turned 16 this is the car I wanted. Its black windows tinted looks like a cop car which is what I am going to school for. But I think it is time that they have a recall on it. Its not our fault it is malfunctioning!!! Mine was fine - I bought it in the summer, no problems with it what so ever - come winter, one by one my gauges went out. Its a great danger to other drivers!!!!!! chevy needs to get on it

like the others, my speedometer is sometimes too high (110mph to work while not passing one sole on a crowded highway) sometimes too low (less than zero). Can't afford $100 to fix the problem much less the 400-500 mentioned on this site. Would really appreciate GM stepping up and fixing the problem since this is evidently pretty prevalent. I have talked to many Impala owners with the same problem. STEP UP GM!

Just as all the others- 2004 Impala LS with a schizophrenic speedometer and tach. Read a suggestion to turn key to Accessory position, put trans in R, turn key on and off repeatedly. Speedometer back to normal for now. Called GM, as usual they won't do a recall until forced or until someone dies. They said there is no recall, I got the 12 year old that I talked to to admit that he personally has had many calls on this issue. All they would tell me was to take it to a GM dealership (and bend over). I've been a loyal GM buyer all my driving life- Olds, Pontiac, Chevy, they've progressively become just money-pit pieces of dung. Congratulations UAW, GM will soon be deceased. I'm done! There is just no reason left for me to buy GM or American anymore. They're all the same. Oh by the way, I had a 99 Olds Intrigue with the same speedometer/cluster problem that GM would never own up to either.

Driving home on expressway at night, speedometer indicator needle began to drop,
even tho I did not slow down. Needle bounced up and down but slowly dropped
beyond zero and remained there. Next day speedometer worked OK with in town
driving. Next time out on the road after 30 or so minutes of driving speedometer
began to sink again with same result as first time problem explained. A call to the
dealer mechanic resulted in "Bring in the car, you need cluster components
replaced, cost $505.00. If not repaired problem will worsen until all gauges stop
working". Repair not under warranty. This sucks out loud!!! Could it be the cable?
Or sensor in transmission? Dealer wasn't even willing to do anything but the
expensive repair. Now I find that MANY others are having the same problem.

My speedometer went nuts. While on the highway--speedometer stayed at 70mph and never decreased then i slowed down and it continued to go up when i accelerated--need le ended up straight down pointing at the park/drive icons. Big safety issue. Luckily for me my car was a gm certified used vehicle with a 36,000+3,000 warranty. Took car in they replaced the cluster . Took 5 days to order part. Have not tested speedometer on highway yet. I'm hoping they are not replacing the cluster with the same poor design as before. There has a been a recall on 2003 and 2004 Chevy speedometer clusters on the Silverado and avalanche. Hope they recall it for the impala with a real fix.

I have a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. I've been having problems with my speedometer. I took it to the dealership prior because for some reason the ignition switch would not start the car. That cost me about $800.00. The car now needs a new Cluster. And they charge $472.00 for that. I called GM itself and they were not helpful, when asked for the name of the GM chairman, I could not even get an answer. Is name so sacred. It sits in park with no keys in the ignition, it shows 80 MPH. While driving, it reaches up to 110 MPH, when you do 30 MPH. That is crazy, not to mention unsafe. There is no recall at all. I read that you could reset it, but I dont even think the dealer checked that. They come to me a say there is a problem with the cluster, I already know that, I brought it in to get fixed. The cost, and service is very lack luster. This will be the GM car I ever own.

this is the first GM vehicle I have owned where I have had to replace costly necessary interior components. Not happy with GM. I was always a GM fan, but not any more. Especially when you see that the Impala is about the best they can do now. I have heard 2008 is the year that will determine if GM survives long term. Unless GM makes some drastic changes to their foreign made, cheap quality, components, they will sink like a stone.
Vehicle styling, comfort etc., is very satisfactory. Its too bad they can't make a vehicle that would last without emptying your bank account. But maybe due to the agenda of the corporate financed New World Order, that is the plan.

The speedometer jumped around for several days and then just simply stopped working. From doing some research on the internet, it is evident that this is a very prevalent problem. Chevy issued a recall on trucks and SUVs for this same issue earlier this year, but has not done so for the Impala. IF YOU ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE PLEASE GO TO http://www.chevrolet.com/contactus/getinformation/ TO FILE A COMPLAINT. The more the complaints Chevy receives, the more likely it is it will extend the recalls to this model and reimburse us for our related expenses.

The first thing that went out on my car was the temperature gauge and I could reset it back to the original place by repeatedly turning my ignition back and forth until it got back in place. The next thing to go out was my speedometer. It was on 80mph and I knew I was going about 35-45 mph and then eventually it has went past the numbers and doesn't even move.I can still reset it to zero by turning the ignition back and forth but it's still messed up. Lastly, my gas gauge which about 3 weeks ago just went out and it automatically reset and now it's messed up again.

I previously posted this problem on this site before having it fixed (#15 at this time). After doing some research I found mrwhizard.com had the best price and offered lots of information about the problem. Following the instructions provided, I removed the instrument cluster and sent it to him (free shipping both ways). A couple of weeks later it was returned with five new motors in it. I reinstalled it and it has been working fine ever since. I have also submitted a complaint to NHSTA and would recommend anyone else having this problem do the same. Mrwhizard said that if there is a safety recall the costs to repair may be reimbursed. Even if not, this problem is serious enough that Chevrolet should be forced to do something, since they aren't doing it voluntarily.

I think General Motors need to do a recall and get this problem fixed. This is my first Imapala and is probably going to be my last. I can't believe they don't do a recall and take care of this problem, it certainly looks there have been a ton of complaints and problems with this. I have also had to replace a wheel bearing on one of my tires and have had more problems that with any other car I have ever owned. I had to go and get a new bulb for one of my blinkers, I understand they burn out but have not had to replace one on any other cars I have had.

Speedometer started giving erratic readings. I can do that myself, so I found a place on line that repairs instrument clusters. I will be sending it to them soon. They charge $169 with free shipping both ways. Just wanted to add mine to the rest I have read--tonite after returning home from major shopping trip--while passing a vehicle on the highway I noticed the speedometer needle stuck at 80 and then quit working altogether--just bought the car in June, 2007. No other problems so far--from what i have researched sounds like this could be quite costly to fix--I have no warranty on the car at this time, either--great time for this to happen right before x-mas and a major wedding in my family--so expenses are a little tight--will call local chevy dealer in the morning to see if I can get an estimate--also need to have fixed as soon as possible--it is dangerous to say the least to not know how fast you are going--especially since the impala rides so smooth and easy to speed with--I love the car otherwise, so far--maybe I should look into getting an extended warranty on this car---repairs seem to be very expensive!!! I owned a 1990 mercury topaz and drove for 12 years and never had a speedometer quit!!!

Just as the previous folks mentioned, except that I reported it while under warranty and the dealership couldn't reconstruct the problem. Now it is severe, and my warrant is out. I waited for 4 model years to get one so the bugs were out, well, 2005 seemed to be the year that all reviews I have read have had the problem to be non-existent.
I was taking my wife to a high risk pregnancy clinic 200 miles away and came upon a curve that I could handle at the 50mph recommended by a caution sign. After hitting the brakes hard due to no going the safe speed for the curve, I almost lost control. I then noticed I was actually going almost 70mph, after the gauge jerked upward, then begin to jitter in 1mph increments, until it reached estimated 160mph, actually sitting on the Neutral letter. This problem IS a saftey issue of the worse scenario for those who RELY on a critical part to be accurate. It isn't like a cable came loose, this stuff is electronic and could even be a fire hazard. A recall is indeed in order, because if something did happen, I would sue GM's ass off for faulty equipment. It is FAULTY equipment and NOT wear/tear, especially at 23,000 miles. this time, I was able to have pictures of the cluster taken while I drove.

Just like my rotors that seemed to develop warping and cracking every 1000 to 2000 miles, and I baby my car. Listen to a lecture how I am hard on my brakes from some dipshit manager, after a 1500 mile interstate roadtrip. After the 5th time, I didn't hesitate to take the parts back to GM service area and drop them off and tell them what a piece of sh*t the OEM is and show them the rotors pieces breaking off, then showing them the high end part. But, next time, I will pull in and show them, go out and buy from a different MFR and pull in the lot and let them see a live boycott.

I tried to call Chevrolet (1-800-222-1020) and of course there are no recalls and it's not under warranty. They have just suggested to take it to a certified GM technician and once a diagnosis is made (which you will probably have to pay for) you can TRY to send that to Chevrolet and they MAY see about helping with the cost. No promises, no solutions. I am definitely looking further into seeing what can be done... this is an extreme safety issue and quite expensive to fix. Also recently both of my cigerette liters have died (don't smoke but spent $300 for dvd players that my son can now NOT watch)! In the last week, when I pull out of my driveway just like normal, my traction active sensor comes on and the car makes strange sounds. This has rarely happened before and only if sliding on ice. Hello, it's summer, there's no ice and it hasn't rained in my city for almost 3 weeks now! I first had the problem at night only with speedometer and dimming the instrument lights fixed problem, then on hot days it would go crazy, and now the temperature gauge is misreading also. So I finally removed the instrument cluster to check for a loose connector, but everything was fine so I took the unit apart and found one of the central processing chip had silicone accidentally dripped on it at some point during assembly. So I peeled of the silicone of and the problem is back to being on hot days, I think if the silicone had been removed sooner before the chip was seriously damaged it would have been fine. The chip has a dark spot with white rings around it from high heat build up. If you just started having this problem do not put off removing that small blob of silicone. Great Car with great gas mileage and this has been the only problem.

Just a few weeks ago, around 58,000 miles, the water pump went out and had to be replaced. I say that as the possible reason that the water shorted out the speedometer and gas level indicator on the instrument panel. The problem is exactly as described by the others on this website. I have never had a car where the speedometer has gone out. I am not a young driver and have owned many cars in my life.

Based on the complaints on this site as being the same exact gripe I would say that this is a manufacturer's defect for certain.

I would start the car & it would read out 0. after driving for like 20 minutes it would jump up anywhere from 30 - 70 mph higher than what I was actually driving. Sometimes after turning off the car the speedometer would just sit at like 30,75, 90 mph with the car turned off. Every time it would happen I would just pull the fuse for the cluster assy & it would reset the speedometer. Then after it happened like 20+ times & getting really pissed off I finally took it to my local Gm dealer. The service advisor there said when the tech diagnosed it that it brought up multiple error codes. Luckily I bought an extended warranty & it only cost me my $100.00 deduct.

The speedometer is on the fritz, Like the same problem I read about somebody else's it starts out reading around 35mph when I know I'm going faster than that and then another time it reads 0 mph and gets stuck there. When the vehicle is turned off the needle is stuck on 75mph. The car is only 2 yrs. old with 46000 miles on it. Chevy warranty only covers 36,000 miles. Which I think is a bunch of sh*t for a brand new car. Now, we called to have it repaired and they won't cover this, other dealerships even on brand new cars have a higher mileage warranty rate. Now, to me this should be a safety recall because it is needed to be working correctly at time of inspection, it is a very expensive defect to be wrong with Chevy products and after reading that other people have the same exact complaint and nothing being done about them I think Chevy is going to ruin their reputation because I like other people are definitely going to be spreading the word on staying away from Chevy products. If anybody else had been in this situation and has better luck in resolving this issue please let me know.

I have a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. I've been having problems with my speedometer hanging. Most days it will be correct. Then again I'm not so sure. I've gone down the highway and it showed me going 0 mph, when I know that I was going at least 60 mph. Right now as it sits in park with no keys in the ignition, it shows 75 mph. I've called Chevrolet. They say there is no recall. I think that this is CRAP! I took my car to the dealership and they told me that there have been several people that have brought their car in with the same problem. It was the same make and model, just different year ranges. If anyone can help me with this, please! thanks so much for reading this and I hope that Chevrolet gets enough complaints to get a recall on this. Apparently they are either turning a blind eye to it or just don't give a damn! I do. I am a single parent with 2 children. I can't really afford to pay for mistakes that Chevrolet or GM companies made while manufaturing the vehicle that I have purchased from them.
